New Jersey Nets 2K9 :: Game Recap

ATLANTA (AP) -- Josh Smith's first miss from the line came at the wrong time for the Atlanta Hawks. Smith, who had made his another free throw, missed a chance to tie the game with five seconds left and the game went downhill from there for the Hawks as they fell to the New Jersey Nets, 106-104. Vince Carter contributed 31 points and four assists and Jason Richardson added 23 and two steals for the Nets, who now are 8-1, the league's best record. Carter made 14-of-19 shots and Richardson 10-of-17.

The game was tied, 93-93, before New Jersey's Devin Harris made a layup and a three-point play for Jarvis Hayes to open an eight-point cushion with 4:34 remaining. Atlanta, which lost its fourth straight game and are 2-7, pulled within 101-99 on a pair of free throws by Joe Johnson with 1:05 left, and after a series of fruitless possessions, the Hawks got the ball back with 11.3 seconds left. Johnson, who collected 22 points, three rebounds and two assists, drove the lane and passed to Al Horford (21-11 rebs), who was fouled by Kenyon Martin. Horford missed his first free throw, then sank the second to come closer, 104-101.

Then Harris made a pair from the line with 3.1 seconds to end the game, 106-101, but Atlanta's Mike Bibby fired on a double-pump trey for the final score, 106-104. The Nets connected on 15-of-19 free throws while Atlanta sank just 4-of-5. Hayes scored a season-high 17 points to pace New Jersey, who only had three players on double figures but had 33 bench points.

Atlanta had five players who scored at least 10 points. "When we move the ball and share the wealth, we are a much more dangerous team to stop," Horford said. "Everybody had a chance to contribute today and we had several players with double figures." Atlanta trailed at the break, 60-47, before opening the second half with 13 straight points and tie the game at 60. The Nets led by as much as 70-66 on a pair of free throws by Carter with 5:27 left in the third quarter and took an 77-76 advantage into the fourth quarter, but after Keyon Dooling made it 90-81 on a jumper, the Hawks went on a 9-0 run to make things interesting.

"I think we have to pick it up a little more and do a little better," Richardson said for the Nets. "It's all about us. We have to dig down collectively to get things done. The more mistakes we make, the closer these games are going to be. We have to start putting things together. Honestly, we're 8-1, but we can do a whole lot better and win by bigger margins." Carter added that "you enjoy the wins when they come like that and you hate the losses when they come like that. There is a fine line. This is a season in progress. Hopefully, when we have a 10-point lead, we can put the game away and have a comfortable victory."

Notes
  • Chris Douglas-Roberts' medial collateral ligament strain is day-to-day and he might be available in 3 days;
  • After playing only one minute yesterday, Maurice Evans played 5 today, to score 10 points;
  • Both teams shot over 55%;
  • Hawks had 19 assists against New Jersey's 26.

New Jersey Nets 2K9 :: Vince Carter's SLAM Magazine Intervie

Postby kibaxx7 on Tue Mar 10, 2009 7:01 am

VINCE CARTER'S SLAM MAGAZINE INTERVIEW
Nets.com bring you an exclusive transcript

Image
(Made my own version of the original SLAM cover)

Vince Carter is dribbling the ball at the top of the key. The Nets are playing an early-November game at home against the Golden State Warriors, and they're down one with just five minutes left to play. Suddenly, VC comes off a pick from Stromile Swift (now in Denver) and finds a path to the rim. As he taps the turbo and heads for the conversion, Warriors forward Corey Maggette leaves his man, Bobby Simmons, alone in the corner to help out on Vince. Just as Vince reaches Maggette, he pauses a tosses a no-look pass to Simmons, who swishes a three to put the Nets ahead. One minute later, with New Jersey sitting on a 64-53 lead, the Nets run exactly the same play. Vince comes off the pick from Swift and heads toward the rim. This time, however, Maggette sticks with Simmons at the corner. Vince launches himself for a dunk over Andris Biedrins. And one. The Nets go on to win, 71-62.

SLAM: Describe us that sequence, Vince.
Vince: Well, the defense had to give up something. They're not going to let Bobby shoot the three, and they're not going to let Brook (Lopez) shoot from the other side, so the defense is kind of caught in between. That gives me an opportunity.

