Van Horn and A. McKie

The same happened when the hornets trade lee nailon and mashburn to philadelphia for glen robinson a couple of seasons ago. None of the three palyers played in his new teams.

It wasn't Lee Nailon, it was Rodney Buford.
Mashburn never played because he has a medical condition, something about vertigo or something related. He's a really good player but unfortunately that condition kept him from playing. If you see his last 20 games with the Hornets he was still making 20ppg.

I would agree, if by "really good" you mean "really average." He was never really much more than that, especially considering his complete lack of defense.

Maybe I should have said "really good offensive player".

They are just gonna get their paycheck for warming the bench, bringin donuts and carry other players stuff around.

They've already served their purpose by helping blockbusters work under the cap. In fact, I'd go so far as to say Aaron McKie has helped the Lakers more this season than he did in the two years he was on their roster.

I saw a list of players that NBA teams own the rights to and it was quite interesting. I know the Timberwolves could still sign and trade Sprewell, Oliver Miller and Sam Mitchell (not sure how that would though since he is a coach). There were a lot of interesting names on there though.

It is a pretty big loophole you think the league would want to address though. It's basically teams sticking it in the face of the the whole salary structure/CBA, don't ya think?

It kind of seems like it in a way, but they're still following the same rules and restrictions as with a convential sign-and-trade in the offseason so it's not really a loophole per se. I think the rule that a player must report to his new team and maintain a presence is an attempt to discourage teams from abusing their ability to do it. If Van Horn refused to go along with that then the Kidd deal likely would have broken down again.

But McKie MIGHT be able to mentor young point guards like Mike Conley so at least he's still doing something..

McKie's not really a point guard, though he has played at that position at times during his career.

Before McKie got traded, he was acting as an "unofficial assistant coach" for the 76ers. He has a lot of basketball knowledge so he will be of value in that regard. You are right about that. However, I did hear that both he and the 76ers hope for him to return back to Philadelphia as soon as possible.

Van Horn Still An Option For Nets?

It's interesting that the NBA is claiming there's no required length of time he has to remain with the Nets when it was previously reported he'd be required to "maintain a presence" for the deal to be done. Presumably that means he could be waived right now or told he can stay home so perhaps he is planning on making an appearance again, unless these workouts are just a formality.

According to a note at the bottom of this article under the Rumour Mill, the NBA is expected to change the rules to prevent semi-retired players from being signed and traded.

As benji said, Yinka Dare isn't exactly an option but if the loophole remains, a few of the veterans on this list could conceivably used in the same way.

Lol, Charles Oakley, Schrempf and Danny Manning are still on the list.

Even if they don't do anything about the loophole, I doubt we'll see those any of those players included in sign-and-trade deals. Of course, before the season Charles Oakley was talking comeback so perhaps we'll see him back in the league a la Kevin Willis last year.

Actually the "retired" player one is a very specific loophole. TrueHoop posted the list of players it applies to a while back.

On the RealGM page, it's the players who still have a team listed next to them. So, Oakley wouldn't be one of them.

Van Horn never filed retirement paperwork with the league, he simply had decided to not go after a new contract with a team for a while. I will never understand peoples visceral hatred for the guy.
