2008/09 NBA Regular Season Awards

Most Valuable Player - Lamar Odom, Chicago Bulls
Image Image
With 26.4 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game, 9.1 assists per game, 1.5 steals and blocks per game, and leading the Chicago Bulls to their first 50 win season since Air Jordan last put on a Bulls uniform (The Bulls finished 53-29, good enough for 2nd in the Central Division, and has the 3rd seed in the East going into the Playoffs), Odom has earned his first ever Most Valuable Player award, and will look to be the second person since MJ to win all 3 MVP awards (he has won the All Star MVP and Regular Season MVP so far, only the Finals MVP left). It'll be interesting to see how far the Odom-led Bulls can go in the playoffs, can they win it all?

Rookie of the Year - Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City
Image Image
A little bit of a surprise to see number 1 overall pick Derrick Rose to lose the ROY award to OKC's Westbrook with superior stats and team record, but it's most likely because of the injuries that had hurt Rose's case for ROY.
Westbrook was the 4th overall pick in the draft, the 6'3", 183lb guard out of UCLA has freakish athleticism, and complements last year's rookie of the year Kevin Durant very well, he was available in all 82 games throughout the season (as opposed to Rose, who played in only 64 games due to injuries), and averaged 12.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 5.4 apg, 1.5 spg over the season.
Look for the Thunder to improve dramatically with 2 former Rookie of the Year players in Durant and Westbrook, the future is bright in Oklahoma City.

Defensive Player of the Year - Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic
Image Image
Second in the league in Rebounds with 9.6, league leader in blocks with an astonishing 3.2 per game, there is no doubt that Dwight "Superman" Howard is a freak of nature, and this year's Defensive Player of the Year.
With his terrific defense, Howard has led his Orlando Magic right back to the playoffs yet again, getting the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference, but he will be facing against Lebron James and the 5th seeded Cavaliers in the first round, can Howard shut Lebron down? or will Orlando be going fishing early this year?

Most Improved Player - Lamar Odom, Chicago Bulls
Image Image
With this, Odom becomes the first and only player in NBA History to win both the MVP and MIP in the same season, the dramatic improvement in his efficiency (1st in league), pure point rating (1st in league), true shooting percentage (2nd in league), as well as the 5 major statistical categories (4th in scoring, leader in assists, 7th in rebound) has him making history.
Compared to last season, Odom's major stats are as follows: +12.2ppg, -2.1rpg , +5.6 apg, +0.5 spg, +0.6 bpg
Although he has had less rebounds per game, the other major improvements, especially scoring and assists, has him being the clear cut winner of this year's MIP award.

Sixth Man of the Year - Randy Foye, San Antonio Spurs
Image Image
The switch from Minnesota to San Antonio seemed to have worked for Foye, as he has, under the terrific coaching of Gregg Popovich, had similar, if not better production then he has had last season for the Timberwolves while not starting and playing about 12 minutes lesser each game. The addition of Foye has allowed Popovich to start Manu and still retain that same level of play from his second unit. The Spurs have been on a row and they have safely acquired the 3rd seed in the West, and will face off against the 6th seeded Rockets in the first round en-route to their quest for another title.

Coach of the Year - Michael Curry, Detroit Pistons
Image Image
A Rookie Coach getting his team the best record in the NBA? What more can you say, kudos to Coach Curry for leading his Pistons to a terrific 55-27 record, they should have no problems against the 8th seeded Bucks in the first round.
Coach of the Year award well deserved.

Bulls take a 1-0 series lead behind strong third quarter
Image

Chicago, IL - After trailing by as many as 17 early on in the first half, the Bulls used a strong defense and lots of hustle plays to close the gap to 6 to finish off the half, then came out strong and held the Nets to just 12 points in the third quarter to overcome the slow start to the game while scoring 33 themselves, the Nets would attempt to make a run in the fourth, outscoring the Bulls 41-33 in the quarter, but Chicago's defense and effort was just enough, as they survived against the Nets, 106-99.

The Bulls got the usual great play from their MIP/MVP Lamar Odom, who overcame early foul trouble and finished the game with 29 points, 9 rebounds, 10 assist, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in 30 minutes of play, just one rebound shy of a triple double. Odom shot 13 for 23 from the field and 3 for 5 from the free throw line. He also got chants of MVP whenever he went to the line.

But it was the Rookie that made the difference in the second half.

Overcoming a sloppy first half, in which he had 10 points and 4 assists, but 6 turnovers, Rose bounced back and dominated the second half, he scored 12 of his 22 points in the second half, and dished out 9 of his game-high 13 assists in the second half, 6 in the third quarter, Rose hustled for the ball and played the passing lanes nicely, getting 3 steals in the second half, 2 of which was from the third quarter alone.
Rose would finish with a double double of 22 points, 13 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals in 36 minutes on an amazing 8 for 10 shooting performance from the field, and a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity stripe. He would get the Jordan Player of the Game honors.

"I just went out there and played hard, i knew we had a bad first half, and i was careless with the ball, so i just went out there in the second half and played harder, and was more careful with the ball. My teammates did a lot to help, so i was able to find them and was able to get to the rim. They made it easier for me" said Rose after the game

Ben Gordon added in 19 points, and Sean Williams had a huge night of 16 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 blocks to add to the cause for Chicago.

Yi Jianlian led the way for the Nets, scoring 24 points on 9 for 16 shooting in the loss, Carter had 18 points and 5 assists, while Devin Harris walked away with a double double of 12 points and 12 assists. Brook Lopez had a great game with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks in limited minutes due to his injury, but it wasn't enough to overcome Chicago's huge third quarter.

"They just outplayed us, they had more effort and was able to shut us down, we need to play harder, like we did in the fourth" said Carter after the game.

