If more surgery needed, Hill will retire

Apparently Hill hopes to play in the 2003/2004 season, February being the earliest he could suit up for the Magic. However, if further surgery is required, it seems Hill will be ready to call it a day.

It's been said before but I'll say it again: it's a shame it had to turn out this way. Grant Hill was supposed to be up there with the Kobes and T-Macs, one of the superstars of the current era. Even if he returns, I doubt he'll ever come close to the level he was approaching before the injury, or even the level he was once at.

I hope that Hill can return, and be that second fiddle that is crucial to a team's success.

It's sad that he can't compete with the big guns anymore due to his injuries. I wouldn't mind seeing him in one more season.

This is very disappointing (for the fourth time). Had he not hurt his ankle, Grant Hill would probably have been the best player in the NBA today. His last season with Detroit in 99-00 was probably his best one with respect to his individual numbers (He averaged a career high 25.8 ppg that season). Makes you wonder just how much better he could have been.

Whats worst is I know there are a lot of young kids that wonder why the hell Grant Hill tries to comeback because he sucks anyway...Little do they know that he was once one of the best players and the league and if he was at full strenth along with T-Mac, they would have a couple of championships...Eastern Conference championships at least.

very, very dissapointing. grant hill would've been great, there is no doubt, the mind reels at what the nba has lost because in hill was the type of player with the type of truly unique skills that future players try to model.

he was also probably the best one on one player of his era during his prime

i am not ruling out that he can be as good as he was, but it is dissapointing that he missed those years. the reason i am not ruling it out is because he seems to me to be a fighter and of strong character, and nothing is impossible when the stuff youre made of is as tough as his.

I don't think Grant will ever be as good as he used to be. Even if his ankle completly heals, he has still lost some athleticism due to age and his game hasn't grown as it would have had he continued to play. But he could still be a good second option and be a Scottie Pippen type player on the offensive end, and be a decent defender.

At the time most people expected Hill to be "the man" and T-Mac to be "the sidekick", but it didn't turn out that way. Instead, T-Mac's been "The Lone Ranger".

itz too bad that Hill is not the way he was...if he was the all star in Detroit maybe the Magic could go to the finals...then again didn't Tracy McGrady want his own team?then y did he sign with a team that has Hill in 2000?he coulda just went to Denver or Vancouver/Memphis

I don't think Denver or Vancouver (they were still in Canada in 2000) had money to spend. Chicago did, but T-Mac turned down their offer.

Once Hill is ready to return (let's assume that he will), maybe it would be wise to bring him off the bench, or least limit him to about half a game, until they're sure he's ready? Last season's strategy of having him play around 30 minutes from day one, sometimes only playing 10 minutes and sitting out a game every so often seemed alright at first, but eventually he wasn't just sitting out a game every so often - he was out for the rest of the year.

I attended a Pistons game live in 96 or so I think. Afterwards we met him by the locker rooms (we have connections)...he was very friendly. Afterwards he went across the way and stood making jokes with a friend.
I also remember when we left that he was surrounded by about 12-15 people all asking for autographs and what-not as soon as he came out of the locker room and from all the way to to the team bus.

(As a side note...Allan Houston was standing next to us the whole time we were watching Grant Hill but he was still pretty new in the league so no one gave a crap...including us)

I watched him play in person in his last season in Detroit. The Jazz were playing the Pistons in the Palace during the 99-00 season. I had great seats for the game, fifth or sixth row. I was sitting next to Mikki Moore's mother and sister and talked to them during halftime. I still remember seeing Karl Malone and John Stockton, my two favorite players, in person and that was a real treat. Malone looks a lot bigger in person than you'd think after watching him on tv. Anyways, the Jazz won the game 107-94 with Malone dominating the Pistons with 31 points and 13 rebounds. During the fourth quarter, when the game was a blowout, Malone and Bryon Russell beat up the Pistons mascot. Russell grabbed the mascot from behind and Malone used him as his personal punching bag for a few minutes. It was really a lot of fun. haven't attended any games where grant hill was playing, but saw a bunch of live telecasts on tnt and whenever they played the bulls.

i remember hill would always be a tough guard whenever the pistons played the bulls. mj and pip normally weren't able to contain the former dukie. he'd fill up the scoring board by using his quick first step to set up various moves and plus grab 7rebs + dish out 7 assists

I don't know about that. I don't think anyone has seen more Piston games than I have if by seeing we mean on tv and not in person. I've watched every Piston game that was televised on local tv for past six years and that includes the year when Detroit was terrible and Stack averaged 29ppg. And the games that weren't televised, I usually listened to on radio.
