Ball Patch Help please!! How Can i make the Alpha picture?

Postby Jarus on Sat May 02, 2009 6:34 pm

i dont know if u understood the question..,. there is not enough space.........
you know when you make ball patches (edit the iff file of the aba ball for example) there is suquence 1 group 1 when u see the texture of the ball
and then in group 2 u see something like a 3d photo that looks like the texture of the ball...
and this is the photo i wanna edit but i dont know how...
because it's not like group 1.. it's different///... i made a ball patch in group 1,,, but group 2 stayed the way it was... i wanna make it look like the texture i made so the logos i put will be pop out in the game.....
example: this is group 1:(the pic from the game)
Image
i mannaged to edit....
and here's what i mean group 2:
Image
how did they make that??? i mean the logos are seem like inside.. i dont know how to explain.....

so this is what i have now: i made the ball
Image

but here is group 2 in my ball:
Image

how can i make it look like the ball i made... because in the game it looks messed up because they are not looks the same...........
is there something you do to the picture in group 1 to make it look like the green 3d in group 2? or u export group 2 and edit it???
please tell me what to do and how to do!!! please guys :D
thanks in advance....
btw-how's my ball?
sorry for dig out your mind im not so good in explaining in english

It doesn't work as well as the original because the normal map was generated from an actual 3d model.

What you can try to do is edit the normal map you made by applying some beveling to the lines to give it the "inside" look.

I went to check my theory and ended up making this for you, hehe.

The rings don't match his ball, though.

I messed up because I forgot PNG files don't use alpha channels, that's why it had all the brightness. So when I saved that file, it deleted an important part of the image.

All you have to do, Jarus, is take that blue image, copy the green channel to the alpha channel, copy the red channel over the green channel, and make the red channel and the blue channel completely black, just like the original 2k9 normal maps.

Jarus, why dont you write here step by step on what you did. In that way, Pdub can tell you which step is missing and then you can go on from there.

HINT: BE VERY SPECIFIC.

Example:
1. Open File.
2. Edit ball.
3. ETC.

Image files contain channels for their color levels(red green blue), and sometimes and alpha channel(black and white). In Photoshop, you can view these channels at the layer window by clicking on the channels tab. You can edit each channel individually.

Here.

If this doesn't work, save it as a DDS file.

Ok i understand you guys... i made a new version of my ball and here is what i did ........
first i made the ball texture.. it has 1 layer not locked...
like that:
Image
and then i went to filter>nvidia>normal map effect
then the ball went something blue:
Image
then i imported it to the iff file, and still it had all that brightness on the ball..
so i took the blue image, went to the channel tab and i only had 3 channels (red, green and blue) no alpha channel...
and now is the part i didnt understand...
pdub said :
1. take that blue image, copy the green channel to the alpha channel - i have no alpha channel so i skipped it
2.copy the red channel over the green channel - how do i do that??? i skipped.
3. and make the red channel and the blue channel completely black - ok i painted to red and blue channel in black and here is what happened:
Image
i imported that image and still i had all the brightness.... what to do now????? or could u explain how to do steps 1 and 2 (what you said?)

Note: all the images were saved in png format... do i need to save at dds??? i dont know what options to put when i save dds so i save png

thanks very much.....
if you nevertheless want to make another alpha picture for me with the new version of the ball i made (except of you help me with my question) just know that all the logos on the ball needs to be pushed inside like how i did...
thanks again  (Y)

DXT5 is the format you need to use. Here, I made it for you.

What you should do first is save a copy as a dxt5 dds, then reopen that in photoshop. The reason is because if you try to create your own alpha channel, the DDS plugin doesn't like it and displays an error: "too many channels to export". Saving as a dds dxt5 automatically creates an alpha channel. So,

Save as DXT5 DDS. Reopen the DDS image, and make ALL the channels black(basically make the entire image black).
From your original blue image, copy the red channel, and paste it into the green channel of the DDS image.
From your original blue image, copy the green channel and paste it into the ALPHA channel of the DDS image.
Save as DXT5.

after a lot of thinking i finally understood what u mean and i did what you said and im finally managed to do the alpha picture right and it worked! thank u very much! i appreciate that you were here all the time to help me.... youre a genius...... i hope you'll be there if i need something in the future..........
btw- all the process of making the alpha picture for the ball, is the same for cyberfaces????

and why did you say make the entire image black?? i dont get it...
i tell u what i did...
i took the blue image, saved at DXT5, reopen it, copy the green channel to the alpha channel, copy the red channel over the green channel, and make the red channel and the blue channel completely black. saved again at DXT5 ... just like u said and it worked good...

Yes it is the same for cyberfaces and the other green images you see in 2k9.

You did it correctly by making the blue and red channels black, making the entire image black before copying and pasting the red/green channels is just another way of doing it.

Forget making it all black. Copy the green channel to the Alpha channel(You may have to save a copy of the blue image as DDS - DXT5 so that the alpha channel is created because the DDS plugin doesn't like alpha channels that are created manually in photoshop). Copy the Red channel over the green channel, the make the blue channel and the red channel black. Save as DDs - DXT5 and your done.
