Your favourite teams from time past

Postby The X on Mon Jan 28, 2008 10:38 pm

I was just thinking back to the past at some lineups that teams fielded that I enjoyed watching. They are as follows:

LA Lakers (circa 1994-95)

C- Vlade Divac
PF- Elden Campbell
SF- Cedric Ceballos (All-Star)
SG- Eddie Jones
PG- Nick Van Exel
6th- Anthony Peeler

I really enjoyed the Lake Show or whatever they called them....they brought Showtime back into the Forum....I loved that team....unfortunately it all fell apart when Magic came out of retirement the following year, then West signed Shaq, traded Divac for draft rights to Kobe & dealt Ceballos for Horry....I haven't had a favourite team since

Sacramento Kings (circa 1995-96)
C- Olden Polynice
PF- Brian Grant
SF- Walt Williams
SG- Mitch Richmond (All-Star)
PG- Tyus Edney
6th- Michael Smith

I always liked the underdog & this team was definitely one. Was a big fan of Grant, Rock, The Wizard & Ty Edney. Unfortunately Grant would go to Portland & never be as durable.

Utah Jazz (circa 1996-97)
C- Greg Ostertag
PF- Karl Malone (All-Star)
SF- Byron Russell
SG- Jeff Hornacek
PG- John Stockton (All-Star)
6th- Shandon Anderson/Antoine Carr

This was the year that the Jazz finally broke through in the West behind John Stockton's cold hearted, clutch antics against the Rockets. They should've won the title either that season or the next, but Malone wasn't as clutch as MJ & Pip unfortunately.

Boston Celtics (circa 1997-98)
C- Andrew DeClercq
PF- Antoine Walker (All-Star)
SF- Walter McCarty
SG- Ron Mercer
PG- Chauncey Billups
6th- Dana Barros

Whilst this team was pretty cruddy, Pitino still willed them to a 36-46 record overall. They were fun to watch & pressed all game long. Played more of a college style game, that's probably why Pitino didn't last long in the NBA.

Sacramento Kings (circa 2000-01)
C- Vlade Divac (All-Star)
PF- Chris Webber (All-Star)
SF- Peja Stojakovic
SG- Doug Christie
PG- Jason Williams
6th- Bobby Jackson

Just fun to watch. They would take the step to elite the following year once they traded away White Chocolate for Mike Bibby, but I liked this team more.

I also didn't mind the following 2 teams too:

Dallas Mavericks (circa 2002-03)
C- Shawn Bradley/Raef LaFrentz
PF- Dirk Nowitzki (All-Star)
SF- Michael Finley
SG- Adrian Griffin/Raja Bell
PG- Steve Nash (All-Star)
6th- Nick Van Exel

You gotta love the Big 3 in Dallas. This team made it all the way to the Conference Finals, but unfortunately ran into the Spurs who they battled to 6 games, before folding as the Spurs went on to win the title. After a 1st Round exit the following season, Nash & Fins were sent on their way.

Miami Heat (circa 2003-04)
C- Brian Grant
PF- Lamar Odom
SF- Caron Butler
SG- Eddie Jones
PG- Dwayne Wade
6th- Rafer Alston/Udonis Haslem

Made nice playoff run behind rookie PG Dwayne Wade. This would be the last we would see of them as they were dismantled the subsequent off-season.

Post some of your favourite teams that you have watched. Interested to see them & the reasons why.

That Lakers team you listed is my favourite of all time, I'll let others take the cool ones like Run-TMC etc but others for me would be...

00/01 Milwaukee Bucks

C - Scott Williams
PF - Mark Pope
SF - Glenn Robinson
SG - Ray Allen
PG - Sam Cassell
6th - Tim Thomas

Finished 52-30, any team with the Cassalien and Glenn Robinson is always good value. Also kicked ass in NBA Live.

99/00 Charlotte Hornets

C - Elden Campbell
PF - Derrick Coleman
SF - Anthony Mason
SG - Eddie Jones
PG - David Wesley

Bench:

Baron Davis
Brad Miller
Eddie Robinson
Ricky Davis
Dale Ellis

Bobby Phills was also on the team.

94/95 Charlotte Hornets

C - Alonzo Mourning
PF - Larry Johnson
SF - Hersey Hawkins
SG - Scott Burrell
PG - Mugsey Bogues

6th - Dell Curry

Robert Parish was on the team aswell. I loved watching the Hornets in the LJ/Mourning era.

97/98 Atlanta Hawks

C - Dikembe Mutombo
PF - Christian Laettner
SF - Tyrone Corbin
SG - Steve Smith
PG - Mookie Blaylock

6th - Alan Henderson

Do you want to sex Mutombo? Yes I do. Honourable mention to the 93/94 Nuggets aswell, Abdul-Rauf, Ellis, Rodney Rogers... Darnell Mee.

