Missing Pieces

Mon Jul 16, 2007 8:14 am

With all the off-season trades and free agent signings, I thought it would be a good idea to look at teams who need one/two great signings to make them a playoff/championship contenders (or if you want also state teams who made great signings).
I'll start off with the teams which came to my mind:

NEW JERSEY NETS:
Need another big man and a SG/SF like Barnes/ Pietrus/ Posey/ Udoka.

BOSTON CELTICS:
Need a true PG. I heard they might bring Sarunas Jasikevicius, I hope for him he will get there.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS:
Need another big man and a PG. If they are going to get Bibby than it's a great fit.

L.A. CLIPPERS:
Need a PG. Would be really nice to see Francis and Mobley together again.

UTAH JAZZ:
Need a SG. Same guys mentioned with the Nets would fit here too.

Bonus - HOUSTON ROCKETS:
I really liked the additions of Scola (great low post player) and James. I would die to see Francis back in Houston but this means they will have to deal Alston/Brooks.

boston really does need a true point but we also need a real center just as bad.

I think I'd be adding Portland to this list before too long... Jack/Pryzbilla for Hedo Turkoglu. I fully expect it to happen.

Mon Jul 16, 2007 8:29 am

The NBA:

A legit center not named Duncan or O'Neal.

Oh Hi Oden, welcome...

What do you think the bucks need? Right now they have

Bogut - Gadz
Yi - Charlie V
Simmons - Ilyasova?
Redd - Noel
Mo - Bell? - Greer

Id say that they need a good SG to get time whenever redd or Simmons isnt on the court, and maybe another solid big man that has power. Our front court is kind of fragile. I wonder if we will try Yi at small forward like Dirk plays sometime. I think that would make him a handful. but we would still need another big man to do that.

Aren't you a Portland fan? Why the hell would you want to completely ruin everything?

I would give any combination of Foster/Murphy/Dunleavy/Tinsley for those 2.

And why in the hell would portland want ONE of them, let alone two? ;)

Two things:
1) I think Yi will play PF in the league.
2) I think the Bucks need a combo-guard to fill in mostly at SG and sometimes at PG and a back-up SF (I heard they might get Mason back).

Foster is the better version of Pryzvilla, and Murphy is the better version of TurkeyGlue.

that would be awsome if we got desmond mason back, we loved having him.

I believe the Bucks should continue to pursue Desmond Mason. $8+ mil per year isn't exactly small change but it wouldn't be a Foyle-like investment for the Bucks either.

hmm i dont completely agree with this, we just signed another big man in magloire to fill the need, and what will the sg/sf be for? theres nothing wrong with jefferson and carter, then you got eddie house, bostjan nachbar and antoine wright off the bench

Mon Jul 16, 2007 1:35 pm

The Grizzlies need a SG that can shoot/defend or both like a Navarro, Udoka or Barnes and also another solid veteran on the team.

As much as I like Yao, theres always one knock on him: He can't defend.

Mon Jul 16, 2007 4:49 pm

Denver Nuggets:

1. Pass first PG who is a solid defender

Then, not have any injuries and if Melo + AI can continue what they've started in April, we'll be in the thick of playoffs.

You can't be serious...

It could actually be worse. At least Adonal Foyle doesn't get minutes beyond his handful as a defensive stopper. And he's arguably one of the smartest players in the league. So you get the potential of him rambling about political science to Stephen Jackson who responds with something like "man, yeah, I know, I just want to kill everyone in the world" and Foyle spending his time on the bench pondering if tonight is the night. With Mason you just get someone who doesn't give you anything for 30 minutes a night who got robbed of a dunk contest victory a few years back.

Magloire is a great signing, but there's nobody really coming from the bench to back-up the big men (Collins - poor scorer, Nachbar - should be considered as SF, S. Williams/Boone - too young).
I didn't say that there's something wrong with VC or RJ, but you got to have a thick bench in order to win anything. Nachbar is the main back-up SF and as far as I remember House is a free agent now, I would bring a SG/SF to thicken up the bench and because I think Wright isn't that good at this point (a combo guard like Flip Murray instead of a SG/SF should be good too).

Mon Jul 16, 2007 8:32 pm

Dallas needs a perimeter defender. At least one which can stop explosive slashers. Baron Davis made the Mavs look like fools. He was the biggest instigator of the Warriors' win (apart from general sucking.)

Unfortunately, most seem to be gone (Mickael Pietrus still there, but not sure if they can do the lure.)

Everyone only really realizes Jeff's rebounding, which is a testament to how good he is. But really, Jeff's main strength is his man to man post defense. He's very good at getting his hand on the ball, and is much stronger then he looks. He was really the best in the NBA at stopping Dwight Howard last year. Dwight came in to a couple games against the Pacers last year completely on fire and Jeff just shut him down.

Boston needs money more than anything else.

Ray & Pierce take up almost $40M of the cap space and are both signed through 2010 (Pierce through 2011 actually, when he makes a nice $21 million).

And in the upcoming years Boston must extend Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Tony Allen, Rajon Rondo, Telfair, etc.. Al will have to be signed to max, otherwise some other team will offer it to him, guaranteed.

I hope Ainge has his checkbook ready. Rashard Lewis, worth $121M. Market set, let the resignings begin.

Tue Jul 17, 2007 5:56 am

thanks maes you just made my day, pointing out how bad the future is in boston lol. they should resign al now and see if they can get him under the max. you are right though, if he becomes a free agent someone will offer him the max. one bad thing about the allen trade, well one of, is that now jefferson drops to the 3rd option as pierce and allen are gonna want thier shots each night. i am more concerned with keeping jefferson happy as he is the real future of boston, not pierce. i still wish we traded away pierce instead of trading for allen.
