250 on Arenas scoring 20+
50 against Jamison's double-double
50 against Iverson's 15
100 on Mayo scoring in double-figures

Creating idea, but I think my way works better in that it requires less commitment.

Wizards edge Grizzlies in preseason opener
(PLAYED GAME)
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Image Watch Highlights

Gilbert Arenas's pregame kindness disappeared once the Washington Wizards actually started playing the Memphis Grizzlies. After a 20 seconds hug with close friend Allen Iverson, Arenas scored 21 points - 13 in the fourth quarter - to lead the Wizards to a 80-72 triumph over the Grizzlies at Siegel Center, in Richmond, Virginia. Before the game, Iverson clasped hands with Arenas, who was stretching on the ground. Just before tipoff, the duo hugged at midcourt, with the Wizard warmly putting his left hand on the back of The Answer's head.

Washington led by as many as 12 points early in the second quarter and saw Memphis pull within four points twice down the stretch. But the Grizzlies could get no closer. After Memphis guard O. J. Mayo split a pair of free throws to make it 76-72 with 42 seconds left, Wizards forward Caron Butler made a difficult turnaround jumper with 19 seconds to play that effectively ended it. Butler collected 17 points, 5 rebounds and two steals for the Wizards, in the preseason opener for both teams. "He had an incredible game," Arenas said of Butler. "Believe it or not, he can do this on a consistent basis and the challenge he gets is judging how to pick the defense we are going to have to penetrate."

Rudy Gay scored 23 points to pace Memphis, but injured his left ankle on a drive to the hoop with 1:16 left in the third quarter and played with a limp the rest of the game. Iverson added 14 points in 6-of-14 shooting. In an intense sequence late in the first half, rookie Hasheem Thabeet soared over Fabricio Oberto for a follow dunk, but the Wizards' newest signing countered by faking to the middle of the lane and spinning for a dunk at the other end. Pumped up, Oberto ran back on defense and gave Thabeet a little bump with his right arm, but the Grizzlies rookie responded with a hard, swinging forearm to the torso, and both players were given technicals. "He's such a quiet kid. That was the most emotion we've seen out of him," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "I think he was waiting for this moment to go in and compete against Fabricio." He later added that "The difference in the game for us was turnovers off of outlet passes. They probably converted on about four of those."

"We showed resilience,'' said Wizards new coach Flip Saunders. "The defense was good in the fourth quarter, and we played strong down the stretch.'' French assistant coach Thierry Tirieux had his first press conference and said that "We did a good job executing plays. We also did a good job at half-court offense, and in the last few minutes we knew what we had to do." Mike Miller and Andray Blatche were the only Wizards to score from the bench.

Wizards to battle Mavericks tonight
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Image Watch Highlights

The Verizon Center in downtown Washington, D.C. is already abuzz with exuberant chatter over the start of the ‘09-10 season. High expectations under the shadow of an 18-year championship drought have The District feeling that this year is as good as any to raise the banner. But Alexander Ovechkin will need help upfront if the Capitals expect to leapfrog Pittsburgh into this year’s Stanley Cup Finals. Should Sidney Crosby hold the fort, the gap between Ovechkin’s front teeth that is the pride of Washington will have to be filled by the Wizards, a franchise coming off a disconsolate last place finish in the Eastern Conference. To be fair, the Wizards were terrible. They finished with a woeful 19-63 record, victorious in exactly one game within their division -- a two-point win over the less woeful Charlotte Bobcats. Washington’s 13-28 record at home was dazzling compared to its foul 6-35 record outside the Verizon network.

A flurry of shrewd offseason moves orchestrated by general manager Ernie Grunfeld will catapult the Wizards comfortably over .500 and back into the Playoffs. Grunfeld pulled an unexciting, but savvy, move by trading the fifth overall pick in the 2009 Draft—one of the weaker drafts in recent memory—to Minnesota for Mike Miller and Randy Foye. With the sturdy Argentine Fabricio Oberto joining young risers JaVale McGee and Andrey Blatche in the frontcourt, the Wizards should have one of the most formidable and deep squads in the East. The Wizards answered concerns about their new team spirit Tuesday, traveling to Richmond, Virginia for a 80-72 win in their preseason opener over Memphis. Gilbert Arenas led the way with 21 points and Caron Butler added 17 and 5 rebounds as the Wizards held the Grizzlies to 46 percent shooting. Today, Foye (15 points against Memphis) and Oberto (only 2 points) will leave their starting lineup spots to Miller and Brandon Haywood, respectively, as assistant coach Thierry Tirieux practiced today.

