Offensive or Defensive?
Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:22 am
both, there shouldnt be a rule to how long you can be in the paint
Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:34 am
But if those rules didn't exist, teams could just park a seven footer under the basket for the entire duration of the shot clock. If nothing else, the challenge of any sport is to achieve a certain aim while adhering to certain rules and conditions.

Agreed. Shaq would average 60 ppg, and console basketball games would be no fun.

1. East All-Star jerseys
2. West All-Star jerseys
3. Gasol for Kwame

1. Stupid trades- Shaq for Marion. I know shaqs gonna be relegated to a roleplaying position. I also know that Marion wanted out. But the athleticism when you're shaqs age and size just isnt gonna fit Phoenix. As for Kwame and Gasol...Gasol wanted out i realize this, but kwame? When even MJ admits he was wrong: you know you suck.
2. Rumor Centrals of any way shape or form- I could not give less of a fuck about what may happen unless the ink is on the paper and the only thing that may happen is the two traded players planes crash into each other as they switch teams.
3. People letting constantly injured players slide just because they were good at one time-this really bothers me, if you only play 30-50 games of an 82 season, your numbers are gonna be unrealistic. I know elite athletes are hard on the body and if i got smacked by a 320 pound 7'6 center i'd tear or sprain something also, but when its every other game? theres something else wrong. Re evaluate your training staff/coaching staff and figure out why everyones so damn injured.

Which explains Bill Russel and Wilt's stats. Don't tell them that though...cause they swore in the 90's that if they still played they would dominate today's players. Getting old, senile and jaded is fun...i look forward to it like I look forward to death.
Sat Feb 09, 2008 6:47 am
oh thats it, you crossed the line, no one talks about russell in such a way.......
Sat Feb 09, 2008 8:14 am
if Ben Wallace could have been an All-Star & DPOY all those years as an undersized centre, there is no doubt Bill Russell would've been in same boat, but been a helluva lot better....
Wilt, he wouldn't have dominated likes of Shaq, Hakeem etc but he would've been at least up to their level....
but I guess it's different generations....those players didn't have the all the weights, recovery procedures, new age training procedures & all that....I guess it's like any idiot saying that McHale wouldn't dominate because he's so piss weak....yeah right

Really? I mean, I get where you're coming from because there's a lot of rumours that are merely speculation and never go anywhere but I find them interesting nevertheless. They're something for the sports fan to talk about, if nothing else.

Have you seen Russel's physique vs. Ben Wallace? Russel was once asked about 7 years ago what he stats would be if he played today and he said he'd average about 20 rebounds and 40 ppg. The female interviewer paused for a couple seconds before she went on to the next question.
Sat Feb 09, 2008 12:30 pm
thing is, when we compare old players to the players of now people always say "if so and so played now". no one ever says "if so and so played back then". people take the older players and bring them to the here and now without taking into consideration the difference in growing up in the game. for instance, alot of these players would not be anywhere near the size they are now back then. the equipment today, the vitimans, everything, its just better now. if wilt and russell grew up in this they would be bigger.

obviously he's fooling himself if he thinks he could get 40ppg....he was never much of an offensive force....I didn't see interview, so don't know if he was just being witty or serious, but obviously him averaging 40ppg is ridiculous....

The problem is the players see it too and turn them into whining little emo kids like back in Middle school when they were picked last in the pickup game after lunch. These guys are professionals and should act like it but thats not human nature. It just causes more detriments to team chemistry than there already is.

1. Yao Ming getting hacked and dragged with no fouls
2. Knicks i duno wtf they are doing

Come one man, both of those trades were GREAT for the league. We get to see an unbelievable Western playoffs from round 1, and we get to see Shaq vs. Kobe again.

I hope the Suns and Lakers never meet in the playoffs, just so we don't have to hear it condensed down into "KOBE VS SHAQ OMFG REAL LAKER TITLE WINNER WILL BE DECIDED FINALLY"

Sure there would be a lot of crap coming out of the media, but that would be some serious quality entertainment.

I could see him averaging around 20 rpg in the modern era, in the 90s if not today. Dennis Rodman averaged 18 rpg circa 1992 while generously being listed at 6'8", so it's not unreasonable to think that with Russell's smarts he could average a similar number. 40 ppg is a lofty suggestion though, not necessarily because of his offensive abilities but rather that it would be highly unlikely he'd get the opportunity to score 40 ppg in today's NBA.

I agree there's been several examples of that happening in recent times but on the whole I'd say that's a bit of a generalisation. Kevin Garnett is a good example of a player whose name came up in trade rumours pretty much every offseason for a few years without it causing him a mental breakdown or decline in his play.

Dennis Rodman is the greatest rebounder in NBA history. Russell never rebounded as well as Rodman did. At Rodman's best, in 1994-95, he averaged 18.9 rebounds per 36 minutes. At 45 minutes a game (Russell numbers) he would get 23.6 rebounds per game.
But Russell would never play more than 40 minutes a game due to today's culture.
Hollinger places Russell's peak at around 21-22% of rebounds. Wallace had a 23% year (same as what Hollinger places Russell's peak season at) in 2002-03. Wallace pulled down 15.4 rebounds per game at 39.3 minutes per game.
Russell averaging 20 boards a game? Very unlikely. 15 would be a lot easier to swallow.
Sun Feb 10, 2008 2:05 pm
Wilt spouted the same kind of mess before he died and said that he could average about 40 - 50 ppg in the 90's. I'll look up some of these quotes.
Mon Feb 11, 2008 12:09 am
1. the situation in NY except for Crawford, Lee and Robinson (and sometimes Randolph)
2. the Knicks' inability to win: they are either down by whatever and lose...or they play well and lead by 10 or even 20. And still lose due to a really bad performance in the 4th quarter.
3. salary cap in NY, horrible contracts...no hope in sight. I want to see a real center on the team, back to Ewing-times. The Knicks should have D. Howard on the team.
