Line-Ups That Could've Been...?

Postby EGarrett on Mon Nov 10, 2003 8:49 am

Sometimes...when we put on our perfect 20/20 hindsight glasses we see trades that teams should've made...but it's also fun to look at line-up's that MIGHT have existed if the team's GM had been patient instead of making a deal. Obviously draft picks may have been different if team's missed certain deals...but this is just a rough approximation of how the team would look if you undid a key deal.

Orlando

C Ben Wallace
PF Juwan Howard
SF Pat Garrity
SG Tracy McGrady
PG Chucky Atkins
_________________
PF Drew Gooden
SG Gordan Giricek
C Andrew Declerq
PG Tyronn Lue

Orlando's major problem the last few years has been a lack of defense and rebounding. Isn't it ironic that they had arguably the best defender and rebounder in the league and traded him before they realized the role he could play and how good he could be? This team would be a serious contender in the East.

Houston

C Yao Ming
PF Maurice Taylor
SF Richard Jefferson
SG Cuttino Mobley
PG Steve Francis
________________
C Jason Collins
SF Jim Jackson
PG Moochie Norris
SG Eric Piatkowski
C Kelvin Cato
SF Bostjan Nachbar

You're looking at the deepest team in the league. They don't gain the toughness they need at the four next to Yao...but Jefferson is just the kind of defensive, athletic small forward they've been looking for. The subtraction of Eddie Griffin (that EG wannabe) would probably help chemistry somewhat too.

Cleveland

C Z. Ilgauskas
PF Carlos Boozer
SF Lebron James
SG Ricky Davis
PG Andre Miller
______________
SG Dajuan Wagner
C Desagana Diop
PF Chris Mihm
PG J.R. Bremer
SF Jason Kapono

The only thing this team is missing is outside shooting. Miller is the defensive, playmaking point guard that the team lacks. There might be some friction with James being an excellent playmaker also...but he could get used to his future role of Small Forward. Either way...this is an easy playoff team, and with some shooters they could be contenders.

New York

C Nene Hilario
PF Marcus Camby
SF Latrell Sprewell
SG Allan Houston
PG Charlie Ward

PF Kurt Thomas
PG Howard Eisley
SG Shandon Anderson

For these poor schmoes I'm undoing two deals. Spree will still have to play small forward...but suddenly they don't have problems with size and shotblocking upfront. This is a really solid team.

Thoughts? Other Line-Ups that could've been?

This thread is stupid. Keeping one player would have completely affected the salary caps and draft positions of these teams thus completely altering their teams.

no order by positions but philly could have had a roster filled with a load of potential at least if they could have kept some players around.

stackhouse
ai
larry hughes
joe smith
tim thomas
coleman
bradley(shot blocking at least)
clarence weatherspoon
snow
speedy
kenny thomas
marc jackson
glen robinson
jimmy jackson
the bench could have been a strength for them.

Mavs.

Mourning
Nowitzki
Walker
Finley
J. Kidd
-------------
Nash
Jamison
T. Best
Najera
Bradley

Besides that, I agree with TheBob. There if they signed Kidd, they wouldn't have had enough to get Mourning.

Raptors

Camby
A. Davis (I kind of want to undo this and go with Bender off the bench and Bosh starting)
McGrady
VC
Stoudamire

Bosh
Mo-Pete

Any team with 'Vancouver' in the name had Stu Jackson not been an idiot.

The Sixers of the 80's:

C - Moses Malone
PF - Charles Barkley
SF - Julius Earving
SG- Andrew Toney
PG - John Stockton

Bench - Mo Cheeks

That's all the players I can remember for that team right now.

I was just about to say the Sixers couldn't have acquired Stockton and Barkley, but I know that you know your NBA history, so I checked and discovered the Sixers held the 10th pick too - I wasn't aware of that. It's amazing that Stock fell so low (16th), as did the Mailman (13th) the following year. Then again, a lot of the greats seem to have been underrated when they were drafted (Willis Reed being taken in the second round comes to mind).

I think that would've been a lottery team. Francis didn't come til the 99-2000 season though. By then Olajuwon only lasted 44 games at 10 points and 6 rebounds per...and Barkley broke down like an old Chevy after 20. Drexler also couldn't have been there because he retired in '98.

That's the first answer to your question.

2nd, Mourning was planning to join the Mavs before the Nets offered him to stay in the East so he could still be the best center of the Conf.

Hopefully no mods come to me telling me I'm starting a flame with those who doesn't read the subject of the threads before posting.

Actually the point of the thread was to undo one key trade from the past few years with a team. People don't really read much beyond subject lines though nowadays...but to each his own I guess. I have no idea why Yohance decided to spam the thread...
