Hey Guys

Postby luciano_davidwesley on Wed Apr 23, 2003 3:29 pm

I'm a guy thats owned live 2003 on my PC for a few months and I was wondering how you work out which players are going to improve and which are going to be "busts". Is there a way you can find out what their potential for improvement is? Thanks (BTW I play with NO Hornets mainly so if you could post the names of players on that roster with the most potential it would be greatly appreciated!

It is possible to view their potential. But you need to have the right program to view the database. You can either use the a DBF editor like the DB commander from www.dbcommander.com or you can use the userfriendly version, the NBA Live Toolkit which you can get from this site.

Well, since you're Australian and i'm feeling nice tonight i looked up your Hornets' (default EA Hornets team) career potentials for you. :)

The Career potential (also known as CAREERPKG in the databases) chart goes from A to H...A being the best chance of having a good career, H being the worst chance....it's all based on chance. In a franchise, a players' CAREERPKG might change the next year... e.g. so PJ Brown might be E this year, then F the next.

J. Magloire = D ...(about average potential...could go any way...will have a steady career...note: players like Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter have this same CAREERPKG, meaning the career is at its peak.)
PJ Brown = E ...(Past his prime...his career is on its way down)
J. Masburn = D
D. Wesley = E
B. Davis = C (Above average...will probably improve...slightly.)
G. Lynch = D
S. Augmon = D
C. Alexander = E
L. Nailon = E
K. Haston = D
B. Drew = H (His career can only get shitter...he's going down.)
M. Bullard = H
J. Moiso = F (he's on his way down...but he's young so he might change.)
R. Traylor = E.

thankyou!

The hornets apprear to have low potential, explaning why a lot of my team seem to go down in ratings after the first yearof franchise.

Thanks a lot!

Seeing this thread makes me think the ability to view potential in Franchise Mode (within the game) might be a good idea...another idea that comes along too late for the Wishlist. :?

i also think that's a good addition (potential rating). in their nhl game the potential rating can be seen. but i wonder why in nba live the ratings after the first year of the franchise the following year would have small difference like 81 1st yr, 82 2nd yr. :?:

not all the time.... plus if u simulate then no matter the rating ur player will still score rupgly the same. thats one of the things i hate about this game... in the nba2001 u could have a player whou wold satrt off as maybe 12ppg then 15 then 18 then 22 etc.. here if a player avreges about 22 in rookie thats what he will avrage though out his carreer, aprox...

i think it would be beter if rating were to change during the season, depends on how the player feels, if he just came form injury....
i know thins should go in to wishlist, but while im on the topic... i think they should have kinda like ask the player to do things.... where u as a GM or coach will ask a player to shoot more, to rebound more, to pass more, and other CPU teams know about it, so if the player doesnt do it u can trade him, but it would be hard coz the NBA teasm knows that this player is stubborn or somethinglike that.... coz there are player who ae like 87 and get 11ppg at 32min!!

It does seem like that's what always happens, but some players will increase more significantly. I'd like to see player development be less random before players go up too much. Even though that would be fairly realistic - some players do break out in their second year, or show improvement from college during their rookie year - if it were too random, then it wouldn't be realistic (eg. a player with great potential that sat on the bench most of his rookie season, who goes from 78 to 90).

Apparently NBA2K3 has this feature, with a player's ratings increasing and decreasing as they slump or go on a hot streak. The problem with that would be trading. Live calculates the fairness of the trades by the overall rating, so it would probably make a lot of trades impossible. In a way that's realistic, since a slumping player isn't an attractive trade commodity, but it might also mean a good bench player who isn't getting enough minutes on your team would decline, even though he'd be thriving elsewhere.

So I suggest if this feature makes its way into NBA Live 2004, that it either be perfected to accomodate transactions, or be an option that can be toggled in case it doesn't work out for everyone.
