Passion Pit - Manners

Make Light - I thought this was going to be a psychedelic rock song, I was wrong. It's ghey. It's so ghey that if Freddie Mercury and George Michael made an intentional ghey song together, it would still be badass than this shite. I don't know and care if the vocalist is a guy or girl, it's still ghey.

Little Secrets - I imagine this would be the type of song that would be used by some groups/organizations to brainwash people.

Moth's Wings - tolerable. Maybe because the synth sounds aren't as intrusive or overused as in the first two songs.

The Reeling - Maybe it's the brainwashing of the second song but this one is also tolerable for me if all the vocals are removed.

To Kingdom Come - I hate it when songs have that 'nah-nah-nah' shite. Shows the lack of creativity to compose lyrics. The vocals are more noticeable than the synth in this song. Unfortunately the vocals suck ass.

Swimming in the Flood - tolerable again. I think the slower tempo compared to the previous songs suits the style of this band better.

Folds in Your Hands - if there is such a thing as death by synth, this song would be included as a possible cause.

Eyes as Candles - same as Swimming in the Flood. I find the band's song tolerable if the tempo is slow, plus the synth also aren't as intrusive. The vocals is what's keeping this song from being decent for my taste.

Sleepyhead - same remark as Folds in Your Hands except it's the absolutely horrendous vocals, even that sampled one. Currently, this song is the closest experience of having my head bored with a slow spinning rusty drill.

Let Your Love Grow Tall - it's the same run of the mill shite that I expect from them at this point in the album.

Seaweed Song - appropriate song to end the album, even though the song is shite because of the vocals. The song gives you that feeling that it's the end. It's like you finally see the light at the end of the shite tunnel you're crawling in (Shawshank Redemption).

I rate this album a near-retarded 7.5 out of 8-Hype, but since I'm lazy right now to make a half pic of 8-Hype and I'm not the type to give out partial values for ratings I've decided to round it up to a full 8 retardation because of the shite songs that I listened in this album.

Live - Throwing Copper

The Dam at Otter Creek - Boring start, but then it gets sligthly better, but not by much. The ending was very bad.
Selling the Drama - I really dislike this song, don't know why but, don't like it.
I Alone - Same thing with as Selling the Drama, wanted to skip the song right from the start, but overall not as bad as previous song.
Iris - Unlike most people here, I liked the stop parts, I think they were nice built.
Lightning Crashes - Didn't give me any feelings at all until the ending, which got better, rather pleasant ending.
Top - Wasn't very similar to the overall 'theme' of the album, thus I liked it.
All Over You - One of my favourite songs of the album.
Shit Towne - better than most of tracks on this album, but again nothing special.
T.B.D. - Rather boring song, but still not the worst track on this album.
Stage - meh, didn't like it.
Waitress - Not a good song, but not a very bad either.
Pillar of Davidson - Only made it to the 4 minute mark.
White, Discussion - Didn't manage to listen the entire song, dull.
Horse - Very different compared to the other songs of the album, but I did like it.

I have to admit that this is the first time I've heard, the first track what I listened was Iris. When I listened to Iris, I was surprised that this album was from the 90's, but after I listened to the rest of the tracks I wasn't surprised anymore. For the record I really dislike most of the 90's music, with some rare exceptions. This was not an exception, no doubt, it gave me a headache. I actually enjoyed Syncope Threshold much, much more.

Overall rating: 4/10

Highlights of the album: Iris, All Over You

PS.I Are we aloud to recommend non-english albums? I'm thinking of recommending one, if necessary I can translate the words.
PS.II Would anybody interested in similar thing, only with movies or tv shows?
PS.III Nice new format, I like it :P

Sure, why not. Once I start recommending hardcore stuff most people here will think it's in another language anyway.

I'd be interested, it'd be harder to maintain since you're looking at 2 hours of viewing vs 40 mins or so of listening but I'd join up.

Foreign language music is surprisingly listenable. One of my favorite albums is the Super Furry Animals' "Mwng" which is completely in Welsh.

Sweatshop Union-Natural Progression

The Answer
Slow intro, keep waiting for this song to get going. It sounds like enya and a bad dj are working together while dubbed under bad lines from old newscasts...I cant really rank an intro track: but from this I have no idea what is coming.
1/5

Radio Edit
Kids singing on rap songs always weirds me out but oddly it fits this song. But the beat and chorus is catchy Also like the bleeps in a song called radio edit (i know should've been obvious). This actually a pretty strong lead track. The verses sound good, the beat is catchy, it flows well with the beat. And best of all i dont hear an autotune.
4/5

News Flash
I know nothing about this group. I'm assuming this a joke track...but I hate the obvious need for a transition skit track.
1/5