SLAM: So, what are your abilities this year and what were your abilities in past years?
Vince: I've always had the ability to do a lot of things. I guess everybody wanted to see everything else, see the highlights. But the League has changed, and teams aren't going to let me just go down the lane, I have to earn it. Tonight it wasn't easy against the Warriors, but being able to do just a little bit of everything, that sets up that highlight play.

SLAM: Questions from the NLSC Forums. Sit from Australia: "Hey Vince, where would you like to finish your career? In New Jersey? And what are your thoughts on a reunion with your cousin T-Mac later in your careers?"
Vince: Thanks for the question Sit, let me tell you that I feel very well at New Jersey. We have a strong team that can fight in the playoffs and our coach wants us to go deep into the Finals, so I don't see why I can't finish my career here. About my cousin, that would be entertaining, I don't know how our manager can bring him here to NJ. (laughs)
Image

SLAM: "Vince, what is so different about this season that is making you win more games?" John from Australia. We know what you're going to answer, so don't make it very long because we were just going to ask you about it (laughs).
Vince: Thanks John. Yes, as SLAM sure knows, it's the almost total roster change we had for this season. We complement each other real well. Short enough? (laughs)

SLAM: "Vince, is Devin Harris a good teammate to you?" C-77 from Philippines.
Vince: Thanks C-77... a new kind of explosive? (almost 30 seconds laughs, Vince's on fire tonight). Devin is a great teammate, we had time to know eachother from last season when Jason (Kidd) was traded to Dallas, we also had some dinners together on our vacations, he's a funny guy as well. We do our best on the court and I think our record shows that.

"I'd rather be able to perform in the last three minutes
of the game, where it means something, rather than jump over
seven-footers all day."

We can say that Vince has been "The Dunker" in the league over the past years? Vince has played that part perfectly, perhaps better than anyone had ever played it before. He was the main man in Canada until all of a sudden he was traded to New Jersey. And, really, that's where the story begins, because an odd event ocurred along Vince's rocketship to stardom: he found the game. He found the game and the game saved him. It's not that Vince was miscast, he was a dunker, this was his specialty and trade, and something in which he excelled. But, as often as he soared, he was almost equally floored by roughneck power forwards and other dudes whose job was to keep from being posterized. To the changrin of many, almost certainly including people who are charged with editing NBA highlight packages, Vince wised up. Fewer forays to the rim, more skip passes and waiting for double teams. "I had to change the way I approach things," Vince said, "from being worn down and taking a beating. Sometimes you do it, and you don't show it until you get back here in the locker room. And then you're like, 'Why did I do that?' After a while, the wear and tear of it kind of breaks you down."

SLAM: How are you going through the roster revamping?
Vince: We have a lot of new guys. If you look at the locker room, from training camp last year, there's only two guys still here: me and Josh Boone. Everybody else was new, added that year throughout that year, and in training camp this year. So, instead of playing catch-up in the first day of the camp, and learning new things like, 'this is where Devin wants the ball', you can do that in the summer.

SLAM: So you credit those sessions with transforming the Nets from just a group of players into a real team.
Vince: Despite the crazy roster turnover, yes. Bobby, Brook and Yi Jianlian were the three new starters with me and Devin, if I remember, then Yi went to Phoenix and Bobby to Denver along with Stromile and we have two new players, Jason (Richardson) and Kenyon (Martin). We are now 8-1 through November and at the summit of the East, we will fight to the finish, man.

SLAM: What's the attitude and mentality of the team with this record?
Vince: Sometimes if we're not playing well and the fans boo us, like yesterday against Atlanta, we were leading by 20 points at the half and in the third they were leading by 5, it was like a short boo because we were 7-1 before the game (laughs). If you could hear us in the huddle, we're like "fuck it, let's just go play." That's the attitude and mentality. If we didn't do that in the summer, that wouldn't happen. We'd lose all these games, in fact we'd get blown out, I think, because we'd still be learning from each other.

SLAM: What do you think about the SLAM advertising campaign for this issue?
Vince: Wow man, I was shocked, I saw the giant cover of the magazine at the airport when we came back from playing at Atlanta, all my teammates making jokes, a big laugh. Devin said he saw it in the street, props to you SLAM Magazine.

