Moon and Miami Out-Gun Toronto (114-104 Miami)

January 2, 2010

The Raptors made their debut into the 2010 with a ton of promise, but in the end they managed to resemble the team that they were in 2009. Toronto started the game off in a spectacular fashion as they played uncharacteristically great all around basketball in the second quarter.

Toronto propelled themselves to an early lead by half-time as they shot 60% from the field after superb play from Chuck Terrell and Martell Webster fuelled a 17-2 run by Toronto for a double digit lead in the second quarter. Both finished with great games as Terrell stuffed the stat sheet with 28 points to go along with 7 boards and 5 dimes and Webster hit 3 three pointers and finished with 13 points off the pine.

Ex-Raptor Jamario Moon however, had other plans. The Heat forward scored 13 points in the third quarter to answer Toronto's fantastic second quarter and the Raptors began to struggle to maintain the lead. The Heat broke the game wide open in the fourth quarter and showed why they are the number one seed in the Eastern Conference as they rallied behind Dwyane Wade's hot mid range shooting and Mario Chalmer's and Moon's three pointers.

Image
Terrell continued to impress on the offensive end, but it was all in vain.

Notes:
-Former Raptor Jermaine O'Neal's fantastic play in the middle has helped propel the Heat into first place in the Eastern Conference. He has returned to old form as he is averaging 18 points per game, 9.5 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists per game.
-Miami improves to 9-1 in their last 10 games
-Terrell's 3 three pointers is a career high for him. The Raptors also shot 11/24 from beyond the arc, one of the team's best outting in terms of shooting the basketball from three.

Dunk By Frye Halts Raptors' Losing Skid (110-106 Raptors)

January 6, 2010

Channing Frye not only claimed his first double-double of the season with his new team, but he also provided a crucial play down the stretch to break an exciting stalemate between the Raptors and the Magic. The Raptors' temporary starting center scored 12 points to go along with 11 boards, but his big moment came at the 35.7 second mark of the fourth quarter.

With both the Raptors and the Magic locked in a tightly contested game that featured a plethora of lead changes, Frye helped the Raptors take a 102-101 lead in the waning seconds of the game by throwing down a vicious one handed dunk. "We were going back and forth the entire game," said Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy. In typical Van Gundy fashion, he placed the blame on his team rather than conceding to defeat. "It's like we expected them to give up just because we're used to seeing them collapse in late games. It was our awful interior defense late in the game that gave us this loss."

Frye's heroics would not be possible without rookie Chuck Terrell, however. Terrell went from being a playmaker in the early game (finishing wit ha team-high 6 assists) to a clutch scorer down the stretch to keep the Raptors within striking distance of the once elite but now struggling Orlando Magic. Terrell scored 12 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth, mostly off of free-throws. "He's growing every game we play," admitted Andrea Bargnani, who was the recipient of Terrell's many assists early in in the game. "With Bosh out you can see that he's trying to take his game to another level."

Image
Channing Frye's crunch time dunk saved the Raptors.

Notes:
-The Magic have slowly fallen off as one of the elite teams in the East, as they have won only 1 of their last 6 games.
-Both teams play each other next week on friday for a rematch.
-Chuck Terrell tied his career high of 6 assists this game.

Big First Half Hands Phoenix Loss (96-76 Raptors)

January 7, 2010

Chuck Terrell notched career-highs in both rebounds and assists as his near triple double helped the Toronto Raptors get off to a fantastic early start. Terrell finished the game with his first ever double-double - a near triple-double in fact - of 19 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists as the Raptors steamrolled the ailing Suns in the first two quarters. "People tend to forget that he's only a 19 year old kid," beamed Raptors assistant coach Alex English. "He's got a lot to turn, but it's scary to think that he's only scratching the surface."

The Raptors utilized their run and gun play by scoring 30-plus points in the first and second quarter, giving Toronto a solid 63-48 lead headed into half-time. The second half of the game was another story, as the Raptors scored only 32 points while the Suns managed just 28 through the final two quarters.

"We kind of lost our focus after half-time, but I think overall we did a pretty good job," admitted rookie Antoine Heller, who received additional minutes off the bench for the Raptors after his solid defense against Phoenix's backcourt. "I did a good job on defense and I think that helped set the tone in the second half."

Image
Terrell racked up career-highs in both rebounds and assists once again.

Notes:
-Phoenix's record and standing in the west is fairly similar to Toronto's as they are 10th place and fighting for the 8th playoff spot.
-The Suns are one of the top shotblocking teams in the NBA this season, as they are led by Amare Stoudemire's 2.06 blocks per game.
-Reggie Evans tallied his second double-digit game this season.