The Mavericks' off-season activity bemused some people at times. They did the right thing by signing Marcin Gortat to a five-year $33 million offer sheet (No one seriously think the Magic would match that), but in the process let Brandon Bass walk out the door… to Orlando. The exciting news for Mavs fans was obviously the sign-and-trade that landed them Shawn Marion. Marion gives the Mavs a versatile forward to fit alongside the versatile Josh Howard, and of course Dirk Nowitzki. In the off-season Dallas also signed Drew Gooden and Tim Thomas. The Mavericks will be telling themselves their goal is an NBA Championship - even though most of the basketball world doesn’t give them a chance. The Mavs were brilliant over the final 10% of the season, but pretty woeful over the first 90%. Of course, if things don’t go according to plan, the Mavs might have a mid-season trade up their sleeves to catapult them amongst the title-favorites. It’s about getting a championship, now, before this Kidd-Dirk window closes.

With each passing year they become closer and closer to the day when they will have to completely reconstruct this team. The Mavericks have been a perennial contender for many years now and have not been able to accomplish the ultimate goal of bringing a championship to Dallas. The Mavericks have maybe two years to get the job done, the time is now. The quest started with the right foot on Monday, when the Mavericks defeated the Orlando Magic, 113-111. Marion found himself thinking too much and not trusting his instinct, but a halftime personal meeting with coach Rick Carlisle helped The Matrix end his mental anguish. He led the way with 30 points and 6 rebounds in 10-of-17 shooting. Jason Kidd couldn't wait for the season, posting a triple double of 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. The newest members of the Magic, Vince Carter and Brandon Bass, scored 26 and 22 points, respectively. Carter added 7 rebounds and 5 assists, while Bass shot 8-of-9 from the floor. Rashard Lewis had the winning shot on his hands but was blocked by Nowitzki, who had 11 points and 14 rebounds. Drew Gooden will start at power forward for Dallas, Nowitzki switching to center.

Butler pushes Wizards past Mavericks
(PLAYED GAME)
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Image Watch Highlights

The lead went back-and-forth for the first three quarters. When the Washington Wizards took the lead in the fourth, Caron Butler made sure they didn't give it back. Butler scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half to lead Washington to a 102-87 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night. He gave Washington control of the game for good early in the final quarter, singlehandedly outscoring the Mavs 9-1 over a 3-minute span. Butler's run gave Washington a 85-71 lead with about 6:15 remaining. "That start of the fourth quarter was big,'' Washington's Nick Young said. "He made some big plays and he brought a lot of energy, he brought a lot of toughness, which is exactly what you expect out of Caron on a nightly basis.''

Butler capped off his run with a tough offensive rebound, which teammates and coaches pointed to as emblematic of his play on the night. "It was hard-working, gut-check basketball,'' Wizards assistant coach Thierry Tirieux said. Butler and Gilbert Arenas's 19 points and 14 assists canceled out some big nights by Dallas: Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion had 18 points each. "We're a team that's known for probably putting our guard down a little bit early and letting teams get back into the game, but tonight shows our maturity,'' Butler said. "It shows how much we've grown as a basketball team.'' Washington may have let its guard down in the first half. The Wizards held a 8-point first quarter lead, but Dallas came close through the second quarter, going down 30-32 with an 8-2 run. "The game of basketball is about runs, and they made the run right off the bat,'' Marion said. "Then we made a run and we kind of came closer at that point, but then they came back in the third and put us on our heels.''

The Mavericks held the lead most of the third quarter, but the Wizards regained the upper hand on a big dunk by Mike Miller. Miller gave Washington its first second-half lead with an emphatic dunk over Erick Dampier with about 8 minutes left in the third quarter. Miller was called for a technical foul as he was celebrating the dunk and Dampier made the free throw, but the dunk gave the Wizards a boost. "Once Mike got that major dunk, I think the team fed off that energy,'' Arenas said. Washington closed the third quarter with a 11-1 run, giving it a 76-65 lead and a small cushion before Butler's run sealed the win.

"Just a sense of urgency,'' Jamison said. "In the first half it was kind of touch and go for a moment, but we did a great job in the second half.'' The urgency came in the paint: Washington ended up with 36 rebounds (only 1 offensive) to Dallas's 45 (17 offensive, a problem that coach Flip Saunders already acknowledged). The Wizards also held a big advantage at the free throw line. Washington made all of its free throws, finishing 10-of-10, while the Mavs were only 2-of-7 from the line. In other news, Dallas' Kris Humphries left the game with a left ankle sprain and limped down the tunnel to the locker room with 3:40 left. "It doesn't appear to be that bad,'' he later said.

