Good week, but tough loss against Golden State. Stephen Jackson didn't shoot a great percentage, but he still got it done on the offensive end.

Terrell is a great spark plug on the bench for you. 30 points in a game, 10+ in every game - impressive.

Nice to see Bargnani finally proving that he was worth to be the #1 pick.

The Ups and Downs of Calderon
Jose Unhappy with his Current Play

Image
November 20, 2009
Doug Smith
SPORTS REPORTER

On November 12 the Toronto Raptors had an exciting victory over the Washington Wizards. The high octane duel between two high-scoring teams that saw Toronto come out on top in the final quarter was not only a treat for the screaming fans at the ACC, but also should have gave the Raptors' a thrilling sense of accomplishment. You could see the intensity from pulling through such a tightly-knit game soon turned into excitement and laughter as the Raptors' emptied into the locker room.

While everyone was grinning from ear to ear after the hard earned victory, Jose Calderon was the only one who remained stone-faced. Looking at his 3 of 12 shooting from the boxscore could easily tell the story about his demeanor.

Yes, Jose Calderon has been averaging a solid 12.6 points per contest, and yes, he has been in the top five of assists per game 12 games into the still-young season. However, Calderon has been quick to criticize his own play. "I'm playing terrible basketball and I know it," Calderon lamented during a post-game interview against the Warriors.

By digging deeper into his statistics you can find traces of his poor play. The Spaniard has been shooting an uncharacteristic 40% from the field and a bizarre 65% from the free throw line; a shocking contrast to the near record breaking free throw shooting streak that he experienced last season. "Bryan and Jay put so much faith in me, but I feel like I'm disappointing them with my play," he sighed.

While the Raptors have strung together a fairly solid start to the season, all 12 games have shown different shades of Jose. One game Jose plays weaker defense than an immobile pylon; in another he can seemingly brick every shot that leaves his hands. Then there are times when he can be mentioned in the same breath with the likes of Chris Paul and shows his versatility and playmaking on offense while effectively hounding his man on defense. It's Jose's roller coaster-esque inconsistency that wavers the the confidence of the fans and teammates alike.

Two seasons ago, Calderon was the model of consistency; there was never a shot that Jose could not swish. Not a single trace of any flaw when the ball was in his hands and the offense flowed through his command. Calderon battled through fatigue and injury last season and everyone has remained supportive of Calderon due to his fiery competitiveness and passion on the court. Although Calderon says and that he is 100% healthy, he has yet to perform at the level that commanded his lengthy contract extension.

Whatever the problem may be, Jose vows to fix it before the season ends. "A lot of people are doubting me and saying that I can't do this or that," Calderon said. "There's no way that I'm letting them have the last laugh."

Jose Calderon's erratic play has fans speculating on the long term future of the Spanish guard.

Andrew wrote:Great work as always. Nice to see Terrell starting to live up to the "hype", you've definitely got to be happy with what you've been able to do with Bargnani as well. Simming a bit more to speed things along probably wouldn't be a bad idea, as a matter of fact I'm thinking of doing the same in my Dynasty.

Yeah, even though I was pretty adamant about retaining Marion early on in my dynasty I have made a complete 180. Terrell's ability to get to the line is absolutely insane because of Live's tendency to foul players shooting a mid range jumper (Terrell's bread and butter). I don't really see the need for Marion since he pretty much can't score anywhere aside from layups/dunks and the occasional three every now and then. His defense hasn't been up to par either so I'm not too sure if Marion will stay as a Raptor for this season. I'm having difficulties ironing out a deal right now though... So that might have to wait.

hova- wrote:Very good week. Chuck Terrell on fire. Hes shooting a good percentage and his FT% is superb. With Bargnani and Bosh you have some nice inside play. The pieces are there, just keep putting them together. (and stop shooting threes with Marion ;) )

You certainly caught me there, hah... Marion's three point rating is only like 66 in the game, so it's not as terrible as it is in real life, nor is it good enough to have people actually respect his shot so I usually am baited to taking a ton of 3's with Marion.

XxCavaliers wrote:Good week, but tough loss against Golden State. Stephen Jackson didn't shoot a great percentage, but he still got it done on the offensive end.