Just because Vince is now a more complete basketball player than he was when he came into the NBA a decade ago doesn't make him any younger. There are still mornings when he can't get out of bed: "I actually have to just move my legs around to get everything loose, warmed up," he says with a chuckle. He used to be criticized for lacking in fundamentals, and now he's criticized for being too fundamental. Go to YouTube and search Vince Carter, then sort by date added, and you'll find clips of Vince hitting jumpers, making skip passes, blocking shots, swinging the ball to open teammates. You can hate him, that's fine, but if you love basketball, if you love fundamentals, and playing the right way, and when Vince Carter is on the floor, there's no way you can hate the game.

Don't dare compare Stephon Marbury to Stephen Jackson. Just because Jackson was not your typical, reserved Spur back in 2003 when he helped San Antonio win a championship -- and just because Marbury did a little lobbying this week for consideration from the Spurs if he becomes a free agent -- that doesn't mean you should expect to see Marbury's name on a list of potential fill-ins for Tony Parker's backup. Gregg Popovich got a lot out of Jackson in '03 and expressed interest in reuniting with Latrell Sprewell in recent years after coaching Spree in the early 1990s as a Golden State assistant. But I think we can safely say that Marbury is in a different category, which should explain why, based on everything I've heard, Steph won't be considered by the Spurs.

If you're looking for a Texas team that will give Marbury a real look, NBA front-office sources say it's Dallas. Not only does Mavs owner Mark Cuban have a friendly relationship with Marbury, but Cuban's team clearly needs more scoring off its punchless bench. With Jason Terry operating primarily as a shooting guard these days, J.J. Barea is Dallas' primary backup to Jason Kidd at the point. At this point, though, club sources say that the Mavs have merely resolved to talk with Marbury and consider the option if Steph continues to progress toward a buyout with the Knicks. There will be inevitable hesitations about what Marbury would do to the Mavs' chemistry --which already looks shaky under new coach Rick Carlisle -- and louder questions about how he'd fit as an understudy to Kidd after those two were swapped for each other in the summer of 2000, after which Kidd led the Nets to back-to-back appearances in the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003. Other rumors put Terry in Golden State (trade for Jamal Crawford), in Indiana, Utah and even Memphis (Michael Conley swap).

In other news, neither Phil Jackson nor Kobe Bryant is prepared to portray the Lakers' current bench bunch as their best in Jackson's nine seasons in L.A. Jackson, in particular, says he sees the supporting cast around Shaquille O'Neal, Glen Rice and Bryant on his first Lakers title team in 1999-2000 as the standard, as it featured the likes of Robert Horry, Derek Fisher, Rick Fox, Brian Shaw and rookie Devean George in addition to frequent starters A.C. Green and Ron Harper.

That said, Jackson, Bryant and Fisher -- all holdovers from the team of three-peaters that was dismantled after a loss to Detroit in the 2004 NBA Finals -- are loving the game-changing they're getting from the new crop of Lakers subs, fronted by Lamar Odom as a first-time sixth man and fortified by the athleticism and peskiness of Trevor Ariza, Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic. "Two different styles," Bryant said. "[The benches on] our championship teams could change games with their toughness. This [bench] does it by being so explosive, this is why we are 6-2 and first on our division." Said Fisher: "We always had a good bench back in the day, but I don't know if it was ever this athletic and versatile."

SATURDAY'S BEST • LeBron James, CLE
The reigning Player of the Week took Cleveland to a 133-100 win over Utah. James had 27 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists for a triple-double and the best performance of this young season.

Bonus Tracks • Randy Foye, MIN; Louis Williams, PHI; Ben Gordon, CHI; Sam Cassell, BOS
Foye led Minnesota to a 121-107 defeat of Portland with 27 points and 6 assists. Williams shot 9-of-9 to stay perfect from the floor for 24 points against OKC as Philly won 118-80. Gordon posted 40 points for the Bulls, who won just their 3rd game in 10 matches, a 112-102 triumph over Indiana. A special mention goes to Cassell who scored 26 points in 23 minutes, 10-of-13 from the floor for Boston.

