Suns acquire big man Jahidi White

Postby Full Surface on Sat Nov 08, 2003 5:58 am

In this deal, the Wizards trade Jahidi White to the Suns in return for Brevin Knight. I really think this is a good trade for the Suns. He can take off some pressure from Amare. He's one of the few that actually has the strength to guard Shaq and now that he's in the West, it'll be interesting to see these two teams play.

Wed., Nov. 5 Phoenix trades Brevin Knight to Washington for Jahidi White

This goes to an earlier comment I made during this parade of insults called a thread.

I wanted Boston to trade Tony Battie for Brevin Knight, I was yelling at Danny Ainge last night through the TV during the Pistons/Celtics game,
I guess he didn't hear me, or just didn't like the idea of freeing a roster proteced spot for the expansion draft and six million dollars in cap space.

They already have Mark Blount, Raef LaFrentz and Vin Baker playing the post positions!!!

Dammit Ainge!!

Boston's guard positions are their most suspect with no time as a starter for either Mike James or Marcus Banks, the style Boston is playing is up tempo and needs solid ballhandlers.

I really can't think Phoenix would rather Jahidi White over Tony Battie, but I could be wrong.

disappointing for brevin knight. he will get no opportunities in washington. i swear if he got the minutes some of the pg's in the nba were getting, he'd be top 4 pg fo' sho'

Brevin Knight can do many things on the court, such as defend and pass the ball very well, but he can not shoot the ball, he lacks size and has aged some.

Knight has received minutes in the past and teams took advantage of him.
His complete lack of shooting leaves teams off him and they double the other players. I have heard that Knight can't hit from outside 18 feet.

I still wanted the Celtics to take him for his contract is running out, also Boston could use some more ballhanding and on the ball defense.

I watched Boston lose to New Jersey, but it was a growing process for Kedrick Brown and Marcus Banks, both having their best pro games.
After seeing Marcus Banks play very well against Jason Kidd, I have backed off a bit on Ainge not trading for Knight, but freeing up the money would have been nice.

First three years in Cleveland, Knight received lots of playing time and did okay, but the scoring is suspect and no three or long range to speak of.

^^ i can't click there for more info

brevin knight is a real point guard. he looks for his team-mates first - something that seems like a lost art among todays so called 'star' point guards. i'd rather have knight as my point guard (if he can still play like he played in his cleveland years which nobody can predict because of the bullshit game time he receives) rather than stars like steve francis, steve nash, sam cassell, stephon marbury. reason being is because he does what a point guard should do, and he has proven that he can do it better than anyone in todays league, given the opportunity, besides jason kidd and gary payton.

Jahidi made his debut as a sun and he had 13 points and 5 rebounds in 26 minutes!

brevin can definitely hit from beyond 18 feet, and he is actually a good shooter but it does take him more attempts to get his shot going. the more shots he takes his percentage usually starts to get higher but from junior high school he was never really required to shoot from outside because he was so good at penetrating and dishing or finishing. and he was always more focused on getting the ball to other players for easy shots than on scoring since he could penetrate well, so he never really had the mindset that he would take the shot if open and i think that did hurt him because it limited his shooting in terms of getting into a rhythym.

some of his shooting problems could also be from the added bulk to his arms and shoulders, he's always been a small guy with great flexibility but when he got to college he put on the bulk he has now and that is a huge difference in size from where he was. you could tell from looking at him move his arms and shoulders that he didn't have the same flexibility he did before, which really isn't a huge factor in affecting his shot but it may have altered the way he releases the ball now. but he can shoot, and quite well, maybe he concentrates better when playing in a pickup game because he looks to score more then, but i've seen him nail jumpers from long range all over the court. even last year at memphis when jwill was hurt and brev started, from checking the boxscores his shooting percentage was higher when he attempted more shots.

i wouldn't say he'd be a top 4 pg now because for some reason he seems more content to just play his role on the team which the last few years has been backup, but if he really wanted it and played more of his game he would be one of the best in the game. i haven't really seen him play the way he can since his days in cleveland, but i think all the injuries may have caused him to play more cautious now. he has a lot of heart but he plays more conservative than he used to. he still seems to get respect for his stealing ability but he used to be able to disrupt teams offenses with his defence, i guess he's still a good defender but would probably be even better if he was starting.

i hope he catches on with charlotte next year and gets another chance to start, he is good enough to start in the nba and from playing with him he can get a player some really easy shots, but as a backup i don't think he is as creative as he would be as a starter. he would have been a good fit in boston i think. his father signed a contract to play there then he tore up his knee and didn't make it back.

top 5 point guards in the NBA:
1. J.Kidd
2. G.Payton
3. S.Nash
4. S.Cassell
5. S.Marbury

i made a mistake saying he would be top 4, as i was talking as if john stockton was still playing. brevin knight would be top 3 point guard in the NBA today (behind jason kidd, and gary payton) if he was given the opportunity, and if he could still play like he played in '00.

you mentioned stephon marbury, baron davis, and steve francis. out of these players, francis led them with 41mpg so i am going to compare each player as if they all played 41mpg.

B.Knight(season '00)-14p, 4.5r, 10.7a, 2.5s, .49b, 3.67t

S.Marbury-22.8p, 3.3r, 8.3a, 1.37s, .25b, 3.33t

B.Davis-18.6p, 4r, 6.9a, 1.97s, .48b, 3.04t

S.Francis-21p, 6.2r, 6.2a, 1.74s, .51b, 3.69t

result: brevin knight = better

Funny, at 41 mpg, I would still pick any of those three over Knight. :)