NBA Live is the king of having players who go 1 for 348209280 nail some sort of clutch or game winning buzzer beating three pointer. Not too surprised in that regard, but I was pretty satisfied overall with the week despite the loss.

While I am pretty satisfied with Terrell's coming off the bench I'm seriously contemplating moving Marion for more depth to allow Terrell to grow... He can easily be a 20+ ppg scorer if given more minutes.

Thank you for taking the time to read through most of my posts, it's nice to see that you took the time to do so. I had a little DBF editting magic to help me out with Terrell, but when I actually attempted to scout him with NBA Live's shitty 1 on 1 thing he already had a knack for being a really versatile player on the offensive end and given the Raptors hadn't had a really effective scorer on the wings since Jalen Rose I was really tempted to select him with the third pick.

Sounds like an interesting story developing there with Terrell emerging as a star and making Marion expendable. I'm interested to see where you go with that and what deal you'll make if you end up pulling the trigger on one. I enjoyed the Calderon article too, hopefully you can get his production to be a little more consistent as the season progresses.

just caught up on this and have only 1 question... where can i buy a Terrell #0 jersey? :) he's like my fav raptor right now as he reminds me of a dominant rook i had w/my Rockets in the early days; although i'd hold off on trades til you're certain he's the real deal for the longterm (i know my dominant rook started tanking and found himself in a different uni by AS Wknd)

Calderon is still having a good season, many PGs dream of his numbers. I am used to having bad FG% with my PGs because I usually take too many shots with them. Im really looking forward to seeing some deals youve worked out for Marion.

I find that sometimes. I find it's easy to get trigger happy from downtown and that brings down the percentages for me, as traditionally three point shooting has been my weakest skill in Live.

Raps Outlast Nets in Tripe OT Thriller (148-141 Raptors)

November 22, 2009

It was simpy a war of attrition that allowed the Toronto Raptors to come out on top. The three extended periods meant that the Raptors were forced to dig deeper into their bench than usual to keep their starters fresh while getting some nice surprises when some of their young prospects got extended minutes. "Our young players off the bench deserve as much of the praise as the starters," Raptors head coach Jay Triano said. "We got some really good minutes from Crittenton and O'Bryant and that allowed Bosh and Calderon to keep their energy up throughout all those overtimes."

Patrick O'Bryant was seldomly used throughout the season but saw some crucial minutes during the first two overtimes as he collected his first ever double-double of the season. "I'm happy for Pat," said teammate Rodney Carney. "I've been in his position before; not getting minutes can be tough on a guy but he's kept a good attitude about it."

The game throughout was essentially a battle between all-stars Chris Bosh and Devin Harris, with each player helping their team swing the momentum back and forth for their respective teams. The Raptors were up by 1 point with 1:24 left to play, but Bobby Simmons hit a corner pocket three ball to bring the game give the Nets a 2 point advantage. Despite the clutch jumper by Simmons, the Raptors had some big plays down the stretch with Calderon knocking down a jumper to tie the game up and Chuck Terrell picked off an errant pass for an easy coast-to-coast layup. Chris Bosh was also fouled within the last 47 seconds of the game and hit two freethrows to make it 101-97 in favour of the Raptors. The Nets simply wouldn't go away as Courtney Lee hit a jumpshot while Bosh missed an easy floater at the other end. This allowed the Nets to rally for one final baby hook by Sean Wiliams, tying the score at 101 a piece when regulation ended.

It wasn't until the third overtime period when the Nets seemingly collapsed from the fatigue. The Raptors went full throttle in the third extra period as they got an immediate 7 point lead within the first two minutes from a Shawn Marion three point play and two consecutive Rodney Carney dunks. "We simply outlasted them," said Andrea Bargnani, who showed ice water in his veins by knocking in a big three with 9.5 seconds left in the second overtime to tie the game up for another extra session. "It's not a good way to win a game but we'll take it."

Image
Patrick O'Bryant gave Bosh and Bargnani an extended breather with his great play off the bench.

Notes:
-The Nets have a well balanced attack led by sophomore big man Brook Lopez's 15.8ppg. All starters score under 15 points per game but more than 11 ppg.
-The Nets are in a similar position to the Raptors last season, where they shoot a high freethrow percentage (third best in the league), but are second last in attempts. Ironically, the Raptors are 4th in the league in free throw attempts this season, receiving a huge boost from Chuck Terrell's slashing ability.
-Brook Lopez gave the Nets a scare as he injured his knee on a collision with Chris Bosh with 3:17 left in the fourth quarter but would return to play in the last two overtimes.