SATURDAY'S WORST • Kevin Durant, OKC
The Thunder has lost their 5th game in a row. As the West POY, Durant couldn't step up to the honors; he scored "only" 14 points after averaging 36.2 in the other 4 losses.

Bonus Tracks • Morris Almond, UTA; Brandon Rush, IND; Greg Oden, POR
Almond had a 27 points night against Charlotte but only had 9 yesterday against Cleveland, 3-of-15 from the floor for Utah; the Jazz couldn't stop LeBron all night long. Pacers' Rush was coming from a 25-point night at New Jersey and a 26-point night at Cleveland but only posted 8 at Chicago, shooting 3-of-11. Oden was completely switched off by T-Wolves' Al Jefferson as he only shot 4 times, having 8 points. Jefferson had 20 and 12 rebounds.

LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics lead the Eastern Conference, while Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks and Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets top the Western Conference after the first returns of 2009 NBA All-Star Balloting presented by T-Mobile. James, the 2008 NBA All-Star Game MVP, is the overall leader with 640,225 votes. James paces all Eastern Conference forwards, followed by Garnett, first power forward (549,387). Miami's Dwyane Wade leads all Eastern Conference guards with 486,599 votes, followed by Detroit's Allen Iverson, listed as shooting guard (426,460). Surprisingly, Toronto's Jose Calderon is the point guard with most votes (329,047). Orlando's Dwight Howard, the reigning Sprite Slam Dunk champion, is running first at the center position with 296,295 votes.

Kidd leads all Western Conference players with 533,013 votes, followed by Paul (494,541 votes). Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant is the most voted shooting guard with 482,356. The 58th NBA All-Star Game will be played in Phoenix on Sunday, Feb. 15. The game will air live on TNT, ESPN Radio and in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. Phoenix also hosted the All-Star Game in 1975 and 1995. The 2009 NBA All-Star Balloting program, which also includes partner 2K Sports, allows fans around the world to vote daily for their favorite players as starters for the All-Star Game in a variety of ways, including: at each NBA arena; in 20 languages on NBA.com; and through mobile phones at t-zones® on T-Mobile phones or wap.nba.com for any wireless carrier. A T-Mobile-branded All-Star Balloting widget is available on NBA.com so that fans can "grab" the widget and place it on their blogs, social network pages, or personal websites allowing others to vote directly from the widget. Voting will continue through Jan. 11, for paper balloting and Jan. 19, for NBA.com and wireless balloting.

NBA All-Star 2009 is a week-long celebration that enables fans to experience the thrill of the world's greatest athletes playing the game they love and features a full slate of community-enhancing activities including the NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service and fan festivals such as NBA All-Star Jam Sessions; one hundred twenty players -- 60 each from the Eastern and Western conferences -- are listed on the NBA All-Star ballot. Voters select two guards, two forwards and one center from each conference. The 120 players on the ballot were selected by a panel of media experts who regularly cover the NBA.

SUNDAY'S BEST • Manu Ginóbili, SAS
Ginóbili racked up 30 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals for San Antonio; Spurs won 117-105 at the ARCO Arena over Sac-Town.

Bonus Tracks • Jason Terry, DAL; Richard Hamilton, DET; Randy Foye, MIN;
Terry had 36 points and 7 rebounds for the 8-2 Mavericks in a 126-122 win against New York, who had eight players in double-figures; Hamilton led Detroit to a 107-96 triumph over Phoenix, and Foye, one-day after a 27-point night against Portland, posted 21, including the buzzer-beater winning shot, in Minnesota's 119-117 win at Denver.

SUNDAY'S WORST • JR Smith, DEN
Denver couldn't defeat Minnesota at the Pepsi Center as they lost 119-117. Smith made 8-of-29 field goals, 2-of-15 treys. Horrendous.

Bonus Tracks • Grant Hill, PHO; Brad Miller, SAC
Suns' Hill shot 3-for-11 as Phoenix lost 107-96 against Detroit at home. Miller loss 117-105 with San Antonio at home too, but he made his way to a double-double. Yes, they were the worst today, in a pretty balanced day; the most difference win was San Antonio's (12 points).