93/94 Washington Bullets

C - Kevin Duckworth
PF - Tom Gugliotta
SF - Don MacLean
SG - Rex Chapman
PG - Michael Adams

6th - Pervis Ellison

Also featured Calbert Cheaney and Brent Price. Might possibly have been the tallest team in the history of the NBA, during the season at one point or another they had Kevin Duckworth (7'0), Tom Gugliotta (6'10), Don MacLean (6'10), Gheorghe Mursean (7'7), Manute Bol (7'6), Marty Conlon (6'10) and Tito Horford (7'1) on the team. How awesome is that? Plus they employed Andrew Gaze, argument over.

Bulls from the early/mid 90's would have my vote, but that's an easy one.

Sonics from '96 were one of my favorite teams too. I've always been a huge Kemp/Payton/Schrempf fan.

Jae, I also liked that Bucks' team with, Alien, Jesus & Big Dog, as well as Hornets' team with Glen Rice when he went bananas that one year & they kept talking about his hot wife....I didn't mind that Hawks team either with Smitty & the Nuggets Cinderella team with Robert Pack, although I preferred the Kings team that year....

Amazingly explosive, high-flying, Prime VC's Raps

Iverson's Sixers (especially '01)

Kobe/Shaq Lakers

'04 Pistons that picked them apart

MJ/Pip/Rodman Bulls

'00 Blazers with Sheed, Pippen, etc.

Suns team lead by Kidd, McDyess, Kevin Johnson

Sixers '01

Iverson surrounded by role players that could play D, only if they had a 3 point shooter

Like what Jae said RUN TMC

Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullen I don't know why they broke them up

I'm partial to the Bulls teams of the 90s, perhaps moreso the core group of the second threepeat but that one's fairly self-explanatory. I'd agree with the other noteworthy teams from the 90s that have been posted such as the Mourning/LJ Hornets, the 1996 Sonics and probably the Lakers from around the same time as well.

A couple more:

Houston Rockets circa 1996/1997

C: Hakeem Olajuwon
F: Charles Barkley
F: Mario Elie
G: Clyde Drexler
G: Matt Maloney

Bench:

Eddie Johnson
Kevin Willis

Orlando Magic, late Shaq era

C: Shaquille O'Neal
F: Horace Grant
F: Dennis Scott
G: Nick Anderson
G: Anfernee Hardaway

Same with me. That was the first NBA season I watched, and being originally from Oregon, rooted for them so hard. Fucking Lakers.

96-98 Bulls were my favorite team of all time

mid 90's Orlando with Shaq, Penny is marked in my memory, they were my first NBA memories from when I was 9, 10 yrs old

for some reason I like the 97-98 Suns with Kidd, Dice, Chapman, KJ, Ceballos, young Steve Nash, ... They went 56-26 but lost in the first round of the playoffs against the Spurs with rookie Tim Duncan.

I liked that team too....probably because Ceballos was my fav player, but also because I liked this young guy named Nash, & I also like Kidd, Dice & Chapman....they just played a good brand of basketball....

They're not one of my favourites per se but a team worth mentioning would be the Clippers squad in 2002/2003 that featured Brand, Odom, Maggette, Miller, Richardson, Olowokandi and Wilcox. Obviously Kandi didn't exactly establish himself as a top ten centre, Wilcox was a few years away from becoming a consistently productive player and there were some injuries all around but it was a lineup that seemed to have a lot of potential that was ultimately never realised.

Also one of those teams that was good to use in NBA Live if you wanted to blow everything up with a series of blockbuster moves.

Hello all, I'm new to the forum.

The first NBA season I watched was '94/'95, and that Lakers team was one of my favorites. Another one of my favorites that season was the Kings, trying to scrap their way into the playoffs. Take Tyus Edney off the '95/'96 squad and add Spud Webb.

A few more of my favorite teams are the '97/'98 Lakers:

C - Shaquille O'Neal
PF - Robert Horry
SF - Rick Fox
SG - Eddie Jones
PG - Nick Van Exel
Bench- Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher, Elden Campbell

The '93/'94 New York Knicks:

C - Patrick Ewing
PF - Charles Oakley
SF - Charles Smith
SG - John Starks
PG - Derek Harper
Bench - Anthony Mason, Greg Anthony, Hubert Davis

The Blazers of the early 90s:

C - Kevin Duckworth
PF - Buck Williams
SF - Jerome Kersey
SG - Clyde Drexler
PG - Terry Porter

The '04/'05 Phoenix Suns:

C - Amare Stoudemire
PF - Shawn Marion
SF - Quentin Richardson
SG - Joe Johnson
PG - Steve Nash

I also have a fascination with the '90/'91 Denver Nuggets, who gave up a league-record 130 points per game:

C - Blair Rasmussen
PF - Joe Wolf
SF - Orlando Woolridge
SG - Reggie Williams
PG - Michael Adams

I'll exclude my obvious favorites (Jordan's Bulls, Bird's Celtics, Sixers).

Any of Miller's Pacers with the Davis brothers, Smits, Mark "Action" Jackson, and McKey.

Van Gundy's Knicks with Sprewell, Ewing, Camby, Larry Johnson, Allan Houston, Charlie Ward, and Chris Childs.

Charlotte Hornets with Mashburn, Baron Davis, P.J. Brown, and Davis Wesley.
