NMC: THE BEST ALBUM EVER (read page 5)

I partially stole this from RealGM, but our version will be different. I wanted to make a music club much like a book club, where every week one of the members suggests an album of their choosing for everyone to download, then we basically discuss it... properly. Again this is an interest gauging thing, to be honest if even 4 people were interested we could go ahead with it because others could just join as times goes on.

The only real requirement is that you'd be willing to download an album every week and talk about it, not half ass it or not listen to it or whatever since that'd defeat the purpose entirely. So any interest? There must be at least 3 other people who'd give this a shot.

I should add, for the album downloads either we can just PM each other the links or post them here... I don't know if it's legal or not but people in the patching thread post links to various MP3's all the time for their shitty intro music patches so it's virtually the same thing.

-Instead of one recommendation per week, it's now one per five days

-Instead of having a week to review the recommendation, you now have ten days

What this means essentially is that there will always be two albums up for review, and each album gets a ten day window for itself but these windows will overlap. This means another rule:

-You can either review every album, or every second album.

So for example:

A recommends Album 1 (ten day review period for that album begins)

After five days...

B recommends Album 2 (ten day review period for this album begins, and there is still five days left to review Album 1)

You can choose to only review one of these (ideally you'd review both). If you review album 1 and not album 2, then you have to review album 3 or you'll get a strike and be bumped to the end of the list. If you review album 2 and not album 1, you have to review album 3 or album 4 otherwise the same applies. If you review albums 2 and 3, you have to review album 5 etc etc.

If you skip two in a row you will get a strike and go to the end of the list.
So basically you can only skip one at a time, is what I'm trying to get at. Obviously this isn't ideal but it should be better for people who inexplicably can't find a spare 40 minutes in ten days to listen to an album.

Also the strike system, as usual three and you're out. Strikes can also be assigned for half assing your reviews (by that I just mean one line reviews basically) because virtually everyone has put effort into theirs so far whether they liked the album or not, it's only fair to return the favor.

The key thing here is getting your recommendations in on time so we can keep the time limits consistent. So for example, we'll use the current lineup:

Joe is up next, thierry is after him and Jao after him.

Joe recommends, if thierry doesn't think he can get his recommendation in on the right day, he can give his recommendation in advance and we can just wait until the five days are up to start reviewing it. Only the next person up can do this, otherwise it'd just get confusing. If the person doesn't post theirs in advance and doesn't post it on the right day, then they'll be skipped.

We're not going by genres, just because if we do it kinda restricts what people can recommend. So if Shadowgrin likes pan flute music played by lesbian cheerleaders that's what we'll listen to. I personally hope this is the case.

Um, whoever replies to this first gets to recommend the first album.

I always liked M.O.P, never actually downloaded any of their albums but I'm actually kinda excited to hear this..

Listening to Conquerors I was a little bit worried that the metal aspect of the album might be sort of generic created on Pro Tools sort of sound, there was no real substance to it and it just seemed looped but Ground Zero was the exact opposite, it sounds like the music was played around the rap. I'd love some big ass double kick drums all through this. You can tell they're struggling a little to rap over this sort of beat but it's barely noticable, the chorus's in particular are really cool. I'm noticing a trend though, alot of the backing music seems to sound the same, the next few songs really kinda blend in together.

I think the concept for this was awesome and I'm not sure who they used to play the backing music but it really could have been great. One thing you'll notice with heavier music is that the vocals very very rarely drown out the music, it's the exact opposite in this one. I know they do it alot in their music but I think this is one where they should've turned the volume down a little bit. I get the feeling they were probably given the backing tracks and just told to rap over the top of it, if they'd collaborated more with the band and formed the music together I think this would've been pretty awesome. I still enjoyed it though, it's a good sign that rappers are willing to experiment.

M.O.P Review:
First thing that came to my mind when I listened to the songs - fucking ripoffs! Then I realized the group's name.

Metal music in the background with rap as vocals? I thought that sort of thing died alongside Limp Bizkit.
The rapping isn't bad but it isn't good either, but I still prefer it than Lil Wayne's. Maybe their "aggressive" style of rap has been done to death by DMX, JaRule (where the hell is he now?), and Busta Rhymes to name a few.
Excellent choices of background music they chose though.
Tracks that really got my attention are Put it in the Air, Raise Hell, and Robin Hoodz.
I think those three tracks had the best combination of their rapping and the background music, I was able to appreciate the rap and background separately and it's still good with both combined.


Overall the album isn't bad, I could imagine myself listening to this nonstop some years ago. It's not my cup of tea at this point.
I agree with Jae, they should work together with a/the band to compose a piece just to see what kind of sound they would produce with it. I think them rapping over the backgrounds and adjusting to it to give the song a decent flow hindered them a bit in showing what they can really do.

Yeah we'll make it 1 week, but it can vary depending on a few things... like if everyone reviews it and doesn't want to discuss it within the week we'll just move on to the next person instead of waiting.