First time I've noticed this dynasty, don't know how I missed it but fucking hell man, the work you've put into this with the presentation, in-depth story writing/recaps/articles, even adding abit of football into it (Y) is just insane man. One of the finest dynasty's I've ever seen and I'm glad to see this one going further than your others.

Keep it up bro.

Thanks man, about the Nets, yeah, it was my mistake, the thing is I took the 5 SFs and 5 PFs with most votes and then re-arranged the votes, that's why Vince or J-Rich are not there... Vince has more votes than a lot of PFs and J-Rich than a lot of PGs. Will adjust it for the next time, the 10 forwards and 10 guards with most votes.

Portland Trail Blazers center Joel Przybilla has been suspended for one game without pay for striking the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Ryan Gomes in the face, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President Basketball Operations. The incident occurred with 5:11 remaining in the third period of Portland’s 107-121 loss to the Wolves on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Target Center. Przybilla will serve the suspension tomorrow when the Blazers visit the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena, in Portland's 5th consecutive road game.

Blazers coach Nate McMillan wasn't too happy about being forced to play without Przybilla against the Warriors, even when the center is playing an average of 9.2 minutes, scoring 0.4 points per game; he was similarly dumfounded. “I'm very disappointed because there’s no appeal process. You can’t go to the judge or the jury. What it is, is what it is. Obviously, we understand the NBA’s position in not wanting things to escalate. To lose Joel is not good and, on top of it, for Love not to get suspended for a game makes no sense.”

McMillan has asked the league for clarification on the decision and, at this point, the team hasn’t received any. He also isn’t sure of the logic behind the suspension, comparing the situation to how a replay official in football interprets a challenged play. “Before I deal with Joel, I’m going to figure out what started it all. That’s my point. What led Joel to do what he did? What led Brandon to push back? How did it all start? The guy or persons who are responsible for viewing this, they don’t see it the way we see it.” That said, the Trail Blazers were left scratching their heads at the NBA’s decision to suspend the center. The incident began when Wolves forward Kevin Love shoved Brandon Roy without provocation, leading to Przybilla’s retaliation.

NBA executive vice president Stu Jackson announced the suspension and, according to the league’s release, Przybilla escalated the situation: “by running across the court, striking Love in the back of the head with his forearm, pushing Love in the back, and engaging with other Minnesota's players.” Blazers' center said he would do the exact same thing again, even knowing the repercussions. And he wasn’t surprised by the league’s ruling, alluding to past dealings with the franchise: “I had to do what I had to do to protect my teammate,” he said today at press conference after coach McMillan's words. “I’ve been with this organization long enough to know happens. It’s crazy, Love didn’t get any suspension or any fine.”

From today on, we will give you an in-depth report and add any new injuries every day and update status on old injuries. Chicago guard Larry Hughes and Utah forward Kyle Korver are now in the last part of their recovery and can play, but it's certain that coaches Vinny Del Negro and Jerry Sloan won't risk them next game. OKC still has two unplayable starters, Clippers' Marcus Camby will miss at least a month, and four players have recovered and available for their next team's match.

MONDAY'S BEST • Steve Nash, PHO
Phoenix's point guard may be a little tired today after scoring a career-high 46 points on 16-for-24 shooting in 39 action-packed minutes.

Bonus Tracks • Yao Ming, HOU; Manu Ginóbili, SAS
Yao Ming posted his second straight 20-10 game in Houston's 104-94 win at Oklahoma City while Ginóbili racked up his second 30-point night in a row in Spurs' 106-85 triumph against the Clippers. Ginóbili leads San Antonio in scoring with 24.4 points per game, against Tim Duncan's 20.4.

MONDAY'S WORST • Carlos Boozer, UTA
After a 29-point night at Philadelphia and a 19-11 game at Washington, tonight he shot 4-of-15 for only 11 points.

Bonus Tracks • Russell Westbrook, OKC; Al Thornton, LAC
OKC has played 6 games in eight days and is feeling exhaust. The team has lost all 6 matches by an average of 13.1 points with Westbrook playing 35.3 minutes per game. Come on, Scott Brooks, give him a break! Thornton played 35 minutes against San Antonio but only posted 8 points.
