Tracy McGrady scored 26 points to lead the Houston Rockets to a 110-97 win over the struggling Seattle Stealth.
Juan Dixon chipped in 17 from off the bench and
Aaron Brooks added 16. Rookie C
Everett Peterson had a career high 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks to make up for an average game from
Yao Ming .
Seattle’s
Kevin Durant showed few signs of a twisted ankle as he racked up 34 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists.
Raja Bell scored 18 but Seattle got little from their starting frontcourt as
Jamaal Magloire and
David Lee combined for just 16 points and 6 rebounds.
“We didn’t get off to the best start,” Stealth captain and starting PG
Jason Kidd, who finished with 10 assists and 5 steals, stated, “Houston took control of the game in the first quarter and we did not compete after that. Kevin tried his best to keep us in it but we didn’t step up and give him the support that he deserved and the team needed.”
Seattle was aggressive from the opening tip and quickly built a 10 point lead but Houston promptly erased it and powered their way to a commanding 20 point lead by the end of the quarter. The Rockets’ full court press was devastating and resulted in Houston taking a 25 point lead halfway through the second quarter.
Durant tried his absolute best to keep his side in the game but his scoring heroics would be cancelled out by Houston’s tough press and teamwork. “I can’t do it all by myself,” the NBA’s leading scorer stated, “I need my guys to step up like Houston’s role players did.”
At one stage in the game, Durant let his emotions take over and he tripped the Rockets’ McGrady. McGrady got up, chased Durant, and grabbed the back of his jersey before game officials separated the two players. McGrady refused to comment about the altercation in which both players were given technical fouls. Durant was candid about the encounter, “I play with a lot of heart and a lot of passion but that play was an accident. I don’t try to hurt other players.”
Notes: Durant has scored 30+ points in 4 of the last 5 games…
Ron Artest had a quiet game after arriving to it in his underwear. His coach looked past that and allowed him to start the game but Artest did not play much more than half of it…
Shane Battier was hurt in the first quarter and left the court with 1:35 left. He did not return to the game…