The Bulls now lead 1-0 in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series against the Nets.

Game Notes
Derrick Rose brought the crowd to their feet with a one handed poster jam on Brook Lopez while running a fast break in the third quarter, the crowd chanted ROY, feeling that Rose got snubbed of the award....The Bulls had a season high 19 turnovers.....The Bulls bench was 8 for 19 and had only 13 points.....Jianlian had 2 huge dunks in the fourth quarter, a one handed jam from a fastbreak, and the other an alleyopp dunk from Devin Harris...The Bulls have not failed to score over 100 at home in any games so far, meaning that their fans got the free Big Macs every home game...

Odom, Williams leads Bulls to 2-0 series lead over Nets
Image

Chicago, IL - Regular Season MVP Lamar Odom was again one rebound shy of a triple double, his pal Sean Williams had his 3rd career 20/20, first one in a playoff game, and the Chicago Bulls shut the Nets down en-route to a blowout victory, 117-85 to take a 2-0 series lead over the New Jersey Nets in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

Odom finished with 26 points, 9 rebounds, 14 assists, 3 blocks, and 1 steal in 37 minutes of play, he was 11 for 16 from the field and 4 for 5 from the charity stripe. While Williams had 23 points, 20 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal in 35 minutes on an almost perfect 11 for 12 shooting performance from the field, hitting 1 out of 2 possible free throws during the game, and alongside Odom and Rose, led the Chicago Defense that managed to shut the Nets to just 28 first half points.

"We played a great game today, we came out fired up and ready to play, and we were able to control the glass, make stops and get the ball in the hole, it was great" said Odom after the game "Sean was great for us on the boards, although, it would have been nice for him to give me just one more, then i could have had a triple double" he added humorously

Rose chipped in 21 points and 7 assists in 28 minutes on 8 for 12 shooting, and was a perfect 5 for 5 from the line, Gordon added to the cause with 18 points and 5 assists (8 for 10 FG, 2 for 3 three point) to help the Bulls walk away with a landslide game 2 victory.

The Bulls did not have a single turnover in the first half, but had 14 in the second half.

New Jersey was once again led by the man out of China, Yi Jianlian, who finished the game with 23 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals in 31 minutes of play, he shot 10 for 14 from the field and 3 for 5 from the line. Carter had 19 points and 6 assists, Harris added in 12 points and 8 assists, and played a huge role in the 3rd quarter when the Nets attempted a comeback, outscoring the Bulls 33 to 25 in the 3rd period.

But it was not enough.

Del Negro put his starters back on in the fourth, and the Bulls safely pulled away to secure the win.

"We've got to play better then how we did in the first half, we need to come out with the intensity that we had in the 3rd, or else we won't be winning any games against this team" said Yi after the game "they are just too good, if you slack off a bit, or don't play as hard, they are going to come right at you and dominate you"

The Series will now shift to New Jersey for the next 3 games (game 5 if necessary) The Bulls lead 2-0 in this 7 game series.

nba_baller, opps, thanks for pointing it out, i'll correct it now...

Spaky, yeah, Odom is still doing everything on the court while Williams is dominating the glass and throwing down dunks like Dwight Howard

Sit, The NPC likes to go to Yi a lot, and he does a very good job too, it's tough defending him...

Odom's triple double gives Bulls 3-0 lead over Nets
Image

East Rutherford, NJ - With 30 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists. 2 blocks, and 2 steals in 30 minutes of play, shooting 14 for 19 from the field, Lamar Odom has secured not only his first ever playoff triple double, but has almost secured a guaranteed trip to the Conference Semifinals for his Chicago Bulls as they blow out the New Jersey Nets 135 to 93 in New Jersey earlier tonight to take a 3-0 series lead over the Nets. No team in NBA Playoff History has ever bounced back being down 3 games to 0 to win the 7 game series, and with the latest injury to their captain Vince Carter, even the chances of a miracle seemed bleak.

Carter went down on the floor hard after a collusion with Bulls center Chris Mihm on a Nets fast break in the middle of the 3rd quarter, he did not get up and immediately grabbed his right leg and was clearly in pain, he was carried off the floor by his teammates and did not return. Later tests revealed what seemed like a strained Achillies tendon, and VC would go through additional tests tomorrow, but chances are, he's done for the rest of the postseason, which could be just one more game for his team.

The Bulls got off to a slow start as the Nets came out with great intensity, Chicago was, at one point in the fourth quarter, down by as many as 12 points, but they rallied and closed the lead to just one at the end of the first quarter, they then rode on the momentum and shut the Nets down while scoring at a great pace in the second, outscoring New Jersey 40 to 18 in the period. After that, New Jersey never had a chance, as everything went the Bulls way.

Sean Williams had 19 points and 14 rebounds, Derrick Rose added in 19 points and 12 assists, while Ben Gordon drilled in 4 three pointers and finished the game with 16 points and 5 assists. Reserve Eric Snow had 9 points, 2 assists, and a game high 3 steals from a perfect 3 for 3 from the field in just 10 minutes off the bench to add to the cause.

New Jersey was led by Brook Lopez and Yi Jianlian, both of which scored 14 points in the loss, Devin Harris had 11 assists, but only scored 7 points from 2 for 7 shooting, he got the only 3 pointer that the Nets scored.

The Bulls played great defense in the game, holding the Nets to just 40% shooting from the field and 1 for 18, or 5%, from three point range. They had a staggering 43 assists in comparison to the Nets' 28, and out-rebounded them 47 to 34, the defense allowed them to score 22 fast break points in comparison to the Nets' 11.

The Series will continue 2 days later, right back here in New Jersey, where the Bulls would hope to complete the series sweep of the Nets.