Detroit's D Too Much for Toronto (109-93 Pistons)

November 27, 2009

When Chris Bosh performs at a high level, his teammates usually help pick up the slack as well and the Raptors can usually come up with a 'W'. This night, however, was not the case. The Detroit Pistons showed the Raptors the meaning of team basketball, allowing Bosh to go for 28-10 while locking down all of the other players on the floor for Toronto.

"It was pretty frustrating to have my teammates be shut down like that," Bosh said. "I think we play our best ball when everyone's playing well. That didn't happen tonight."

The Raptors had failed to shoot above 40% for three of the four quarters, as Detroit's backcourt hounded and disrupted Toronto's offense greatly. The Raptors at the same time looked discouraged to play defense when their offense wasn't clicking, allowing Detroit to shoot 65% in the opening and final quarters.

Detroit immediately took control of the game and led by double digits for most of the second quarter. The Raptors would battle back by playing some defense themselves in the third quarter, getting as close as 67-62. The Raptors' offense refused to heat up which simply allowed the Pistons to blow them out in the fourth.

Image
Detroit's stingy defense did not allow anything easy in the paint.

Notes:
-This is the start of Toronto's second back to back of the season... The first back to back was coincidentally against Detroit which was another loss for the Raptors on Nov. 8.
-Even though McDyess is nearing the twilight of his career, the power forward has been averaging 15-10 while also being ranked 2nd in the league in offensive rebounding and 5th in total rebounds.

Hot Shooting Stings the Raptors (109-97 Hornets)

November 28, 2009

Today's game was a classic example of Toronto's inability to defend. The New Orleans Hornets from start to finish bullied the Raptors in both the paint and the outside, showcasing perfectly the Hornets' inside-outside attack led by forwards David West and Peja Stojakovic.

The Raptors were able to keep up with the Hornets' pace in the early going, trading shots early. New Orleans however began to make adjustments to their game plan, playing a zone defense to crowd Bosh and Bargnani in the paint, which has been an achilles heel of the Raptors that has been exploited time and time again. "We gotta start making our shots man," said Javaris Crittenton, who had a nice game off the bench with 10 points and 5 assists despite the poor shooting by the Raptors from beyond the arc. "When we can't get the ball to Bosh we are in for a lot of trouble."

The Hornets would take a 55-49 lead by halftime after going through a stretch where they hit 9 of 10 shots. Toronto managed to counteract this in the start of the second half by playing small ball, sliding Marion over to power forward and Bosh to center which enabled a run for the Raptors to retake a 62-59 lead. Chris Paul would not let his team falter though, as he hit back to back threes to give the Hornets the lead once again. David West's offensive rebounding netted him 12 points in the fourth quarter as he helped push Toronto back for another double-digit loss.

Image
In addition to creating his own shot, Chris Paul kept his teammates hot with his stellar slashing ability.

Notes:
-Peja Stojakovic has enjoyed a resurgent season, becoming an all-around stat stuffer as he is leading the Hornets in scoring with 20.1 points per game to go along with 6.8 rebounds per game and 3.7 assists per game.
-This marks the third time that long-time fan-favourite Morris Peterson returned to the Air Canada Centre. He was greeted with a standing ovation but failed to play any major minutes for the Hornets.
-The Raptors have yet to win a game this season when they play in a back-to-back

Bargnani Helps Raptors Battle Back in Overtime (125-120 Raptors)

November 30, 2009

Andrea Bargnani once in a while likes to play the role of Chris Bosh for his team, but Jose Calderon was the one who finished the game as the hero. The seven foot Italian center put the Raptors on his back as Bosh struggled to find his stroke against former defensive player of the year Marcus Camby, while Calderon nailed big shots down the stretch to give the Raptors a come from behind victory.