I have never liked Rap Rock much at all. I still don't. This self titled album could be the exception to anyone who feels the same way. To put it simply, this is in your face, hype you up music.

My biggest problem with listening to the album is the volume level between the vocals and the acoustics. I thought it might be a youtube quality issue, and it is. The vocals blend in a bit better in the one I found. Shiner Massive is the name of the band they collaborated with. Upon reading that this was a remix album, I was surprised because many of the songs sound like they were made from the ground up as the music and vocals blend pretty well on a few of them.

Ground Zero starts what could have been a great album. Their style on this song matches the beat perfectly as syllables are spit with a timing related to the guitar notes. Shit like that makes me bob my head. The organ at the beginning of Put it in the Air reminds me of Eminem's old song Go To Sleep. The choir sound was overused, imo, but this is of course a fist pumping track, with one finger up. Fire could have been one of the most unique tracks on the album. The moment I hear the beat, I get the sense for bouncing. Unfortunately, the track fire doesn't have a rap style that fits it. The beat for Stress Y'all sounds like a remix of the beat for Fire, although I like this track. It's slow, but unique. The album should have ended with Get the Fuck Outta Here. It would have just been perfect, but no, they decided to throw Ante Up(Robbin Hoodz) on there, where the music completely fails. It sounds like they said, 'Let's just take the notes to the original and play them with a guitar.' It didn't work.

Just listened to it. The metal background seemed to match the songs, never knew rap could be kinda good to listen to. Fav song is Groundzero that was good.

Seems like a great idea, I'd like to join in as well.. I'll be getting the Mash Out Posse album later today and I'll rate it as soon as I'm done with it.

As for the YouTube issue, I think PMing a link to the participating members would be best. YouTube seems to downgrade everything to 128 kbps and Grooveshark is great and all, but not "every song in the world" is there; I just tried searching a few indie bands and I got nothing, not one song. I guess it can be pretty useful for more mainstream stuff, but I don't think anyone's planning on recommending Guns & Roses.. so yeah, my vote goes to PMing the links to download the albums.

Mash Out Posse - Mash Out Posse

Thoughts:

I had first heard MOP with Fire on Fight Night 2004 and then fell in love when Ground Zero and Put it in the Air were featured in NFL Street 2. After buying the album, i really thought these guys were too hard for me. The riffs were too metal for me at the time and the lyrics represent the part of rap that I dont like. However, these songs served as really good pump up music for basketball games and I even censored a few to use them as warm up music for games.

As you guys have previously said, sometimes it doesnt sound like they were even trying to match the music, but when they did, it makes me want to find more music like this (which i have honestly failed at doing). I love all of Ground Zero overall, but the one part of this album that just takes the cake for me is this part of Raise Hell. It's too bad that the part before and 30 seconds after just kills that awesome riff and tempo they had going.

Overall, these songs rarely get skipped if they come up at random for me, but I only listen to the full album once a month or so because of the incosistancies with their songs.

Review:
I'll admit I'm not a big fan of this kind of music. I'm not a big fan of rap, I'm not a big fan of metal (except for Stratovarius, some Maiden tunes and Malmsteen) and I'm not a big fan of mixing such diverse and equally "heavy-sounding" (as in opposed to "easy-listening," please excuse my lack of vocabulary) music styles.

With this in mind, I thought it'd be a good idea to listen to this while working out and, as Jao pointed out, they're actually pretty decent pump-up songs. I certainly wouldn't pay for this, nor listen to it voluntarily, but I wouldn't mind playing this while doing some sort of physical activity.

I still found myself skipping halfway through most of the songs, though, as both the "niggas/bitches/etc" and the inexpressive guitar riffs got very repetitive. The lack of a bass track and the overused snare notes (I thought more bass drums would have worked out better) made the second half of the album (except for "Raise Hell" which I enjoyed the most out of all the songs) very oppressing and loud. "Fire" and "It's that Simple" were particularly disastrous.

Most enjoyed song(s): "Raise Hell," bits of "Put it in the Air" and "Ground Zero."
Least enjoyed song(s): "Fire," "It's that Simple" and "Stand Up".

Overall rating: 2/5.

Just finished listening to Mash Out Posse, and I have to admit I had a lot of trouble getting through the whole album. My whole life I've only liked a few M.O.P songs so there rap style never appealed to me. The mash-up of the album is truly amazing, and while I didn't like all of the songs most of them blended smoothly. Not only am I not a fan of M.O.P, but I really really dislike heavy metal music.

I do have to admit that I signed up to this thread to broaden my musical choices. As of now I've been mainly Rap/Rock kind of guy, but there are songs of other genre's that I've liked. Like most people said, this kind of music would be awesome to listen to while working out, it sends jolts of energy down my spine. But sitting down in your room listening to this is pretty much a no no. So it took me a while to listen to this, partially because I was not hooked in from the begining.

Like Joe, I started skipping most of these songs half way into them, as it was really hurting my ears. I am basing my reviews off a doobie 10 point scale, and this album gets a 3/10.