I Got News
Digging the jazzy feel of this beat. The piano in the background fits well with the beat. The chorus seems a little...too soulful for the rest of the song. Not bad, just seems random. Still like the flow of the verses and am starting to get an idea what kind of album this is gonna be.
3/5

Don't Be Afraid
Nothing Special about this song really screams "talk about me." A decent beat thrown over the flow I now am expecting from the last couple tracks. Not unpleasant, just nothing special.
2.5/5

Better Days
The catchiest chorus I've heard on this album yet. Interesting attempt at biting lyrics and they have some valid points. For as pessimistic as the lyrics are, the chorus brings it right back up and basically says "Don't worry, shit will get better"...I actually am digging this song.
4/5

Today
Another attempt at biting lyrics. Not digging this one as much. Might just be too slow paced for me.
2/5

Us
More satire. This one is a little harsher. Less Mellow and feels more fitting with the lyrics. The beat and flow actually convey the anger unlike the last song. Huge improvement.
4/5

Truman Show
Hmm...I love this movie and i like the idea behind the premise of this song. I just dont like the flow of it very much. The lyrics are fine but the horns in the background feel too festive and upbeat for the message of this song. Not bad overall though. Distinct reggae feel to this song that feels different comparatively to the rest of the album
3/5

Baho Ang Titi Mo
Another transitional track with a beat and old broadcasting quotes put over beats. I really despise tracks like this. Just give me the frickin music.
1/5

On the Sly
Good idea to change the mood and get rid of the political undertones. Almost feels like an anthemic intro track. Not bad, just nothing to make me go wow...
3/5

P.O.T.B.
Mellow's everything back out. Found myself tuning it out though. Cant place why. Never good when you start to tune out a song.
2/5

Garbage Love Songs & Cheesy Jingles
Speedier than the majority of songs. Not bad. Sounds alot like some of the Outkast stuff from Love Below/Speakerboxx. Not bad, but nothing special again.
3/5

The Way
Wow...that chipmunk voice is painful. The speed in the beat and verse fits pretty well. Not bad. Just the guys hoping that people get what they want out of life. But god i wanna strangle that chipmunk
3/5

Stolen Memories
Hmm interesting retrospective song for the group. Just reflecting on their lives back in the day. Pretty good actually.
4/5

Any Reason
Not a Bad song at first. But nothing special in it really. Then the sound effect of a cheering/screaming crowd is more annoying than helpful. It sounds like a sound effect from background of an old school EA game
2/5

The Thing About It
The beat dropping made me think I had a bad version at first. But I like it. The chorus feels a little sloppy compared to the rest. Also the background instruments are overpowering their voices in the chorus. Good beat and lyrics..just the chorus feels weak.
3/5

The Question
2 minutes of outtro...Then at 4 minutes the real song starts. Screw the outtro...it was unnecessary. Once they start rapping its fine, but i hate that hidden track stuff. Just make it a track.
2/5

Overall: about a 2.6. The transition tracks and outtro really hurt it. Just give me the music and leave the crap out. And why do people think chipmunk voices sound good? A few more good songs than I expected and wasnt unpleasant to listen to. Just...alot of shortcoming on the non actual rapping parts (chorus/transition). The lyrics were all fine and flowed well with the beats...they just didnt always match up feel and content...But hey..what do i know?

Passion Pit - Manners

Postby Moz on Sun Sep 06, 2009 10:42 pm

OK, the singer sounds like Robert Plant and Bjork doing a duet. Make a Light got a catchy synthesizer riff. The guitar parts remind me of the Futureheads and U2’s The Edge. The verse’ vocal is the low point. Little Secrets is a typical electronic pop song consisted of guitar-proxy synthesizers, kids singing higher, and some 80’s New Wave beats. It’ll give you the anxiety that you’ll get Rick Rolled. Moth Wings sounds like U2 and The Reeling sounds like Erasure, only the opening part is exciting in it. Meanwhile, To Kingdome Come and Swimming in Flood got that late 80’s/early 90’s shoegazy music vibe in it. The latter have the better appeal on me, must be the trippy vocals. There’s some Daft Punk atmosphere on Folds In Your Hands. Eyes As Candies is the best song off the album for me. Sleepyhead, the chipmunked sampler is unnecessary since the singer got a high pitched voice already, definitely a filler. The only likeable part is that synth riff after the refrain. Another filler, this Let Your Love Grow Tall bit. I thought the closer is about Aquaman’s Rastafarian habits. It’s a bit of a let down since it sounds like it’s just a continuation of the earlier track.

Unless Jao gives a different link of the entire album, I'm skipping this one. Couldn't be bothered to search for individual songs in YouTube. I'm lazy right now.

