Wish list stuff: Internet-based stats update

Fri Dec 12, 2003 2:38 am

Given the proliferation of high-speed, always on broadband connections, I think that a viable feature for the next Live (or the one after that) would be to give players the option to update their team/player ratings and stats based on real-life NBA performance.

This optional feature would allow people to update player ratings to reflect the players' actual current level of play. If Steve Francis is shooting 48% from the field, for instance, this would automatically adjust Steve's NBA Live shooting percentage to match. Or, for instance, if Eddie Griffin is suspended (as he currently is; thanks a lot, Eddie), the game would list him as being suspended. If Piatkowski was returning from an injury and was not shooting the three up at his normal level, this would be mirrored in the game. If Yao Ming suddenly goes on a hot streak, scoring 21 with 15 reb and 3 blocks per game, NBA Live's Yao would perform just as well. This would allow a certain amount of realism and allow NBA Live players to reflect the real-life performance of their favorite teams.

I'm certain that there are databases available on the net that could be tapped into to provide this information. It would probably require a new game mode (NBA Live Live, for instance).

One BIG advantage of this would be that Net-enabled console players could have dynamically-updated rosters and ratings without all the tedious player/team editing required now.

Is this a decent idea, or am I just blowing smoke?

It's a cool idea, but one which will never happen. What was the last time EA put out a roster update of its own, let alone one that changes every day? Harharhar!

That's the beauty of this system; after designing the data interface and ensuring its proper operation, EA is required to do nothing at all. The data generated by real-life games is what makes the dynamic updates work.

I actually worked on a "stat to rating-converter" for NBA Live 2003 (a simple Excel database), but it took me too long time to finish and do it with all the players.

But this idea, however, seems very very good!
Except there will be some ratings the system cannot calculate (dunking, speed, jumping, and so on). Let's just hope that someone from EA Sports will hear us... I'm definately in on this idea! (Y)

great idea but i doubt ea would go through all this trouble. would be cool though. and if ea did add such a feature in nba live, it would definitely give them leverage over their competitors