Yeah it's good, but didn't get enough rebounds... may trade Haywood away along with Stevenson and some other for a good center.

Thierry's Blog: Flip's bringing new attitude and style to Wizards
    WashingtonWizards.com | October 10th, 2009

Welcome Wizards fans, to my blog here in Wizards.com. My name is Thierry Tirieux and manager Ernie Grunfeld signed me from Europe to be part of the assistant coaches team. So this very first all-by-myself post will just help you better get to know who the heck I am. I have lived in beautiful France all my life. I'm 23 years old, I love food (obviously), traveling, reading, being with my friends, and of course, basketball. I also have an unhealthy obsession with Hot Wheels cars, but don't tell anybody. I grew up in Paris, France and still go there a couple of times a year to visit my friends who still live there. When I’m not traveling for work and am home in France, I really just spend most of the time with my brother and his kids. Maybe this is information best kept to myself but the truth is, I am my best, my very happiest, when I’m with my family. And when I’m not with them I’d rather stay home and read a book. To be completely honest, I need to work on being a little better at socializing. But I think you didn't click on this link to know more about me, you want to know about the team, so...

Flip Saunders opened his first Washington Wizards training camp handing out iPods loaded with a huge playbook to me and the squad... I hope we don't lose 'em. Plus, blue T-shirts and baseball caps emblazoned with the slogan "Our Time." That's hardly a groundbreaking slogan, but it's easy to buy into, given the team's recent struggles. As if that wasn't enough for the Wizards to realize that change had come, they also experienced a Saunders practice: efficient and extremely organized from start to finish. Flip doesn't play around when he's explaining something. He expects you to pay attention. We took to the court at Virginia Commonwealth University on Tuesday to begin the process of renewal and recovery after last year's injury-ruined season. Agent Zero looked fine on his thrice-repaired left knee. I gotta say, I saw tons of videos about him in YouTube: he was like the typical Gil that we'd seen before the injury. So, good news for you, Wizards fans.

I can say Flip will bring "a new type of professionalism" to the Wizards. It's a type of professionalism that leaves room for entertainment: he brought in humor hypnotist John Ivan Palmer to work his behavioral control magic on the whole organization. Brendan (Haywood) was the life of the party, riding a broom as if it were a horse. Caron (Butler) found himself unable to unclench a fist, while DeShawn (Stevenson), who you may know for his "can't feel my face" gesture when he scores a basket, said he literally was unable to feel his face. It just opened everybody up. I felt everybody bonded with each other, instead of everybody coming here and sitting in their rooms with nobody talking to each other. We were all in a room laughing. It made us close.

Yeah that's my Hot Wheels shelf at my house.

My man Antawn (Jamison) later said in press conference that "We've been through so many down times, and so many negative things have been done or said, it's our time to put all that stuff behind and do what's expected and do what we believe can happen. If you don't believe it, we'll find a way to get you out of here." Around his neck, he wore his new Saunders-issued iPod. Yes, it does require a unique code to use, a bit of protection just in case it gets left in a hotel lobby. It includes videos and diagrams of plays, and it can be updated at any time. I was playing around with them on lunch time and they got the schedule for what we're going to do in March. From what time we're leaving the bus, shootaround, those are the things that to me make a difference. There's no excuse why you don't know the plays. You can listen to your music and look at the plays.

Gilbert arrived at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday for the first practice. Caron got there at 8 a.m., some 2 ½ hours early, saying it felt "like the first day of school." The team still has a lot to learn. That playbook is like one of those NFL play books, it goes on for days. But he incorporated things so quickly, and then you go right into it. It's no rest time. They don't play around. Some things don't change, however. For years, the Wizards have opened training camp promising they will finally start playing better defense. Sure enough, they broke one of their huddles with the chant: "1-2-3, defense!" Given the team's defense-challenged history, it wouldn't have been surprising if Flip had asked Palmer to put the guys in a spell while saying over and over: "You will play defense." It's not talking about it, we're just going to have to do it. Yes, we mean it this year.

Well, I hope you liked my first installment of my blog. Leave any comments or questions for Flip or any of the players. See you next time!

Yeah I don't know yet. Both played well when they had to start, but the truth is both are on the trading block.