Passion Pit - Manners

Postby benji on Tue Sep 08, 2009 12:07 pm

Passion Pit is a band with a bunch of unpronouncable last names. I like the beats well enough and the music as a whole is solid but I can't get entirely on board with the vocals. I got used to them eventually and at times he dropped the voice, so for example, I prefer the vocals on The Reeling vs the opening track. At times, I did think I'd prefer it a whole point more as an instrumental album. Although pretty much every song is too long and drag on when they should've finished which cuts down on the enjoyment of them after they're done. But I'll keep it.

Top Favorites: Little Secrets, The Reeling, Folds In Your Hands.

3/5 - Good.

Sweatshop Union - Natural Progression

I can't differentiate any of the songs or remember anything about them even clicking through them now. Boring rapping over worthless beats that go nowhere. But that's just part of the business.

1/5 - Bad.

Passion Pit's expired, five days left on Sweatshop Union and the current album is Sound Of Silver by LCD Soundsystem.

I'm taking myself out of the reviewing process on this, I won't be recommending either obviously but I'll keep running things... I'm thinking skipping/strikes are a bit redundant considering not many people are reviewing, so we may as well just keep going without it for now. If activity picks up I'll start keeping track of those things.

Re: NMC: THE BEST ALBUM EVER

Postby benji on Tue Sep 08, 2009 10:18 pm

Alright, here's the deal, we're rebooting this shit. People can't be bothered to listen to random shit that half of them hate for an hour tops over ten days.

So we're changing this shit up. It is now, THE BEST ALBUM EVER.

Same rules, same method, but now you give us what you think is the best album of all time. (We won't be sticklers, hunt you down and waterboard you until you admit it is, you can fudge and take a "best three" or "best to date" kind of thing. This doesn't mean your family is safe though.) The point is that we get the impression that a lot of people are picking the last album they heard, or the last good album they heard. And we want you to have some balls, to care, and pick the best album you've heard, or at least one of the best.

See that table Jae posted? If you are JaoSming, Lamrock or anyone below it, you can now change your album to "THE BEST ALBUM EVER." And anyone who reviews Brokencyde - I'm Not A Fan But the Kids Like It (and you have to prove you did so somehow) is good until my turn comes up. We reboot officially with Pdub.

POSTER RECOMMENDATION DATE REVIEW DEADLINEALBUM
JaoSming Wednesday 2nd September Saturday 12th September

Just in case anyone thinks Ben has had too much to drink and is trying to enforce some sort of hostile takeover of the group, we were discussing it earlier and he came up with the idea of changing it up this way, which I thought was great. My lack of energy/motivation to run things was a stumbling block so he volunteered to take over. I'll be participating because I think this will be fun, so if you've got any questions/concerns feel free to ask either of us... but preferably Ben.

I AM rebooting the due dates. Here's the deal, from here on out post that you're committed and if you want to, your best album ever, and I'll reboot the dates based on the "two weekends per album" guideline when we top five people.

And the new order will be based on your response to stay in, how you participated previously, and the current order. In that order.

Sweatshop Union - Natural Progression

The Answer - Listened to it with quite low volume, so didn't hear all the lyrics, just the introduction to the album I guess.
Radio Edit - The real start of the album, the rapping style reminds me Eminem a little, except chorus part. Catchy song, probably will listen to it more later.
News Flash - Ummm... great song
I Got News - Has some 50s-60s feel in it. I dig how they do different type of tracks.
Don't Be Afraid - meh, nothing special.
Better Days - Great lyrics, good song.
Today - Chorus was catchy, but didn't like the end.
US - Again good lyrics, little too agressive in my opinion
Truman Show - strange lyrics, but I like the flow of the song.
Baho Ang Titi Mo - read News Flash, only with better background music
On the Sly - A filler for the album.
P.O.T.B - nothing special neutral to this.
Garbage Love Songs & Cheesy Jingl - Great start to the song, holds up for the rest of the song, one of the best songs of the album.
The Way - Another filler, nothing special.
Stolen Memories - This album has got some great lyrics, but this song has the best (so far).
Any Reason - Didn't like the start of this song, one of the worst songs in this album.
The Thing About It - The background music is nice(the guitar or whatever it is).
The Question - Outtro, does it's job, but has some weird silences in it, but when it gets going it's just as good as the rest of the album.

I had never heard of this group, but unlike Live I liked it. The lyrics fit to my taste, although little too agressive to my taste. The beats aren't anything special, but they do their job. Both album's that JaoSming recommended are somewhat similar, their not very deep, but I can say that I enjoyed both of them. The first half of the album was better than the second half, somewhere in the middle it got a little shaky, but in the end it picked it up again. In my opinion there were few too many songs, about 13-15 would've been enough.

Highlights of the album: Stolen Memories, I Got News, Radio Edit, Garbage Love Songs & Cheesy Jingl

Overall rating: 7/10

PS. Is it necessary that I should change the album I recommended to my favourite album of all time?
