Nba2k10 Draft Combine

Mon Aug 24, 2009 3:37 pm

I love the idea of the draft combine. Has a little rpg-ish feel to it but I have not seen any indication this is being released on the PC. Most likely since its just a mini-game it'll be costly for them to put out a physical version of it and that's why its on xbox live and ps3 network. But pc has been distributing games electronically far before console has so I really wish 2ksports would release the draft combine for pc. I don't want to go through my player mode in 2k10 as an 'undrafted player'. In the draft combine you eventually get drafted based on how well you did and how many points you rack up. You can then bring that player through to 2k10 my player mode.
Does anyone know if 2ksports has any plans to release the draft combine on pc?

But in the My Player mode on pc, isn't the draft combine included?
i mean, how does it work then: you create a player and then whoopsiedaisy, he's in a nba team and that's it?

No as far as I know in the pc one you have a player who is 'undrafted' (which is different from the draft combine where your draft prospects depends on your performance). The pc version also mentions that you could land in the d-league as well. The mycarrer mode isn't reliant on the draft combine at all. It isn't necessary for the full game and it can't be because not everyone who plans to buy 2k10 on console will get draft combine. However I really want to play the draft combine if only to pass time until 2k10 gets released. I think the draft combine costs $4.99 approx on xbox live. I wouldn't mind paying that if it was released on steam or whatever.
I'll email 2ksports or start a thread in their forums to ask if they plan to release draft combine on pc or have it included in the full version
"i mean, how does it work then: you create a player and then whoopsiedaisy, he's in a nba team and that's it?" Yeah. That's mostly how its always worked for sport games. You create a player and choose a team and try improve his stats and that is how the my career mode in nba2k10 will work is as well (but not always necessarily a nba team...sometimes you can land in the d-league if you didn't perform well at your trials) if you don't have a player to import (from draft combine). That is essentially the difference with getting the draft combine and not. You either start as a draft pick and be a gun like derrick rose or you start undrafted and as a free agent and you go on to prove your worth

Sweet. Thanks. I do wish nba live was on pc again though. Just the more options the better and I kinda like the cartoony graphics on nba live 09. Makes Dwight Howard look like an absolute beast. One thing I want most from nba2k10 is that the game is very playable out the box and I don't have to spend ages twinkering with the sliders.

Also from what I've seen we can choose a variety of sig shots for a player (diff shots in different positions) rather then just 1. I think the options are normal, drift right, drift left, fade-away, etc...which I think is just sick. I remember in nba2k9 EVERYONE's drift right and drift left were exactly the same which was stupid because you get these big forwards doing the same drift jumping fade-aways as guards. Can't wait

ps. I hope the post game is improved. Post games always gets stale after a while because of the lack of moves and there wasn't much dynamism and variation. I hope post moves are more dynamic and sleek but harder to score coz of good post defence like in real life.

edit: -This is the only Live/2K comparison I'll make, and I only do it because Dwight is the cover athlete of Live. The Dwight in 2K10 looks better than the Dwight I've seen in Live 10.
I sure hope so. I hated his model in nba2k9

well, as good as playing with a 37 overall player can be

I am considering dropping the 5 bucks on it to develop some players even though I dont plan on getting the 360 version of 2k10.

Ima download it when its available for ps3. From what I read on OS it seems to be pretty enjoyable. I hate getting hyped 40 days before the game comes out so I guess I need to spend the 5 bucks to get a bit 2k stuff to play.

The My Player mode is still in 2K10, you don't have to have the draft combine.

I got the Draft Combine earlier and played for a few hours. No sliders or anything, game speed is pretty damn slow for my taste, so I often find myself yelling "come the fuck on!" at my tv when I am pressing a button and the game doesn't agree with what I thought was going to happen when I press it. It's got a small learning curve.

Much of the control scheme has changed, but you can still perform the same moves using a different combination. For instance, the LT is now the Clutch button and is used to perform a few isomotion moves that used to be on the RT. It replaces the backdown function which is now automatically initiated and is damn ready to piss me off when I don't want it initiated because I feel locked in the "intializing post-animation" animation for about a second. You can call for an alleyoop, set a pick, adjust your pick position and get called for a moving screen, flop, spin off the post for a lob, push off a defender to get open, you can hold the offensive player and on defense you can swipe there hands away. All of these are things that can be done by button presses or analog stick movements.

Calling for a pass in certain(possibly exploit) situations results in no pass being thrown and a lowered team grade. I went from an A- to a B by pressing pass 3 times while I was wide open in the last seconds of a game. Button mashing will lower your score. Going for two many steals on passes, fouling, leaving you assignment, etc. Also, they seem to have queued button presses. During a scrimmage I took off on a fast break and called for a pass, it wasn't thrown so I pressed pass again until they threw it. Once I got the ball, My Player immediately passed it to another player even though I had an open court. It's most likely the touch passing, because if you press pass before you receive the ball and the directional stick he is supposed to make a quick pass.

Beginners might think that it is really hard to beat your defender but it isn't hard at all to initiate a layup animation after creating a tiny bit of space with isomotion or a screen. Only problem is that you might be penetrating into traffic, which was resulting in alot of contested and missed layups.

