Game Locks Up

Postby over_it on Sun Dec 08, 2002 12:00 pm

Hi all,

When I manage to play the game it looks great, but during gameplay and even on the main menu, my PC hs locked up, and all I get is a looping sound through my PC speakers.

I have been in contact with EA Technical Support who have suggested lowering the accelrator level of my sound card and lowering the in game detail. This has not solved my problem and I just don't know what to do next. I have the following hardware/software:

Operating System Windows XP Service Pack 1 5.1.2600
DirectX : DirectX 8.1

CPU Type : 907 MHz AuthenticAMD Thunderbird

Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400
Video Driver : nv4_disp.dll
Driver Version : 6.13.10.4072
Manufacturer : NVIDIA
Video Memory : 32 MB

Sound Card : Creative EMU10K1 Audio Processor (WDM)
Sound Driver : ctaud2k.sys
Driver Version : 5.12.01.0244

RAM : 384 MB Total
172 MB Free
Virtual RAM : 924 MB Total
766 MB Free

Default Browser : Internet Explorer
Version : 6.0.2800.1106

Can someone please offer any advice that may help me. It was $70 Aus, don't want to think I threw $70 away, unless EA will accept it back.

I had the same problem but after hours of trying to find out why, i found out that the fan of my 3d card which was Geforce2 was not working, so I bought Radeon 7500 and Nba Live 2003 is working better than ever!!!

ronleano2001 - I do not understand what you have said, can you explain what you mean by "mianboard is ALI and my game is stock during the game and i hear from my speaker beeff when i changed my motherboard from Via chipset and it will run smooth".

emadhn15- I doubt that's the problem as other games run and my PC never crashes during video playback.

well i haven't narrowed it down yet to which one, but changing these 3 things stopped my machine from locking up.

VYSNC ON (it was off)
16 bit resolution (it was on 32 bit)
Not using any defensive strategies or matchups. (i had previously been double-teaming and pressuring specific players).

There's a known conflict between the ALI chipset (of the motherboard) and Creative sound cards. When you play 3d accelerated games, the game will randomly lock up and there will be a high pitch, non-stop beep from the speakers.

It took me a lot of heartache before I figured it out, since the game lock-up made me think that my video card had a problem.

What you can try is going into your system BIOS and lowering the AGP Aperature Size (that is what Creative recommends). Lowering sound acceleration will not help.

As a temporary solution, I went ahead and disabled my Creative sound card and enabled my onboard sound--at least I can play nba live now.

So, first see if you are using the ALI chipset. If you are, try the suggestions listed above. Good luck!