Raptor of the Week

Image
Chuck Terrell

The Raptors started off the 2010 year 2-1 and Terrell has excelled as an all-around player while making a significant impact in all three games. We all knew that Terrell was an above average scorer and rebounder, but he has also picked it up quite a bit in the passing department and getting his teammates involved. His developing chemistry with Channing Frye has been beneficial for both of them as his assists have skyrocketed while Frye has maintained steady 10 and 10 play as the starting center.

Andrew - To be honest my interest in the dynasty has waned a bit and combined with the fact that I have work on most days doesn't help with updates either. But hey, hopefully it's just one of those phases that I go through and the dynasty will be up and kicking hopefully until 2010.

Skillmatic and john26 - Yeah the Dora the Explorer bit was my way of giving the die-hard Raptor fans who read my dynasty (if they even exist) a little wink.

Clutch - Hopefully not. Priest is a double-double monster but all of the rookies this season are shooting terrible percentages. Terrell alone can probably win ROY with the numbers he's posting and the fact that he shoots over 43% from the field.

Sit and thierryhenry50 - I was hoping to go for that lame nba.com chat transcript feel that were usually done a few years ago, but I guess it was a little too much I admit.

MikeMan - Bosh should be up and playing by around the end of January hopefully. Right now he's probably at around 50% according to the dynasty injury report thinggy.

jettdaking! - Thank you for the compliments, and yeah I'm well aware of the crappy sim engine. I think it might have to do with the primacy ratings of the roster update being botched up since they're directly ported from the the newer Lives. It's not too big of a problem for me but it is one of those little things that irk me because I'm a realism junkie.

Terrell is rocking it. At least a positive week although a streak wouldnt be bad either I guess.

I understand that your interest has waned a bit .. its always the same for me at this time of the year when there are news for the new titles (2k10, live 10) I start to loose my passion for their precursor. But since you are playing live 05 I hope that you still have fun playing and can keep this thing up.

I like it so far ! (Y)

Whoah! Great week for your rookie..

Anyways, I've also had times when I just wanted to stop dynasty story making but then I suddenly get the urge and do updates relentlessly.. And one major thing for me is that my PC can't handle NBA 2k series that's why I know I gotta stick with Live.. Hoping to see updates in the future!

That can happen, my 09 Dynasty's been on the shelf for a few weeks but other things have been getting in the way. Given how close we are to the release of 10, I'll probably have to start simming so I can perhaps just play through the Playoffs instead. Hopefully I'll be able to start a Dynasty with 10 not too long after its release.

Heller Explodes in Final Stretch for Toronto (109-104 Raptors)

January 13, 2010

The Toronto Raptors keep rising as the Orlando Magic keep falling. This marks the second time the two teams have squared off in two weeks and both times the Raptors have come out on top. The game essentially mirrored the first time both teams matched up as the game was tightly contested throughout and would eventually go down to the wire.

Although stand out rookie Chuck Terrell continued to get his with a game-high 28 points, it was the Raptors' other rookie that got everyone's attention. First year guard Antoine Heller played out of his mind today, scoring a career-best 20 points while also grabbing 5 rebounds. "I'm so happy for him," spoke teammate Martell Webster after the game. Webster also played with Heller in Portland prior to the trade that brought him to Toronto. "He was always busting his tail out there and always played great defense, so I knew that it was only a matter of time before Coach Triano would see his talent."

And play defense he did. The 6'6 Santa Clara product tallied 4 steals and locked down former Raptor guard Vince Carter to only 3 of 13 shooting. Heller got a little help from Carter's bruised knee as he is currently listed as day to day. "Vince's knee was a lot more banged up than we thought," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "When we put a guy with size on him he just blew by them and when we put a smaller, quicker defender on him he would just shoot that 15 footer over them."

In yet another back and forth affair, the Raptors saw themselves down 102-101 with 47 seconds remaining. Heller proved to be the deciding factor in the game as he delivered a timely assist to Andrea Bargnani for a three pointer. The Magic were forced to call timeout and Heller showcased his quickness by stealing the inbounds pass for an easy Martell Webster dunk to seal the game as the Magic crowd grew dead silent. "I was just happy to be out there," grinned Heller. "I knew that if I worked hard and stayed patient my time would come and I managed to come up with some big plays."

Image
The past (former Raptor Vince Carter) got a glimpse of the future as Heller's explosiveness was too tough for Carter's knee to handle.