Oh, and 2K Insider loves to chime in anytime you leave the controller idle for 10 seconds or try to boost an attribute that isn't needed for you player type.

I don't like the create a player that much. In someways, it feels like it has less customability than last year. Several of the hairstyles looked really detailed in texture and shape, while others looked blurry. All I can say is that my player looks like a really light skinned black guy with bags under his eyes that cannot be removed.

On another note, there are three people on the leaderboards with their player at a rating of 99. Either they are hacking, found an exploit, or something. Nobody else has even cracked 60.

the 99s are leftovers from the beta testing, ronnie said they are going to be removed soon

nope, i dont think so

if you got a PS3 though you could just setup a US account

Re: Nba2k10 Draft Combine

i was worried about the auto-backdown/post-up thingy....
so it's not working good?
well, it was said, that the gameplay of DC is not t same as in the full 2k10 game, so lets hope it only gets better.
and i haven't seen a basketball game where you don't have to tweak the sliders (usually alot)...

Re: Nba2k10 Draft Combine

Fri Aug 28, 2009 3:46 pm

I got it, played for a while, got bored. The create-a-player kinda sucks. It seems like its been in decline for a couple years now. I miss the red and yellow faces and full customization. It was impossible to create a character that didn't look totally black or asian. I didn't play much, and I was a point guard, so I didn't notice the auto-post up thing. So far everything has basically been like 2K9 with player lock and a bad player.

There was one thing I did like: the new rating system. I always thought the 50-99 system was stupid. Hopefully we won't see bad players like Al Thornton with mid-80s ratings this year.

Re: Nba2k10 Draft Combine

Fri Aug 28, 2009 6:10 pm

Oh yeah, forgot about the rating system. I guess that's why it seemed easy despite having a 41 rated player.

Re: Nba2k10 Draft Combine

Well, I guess I'll post my thoughts on it, now that others have started to.

Overall, I was not really impressed with 'NBA 2K10: Draft Combine'. It was fun at the start, but the excitement of initially playing the game wore off rather early on for me. It's been said that this is not the same as NBA 2K10 will be, but more of a "2K9.5". I don't like the changes they've made to the offensive controls, and on the defensive side of things there's a ton of work that needs to be done. I did find that keeping up the teammate grade was extremely easy, especially if you're a knowledgeable basketball player/fan.

One thing that was really annoying was helping out your teammates on the defensive side. In the half-court, you make a rotation, cut off the ball, and the rest of the team doesn't react. Dish to your man, score... teammate grade goes down. In a fast break situation, say a 2-on-1: a teammate's man has the ball, you pick him up, he dishes to your match-up for a lay-up. Teammate grade goes down, because the player you're matched up against scores. If in either of those situations you hug your man who's off-ball, and let another player score, there's no affect on your teammate grade. The grading system really encourages you to stick to your man like glue, even if in a situation where the ball is in the left corner and your man is free-throw line extended on the left side of the court.

I also found the 2K Insider pretty pointless, and overly (in a bad way) positive. Even when you have horrid games, he'll barely touch on what you did wrong. And all of his stories about legendary players get stale after awhile.

I'm not sure what is going to change in NBA 2K10, but I'm hoping a lot. I thought this was going to be a really fun mode, and finally something new to do offline, but if I end up going with 2K this year, I don't really see myself getting to far into the "My Player" mode without getting bored.

i've heard from many players that the DC gets boring rather quikly.... well, it's not a seperate game (imo), it's more like... like a.. .demo for a demo or something .. but there's a lot of good things to (drills are better than in 2k9 etc) which makes you really want to try out the full version.

Re: Nba2k10 Draft Combine

Sat Aug 29, 2009 8:34 am

I hate the teammate grade system. My player goes for 36 points on 78% shooting, almost singlehandedly leading my horrible team to a comeback victory, and get an F.

Re: Nba2k10 Draft Combine

Sat Aug 29, 2009 11:30 am

I totally agree. I started to get impatient because I was being ignored on the offensive side by my teammates while I was trying to move to open spots on the court. Not only that, but I found out that attempting to set a pick also means you are calling for a pass in certain situations. I pressed the B button a few times and my grade just plummeted. I got a "poor shot selection" for scoring directly under the hoop after pumpfaking two defenders in the air. I got a good pass for some reason just for passing it to a player on the wing, when I was in the corner. For some reason, I wasn't getting any increases in my teammate grade for making baskets in my last game. I'm guessing it was because my objectives were more defensive for that game.

If you don't like the objectives, you can quit and start a new game, no penalty or anything. They will randomize.

Re: Nba2k10 Draft Combine

Sat Aug 29, 2009 12:24 pm

I cleared the two non-teamwork objectives with flying colors, but my teammate grade put my skill point total into the negatives. With shorter players getting more skill points, I think this mode is really biased in favor of shoot-first PGs. I also thought it was dumb when I would sink a mid-range jumper and lose points for "poor shot selection", but miss a layup and get a "good shot selection".
