New Jersey Nets 2K9 :: Game Recap

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Nets coach Lawrence Frank was blunt with his players about their poor first-half defensive effort against the Indiana Pacers.

The Nets responded by holding Indiana to twelve field goals in the second half in a 108-96 victory Saturday night.

"We need to be aggressive in everything we do defensively,'' Frank said. "We pointed out at halftime that we were not as aggressive as we need to be. That's why they shot better than us. Our guys took it upon themselves to kick it into another gear, and when you play with that type of defensive disposition, good things generally happen.''

The defense helped the Nets make up for a bit of an off night from Vince Carter. The swingman shot just 8-for-17 from the field, but made 2 of 3 free throws and scored 19 points for the Nets (4-1).

New Jersey shooting guard Jason Richardson again led the team, settling for 26 points, shooting 10-for-12 from the field and also five assists. Sixth man Jarvis Hayes had 13 points in 5-for-7, and Maurice Ager added 10 points in 5-for-6 for the Nets, but the key was the defensive effort. Indiana shot under 30 percent from the field in the second half as Danny Granger scored 20 points.

"It was outstanding, it was a good effort from us,'' Carter said. "Danny had 20, but we forced him into some tough shots, made it hard for everyone else on their team.'' New Jersey's Brook Lopez and Devin Harris and 10 points apiece Saturday.

The Nets led 31-27 at the end of the first quarter. New Jersey shot 53 percent in the first half but were down 55-54 at the break, thanks to a Hayes' 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left in the first half. The Pacers led 58-54 when Lopez couldn't quite gather himself on an alley-oop attempt. Indiana rebounded and pushed the ball down the floor, and Brandon Rush made a 3-pointer to give the Pacers a 61-51 lead (Rush scored 19 points in 7-for-13 from the floor). Granger then stole the ball from Bobby Simmons at the top of the key, drove and scored the layup to make it 63-51.

But then the Nets' show started thanks to a 21-4 run in the third quarter, to lead 72-67. New Jersey then started the fourth quarter on an 8-1 run in one minute, with all its points scored by Richardson, to take an 83-71 lead. "They turned up the intensity,'' Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said. "Our shots were poor. They beat us in all the main areas of the game, and our offensive efficiency really hurt us.''

Notes
  • New Jersey shot 47-for-71 from the field, 66%, scoring 68-of-108 points in the paint;
  • The Nets bench is a force to recognize after scoring 39 points;
  • Pacers had 10 offensive rebounds, resulting in 16 second chance points;
  • Nets posted 20 fast break points;
  • The teams combined for 29 3-pointers in the game.

Word has spread like wildfire throughout the league the past 24 hours that the New Jersey Nets, leading the Atlantic Division with a 4-1 record, are going to bet on Kenyon Martin one more time after acquiring Jason Richardson from Phoenix.

Martin was a member of the Nets roster that reached the NBA Finals in 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons. During the 2003-04 season, Denver Nuggets sent three first round draft picks to the Nets for Martin. Now the key number is 13.2; $13.2 million is Martin's salary over the next three years. Looks like New Jersey is going for a chance to be champions.

According to a report, New Jersey will trade Bobby Simmons and Stromile Swift to Denver for Martin and recently signed point guard Daniel Ewing.

Yeah, well, New Jersey needs a NBA Championship. :mrgreen: If we don't win it this year (why not?) and the luck is with us, imagine the starting 5 next season: Harris, Richardson, Carter, Martin and Boozer. :cheeky:

Nice win over the Pacers. I like the idea of K-mart coming back, hopefully his career gets a boost coming back to the place that made him get that $13m per year contract.

New Jersey Nets 2K9 :: Game Recap

(I don't really remember what I changed in the GIF options, but it looks better than before) :mrgreen:

MIAMI (AP) -- Devin Harris was mildly surprised midway through the final quarter to see the New Jersey Nets trailed by only 8. "We still had a chance,'' Harris said.

Harris scored 15 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and added 10 assists, as the Nets rallied to beat the Miami Heat 102-96 on Monday night to stay perfect on the road this season (3-0).The Nets improved to 5-1 overall on the season.

Jason Richardson scored 20 points and Vince Carter added 18 for the Heat, who scored 20 points thanks to fast breaks. Mario Chalmers led the way for Miami and was unstoppable, scoring a career-high 34 points. Miami led by 8 after Chalmers connected his 3-pointer - only one of 7 attempts - with 5:56 left, but got outscored 20-6 the rest of the way. "Sure, you feel confident,'' Michael Beasley said, "but you can never count them out when players like Jason or Vince are on the court.'' Beasley had 21 points for the Heat.

Dwyane Wade's layup with 55.2 seconds left drew Miami within three, but Carter calmly made a 15-footer from the right side a couple of seconds later and the Nets held on from there. Down by three, Miami had one more chance, but Chalmers was called from traveling and the outcome was sealed. "We built a nice lead but couldn't get the job done,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

New Jersey re-acquired forward Kenyon Martin yesterday from the Denver Nuggets, which got Bobby Simmons and Stromile Swift in exchange. In his first game back with the Nets, Martin wrapped up a good debut with 19 points and 6 rebounds. "I think that playing for this team is special for Kenyon,'' Nets head coach Lawrence Frank said. "I think it ignited him."

Harris and Richardson each made 8-of-11 field goals for New Jersey. Harris' newly found long-range game fueled a quick 6-0 burst by the Nets with 3:31 left in the third. Then Richardson scored eight straight points in a 80-second span in the Nets 20-6 run that finished the game, starting with his only 3-pointer.

Notes
  • Both teams shot over 56% from the field;
  • Miami only scored 1-of-15 treys;
  • Heat had 13 turnovers;
  • Both teams scored over 64 points on the paint.