Notes:
-The Magic have lost 2 and won 1 in between the two meetings between the teams.
-Despite their mini-slump, the Magic are ranked pretty high many team statistics. They are second last in turnovers, seventh in points scored and ranked second in the league for field goal percentage.
-Chuck Terrell continues set new career highs for himself; this time by knocking down a career best 4 threes.

Bosh Declares He Will Play in February or Earlier

Image

Mike Ulmer - raptors.com
January 15, 2010

Image

Chris Bosh has not made a lot of noise after being hampered by a torn achilles tendon back in late December, but has finally announced a deadline for his return to the hardwood. "I was expected to be out for around a month, and it's recovering on schedule," The 6'10 forward explained after the Raptors victory over the Magic. "I am going to be suited up by February at the latest, make no mistake of it."

The Raptors have seen mixed results with Bosh out of the lineup. They clearly struggled without his offensive presence early, but have recently strung together a three game winning streak behind the impressive emergence of Chuck Terrell and the solid play of Andrea Bargnani. Toronto is currently 4-5 without Bosh in the lineup.

"After the Marion trade I think we got a lot more talented," said Bosh. "Our shooting is stronger, our defense at the guard is a lot stronger and guys like Chuck have stepped it up. I'm glad to see us adapting to my absence from the floor."

Bosh boldly predicts that he will either resume playing on the 30th against Phoenix or February 1st against the Indiana Pacers, which was ironically the same team he played against when he injured himself.

Other NBA News - Trades
Wolves and Wizards Swing 6 Player Swap

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Reports indicate that the Wizards and Timberwolves are on the verge of completing a 6 player deal where Minnesota sends Mike Miller, Randy Foye and Michael Olowokandi to Washington for Kenan Royal, Etan Thomas and Darius Songaila.

Washington wished to unload unhappy lottery pick Kenan Royal after numerous alleged reports that he was complaining about playing time while the Timerwolves were in desperate need of a young point guard with Randy Foye struggling to run Minnesota's offense. The T-Wolves also wished to deal veteran guard Mike Miller due to the emergence of rookie two guard Adam Otter.

Foye has averaged 13.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists, while his teammate Mike Miller has put up 11.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest.

Grizz and Clips Swap Randolph and Q

ImageImage

Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace surprised his team with a seemingly directionless trade by acquiring power forward Zach Randolph from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for guard Quentin Richardson.

From a statistical and talent standpoint, Memphis came out on top as Randolph is currently averaging 15 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game in comparison to Richardson's 8.5 points per game and 2 rebounds per game. However, Memphis already has stockpiled young talent at the power forward position with Hakim Warrick and Priest Askins, making the addition of Randolph seem redundant.

Martti. - Terrell's strength rating is pretty good so I usually just bully other teams in the post with him for an easy score whenever I need one. I'm also getting the timing of his jumper down as well so his three point percentages are starting to slowly climb.

hova- - It's kind of weird for me, I'm usually too disinterested to update my dynasty but usually when I take the time to finally force myself to write up recaps and stuff I usually thoroughly enjoy it. Thanks for continuing to follow this even though it's being updated so irregularly though.

XpLosibo - Yeah to be honest I never expected Terrell to be passing so well since I first started using him purely as an offensive player. I guess when you force feed him the ball that much he tends to rack up the assists as well.

homicide1550 - Haha, yeah, I had this big time urge to play 2k9 again but once I installed it my laptop couldn't run it which sent me flocking back to Live '05.

thierryhenry50 - Nah, too lazy to dbf edit him into the game and I am one of the Raptor fans who never really liked him despite some of the defensive toughness he would bring to the team from time to time. Besides, he's traded to Milwaukee now. :P

XxCavaliers - Yeah Carter's been playing absolutely attrocious ball since he injured his knee. The team doesn't give the ball to Howard as much as I thought they would.'

Clutch - I never expected Heller to be so explosive and with Carney struggling, I wouldn't be surprised if he was going to start alongside Terrell soon. That would make one hell of a rookie duo.

Sit - Thanks for the compliments good sir.

Andrew - Thankfully your recent roster update has perked interest back up in Live once again.

Antoine Heller was playing against an injured Carter, I hate it when I'm seeing the Orlando Magic losing, especially in close games :x . My team will be back to kick yo' Dinosaur Ass . ( LOL, just some NBA.com type comments )
When is the next time that those teams will clash again ? and where's Dwight ? who defended him ? Bargnani ?
Frye ? He would've kicked some PF butts !