Bargnani helped the Raptors weather a terrible second quarter where they only made 4 shots on 22 attempts as the Clippers jumped off to an uncharacterstic 57-41 lead by halftime after Thornton scored 18 points by the half. In typical Clippers fashion, the fourth quarter saw the momentum shift to favour the Raptors, or rather, to Andrea Bargnani. Il Mago scorched the Clippers' front court in the final quarter, orchestrating an 11-4 run to bring the Raptors to within 3 points. The Clippers managed to fight back with a miniature run of their own, closing the gap back to 99-89 points after a Camby three point play with 2:37 to go. Bargnani then sparked another 7-0 run by nailing a short up and under in the post and a free throw line jumper which was followed by Chuck Terrell free throws.

Things began to look bleak as Thornton and Gordon had unanswered buckets to give the Clippers a 107-104 lead with 13.5 seconds left, but a Jose Calderon three pointer with 0.8 seconds on the clock managed to send the game into overtime. Calderon also nailed another three point dagger with a minute left in overtime to give the Raptors the lead down the stretch.

"That's the Jose we're used to seeing," Bosh said. "Andrea picked up the slack and kept the game close while Jose nailed the big shots. We needed this one after the two other losses this week."

Image
Thornton was impressive around the rim, but it just wasn't enough for the Clippers.

Notes:
-Jose Calderon and Baron Davis are fairly close with their assist averages, with Calderon averaging 7.9 and Davis averaging 7.2
-This game extends the Clippers' losing streak to 3 games.
-Although they are not the worst team record-wise right now, the Clippers are dead last in the league in assists, scoring and three point percentage.

Raptor of the Week

Image
Jose Calderon

Jose has managed to somewhat snap out of his shooting funk to post some pretty solid numbers this week. With most players on the team having an up and down week, Jose has been relatively consistent throughout. Jose has also hit some big shots down the stretch in the Raptors' wins against the Nets and the Clippers. Other than racking up a ton of turnovers in 2 of the 4 games played, Calderon has played his best week yet this season.

A couple of tough losses there, but the overtime games sound like they were pretty exciting. Not unlike real life, those kind of games are thrilling when you win, frustrating as anything when you lose.

BaronDavis1 - Thanks for the continued support even with your poopy internet connection.
Andrew - What I like about Marion is that his overall rating is really high (higher than Bosh's actually) which makes him pretty easy to be traded. If I DO trade Marion (still a big if at this point), I'd probably want to explore a scenario where I do get an upgrade in depth in return. I like a few of my bench players, but I haven't gotten a lot of production out of them. Another possibility is to package Marion with another starter and acquire a bigger name player but I'm too sure if the players that I want to acquire would be too unrealistic. That's pretty much all the information I can give out about that so far. :)

Clutch - You bring up a good point in rookies slumping, and while Terrell didn't play like crap this week he really made me second guess if I really should trade Marion. As of right now I also agree that it's way too early to deal Shawn from a realistic standpoint as well considering that he's been signed not too long ago. Right now I'm just playing the waiting game and writing recaps/playing games I guess.

Sit - Yeah, I think most games where Calderon played terribly was when I was still getting into the flow of things in terms of how to actually play Live. I don't think he'll play the way he did this week throughout the entire season, but I've definitely learned how to utilize him better after these 4 games.

hova- - I think the main thing I was trying to point out was that statisically Calderon was pretty adequate, but the inconsistency is so uncharacteristic of a player his caliber, especially before his heel injury when he was pretty much guaranteed to shoot 50% from the floor almost every night. He's definitely coming around a lot quicker than expected though.

thierryhenry50 - I'm totally torn about Marion too man. I don't know which player I like better, Terrell or Marion.

Skillmatic - Thanks for popping by Skillmatic. It's not that hard to be the best Raptors dynasty when you're probably the only Raptors dynasty going on at the moment. :P Yep, I've definitely contemplated starting Terrell, but my bench is looking a little thin at the moment and he pretty much brings the only offense for my second unit. Crittenton is blossoming pretty well as of late and O'Bryant has slowly crept his way into the rotation, but I will be lacking that major offensive punch if Terrell is starting. I also don't think that realistically Marion would come off the bench at this point because it's only been a month into the season meaning that Terrell is still a bit unproven and Marion has shown that he can be fairly productive at times too. For now I think I'll stick with this rotation barring any major injury to the starters.

Re: Its_asdf's Raptors Dynasty - Week4 Recaps

Nice week, but it seems like you cant get consistent at that point. Maybe you should really look for a trade to boost your team because now you are more like a 1st round and out team ...
Bigger names would be interesting to see but as I know you (you like to keep it realistic (Y) ) you would have to give up a lot .. not only Marion.
Keep it up, very interesting. Oh and that Hornets jersey looks nice.

Still going strong I see. I agree with Hova that you should make a deal. 9-7 is decent but you are only on pace for a 46-36 record, likely leading to a first-round upset. Keep it up. (Y)

Monthly Report - November

Rookie Rankings

1. Priest Askins (Memphis) - 14.3 ppg 10.7 rpg 2.17 bpg
The number one overall pick of the draft has been looking pretty impressive thus far, especially on the defensive end. Askins has teamed up nicely with Marc Gasol to provide a stable presence in the paint, ranking in the league's top 10 in rebounds and blocks for November. Offensively, Askins has been putting up a pretty good 14.3 points per game, but his 42% field goal percentage leaves much to be desired.

2. Chuck Terrell (Toronto) - 15.3 ppg 3.9 rpg 2.5 apg 1.25 spg
Terrell's niche as a big-time scorer was as good as advertised prior to the draft. The 19 year old freshman out of USC leads all rookies in scoring and has been a stellar energy player off the bench. Terrell's prone to shoot himself into and out of games, but for the most part Terrell's silky smooth mid range game has led to some impressive scoring binges in the fourth quarter that we have not seen out of a rook since Ben Gordon.

3. Fredrik Ratchuk (Sacramento) - 14.2 ppg 3.3 rpg 4.7 apg 1.27 spg
The rebuilding Kings have retained the same roster as last year for the most part, but have surprised many with their current 7th place standing in a very tough Western Conference. Most of the improvement has to be attributed to the play of Ratchuk. Although Ratchuk's stats were similar to that of last year's starting point guard Beno Udrih, Ratchuk's high-energy play in combination with his knack for performing in the clutch have helped revitalized the Kings somewhat.

4. Dean Friedman (Charlotte) - 10.9 ppg 3.7 rpg 3.3 apg 1.63 spg
In combination with Gerald Wallace and Raymond Felton, Dean Friedman rounds out a very explosive and athletic backcourt for Charlotte. The fact that Larry Brown typically despises giving rookies ample playing time speaks volumes for the character and work ethic that Friedman brings to the table. Friedman's terrible jumper (40% from the field thus far) is overcome by his rookie-leading 1.63 steals per game, but Friedman needs to show that he can score a bit more efficiently if he is to ever be a long-term piece for the 'Cats.

5. Demian Reirden (New York) - 5.4 ppg 2.7 rpg 1.5 apg 1.06 bpg
Picked ahead of the likes of Ratchuk, Terrell and Friedman, Demian Reirden has been putting up bust-like numbers. Sadly, not that many rookies are any better than Reirden statisically either. The French forward that was heavily compared to Boris Diaw seems to be facing scarce minutes due to a logjam at the power forward position even with David Lee playing out of position as the Knicks' starting center. The good news is, Reirden seems to have beat out Darko Millicic in the big man rotation and is now the sixth man off the bench. Hopefully things can start looking up for Reirden.

XxCavaliers - lol, I doubt it. My graphics card is pretty god awful, but then again I do resize the pics so the quality is probably upped a bit.

homicide1550 - Yeah I've been in a funk, especially when it comes to playing defense. When my shots are falling it's easy to beat the computer by trading baskets with 'em but outside of Calderon I really don't have a legit threat that can knock down shots from beyond the arc consistently (Bargs, Carney and Terrell all have below 70s rating for three pointers).

thierryhenry50 - Detroit's probably the hardest to team to play because everyone on that blasted starting 5 can shoot so well... You can't double Rasheed or McDyess in the post because Prince, Hamilton or Iverson simply do not miss.

hova- - If I am to pull off a trade, it would definitely involve acquiring probably a better interior defender (Evans is too short and his strength rating isn't high enough to defend the post) and some depth off the bench that can actually hit some shots. Right now I'm getting raped because the Raptors aren't knocking down their open threes at a consistent clip yet.

Lamrock - Nice of you to pop by again, but yeah I'm definitely planning on pulling a trade mid-December to early January. I personally think the games get too boring to play if you play with the same lineup over and over.
