Nuggets Player J.R. Smith Injured in Car Crash

Sun Jun 10, 2007 7:33 pm

MILLSTONE TOWNSHIP, N.J., June 9 (AP) -- Denver Nuggets player J.R. Smith and another man were seriously injured Saturday when the sport utility vehicle Smith was driving collided with a car.

Smith and the unidentified passenger were ejected from the SUV in the crash, which occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Stagecoach Road in Millstone Township, said Sgt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman.

The passenger - who had serious head wounds - was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune, while Smith was taken there via ambulance.

Further details on their injuries were not immediately available Saturday night.

Smith's vehicle apparently went through a stop sign, Jones said, and collided with the other car. The driver of that vehicle and two other people in the SUV were injured and taken to CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, but their injuries were not considered serious.

The 21-year-old Smith was a star player at Lakewood High School and St. Benedict's Prep in New Jersey. He averaged 13.0 points in 63 games this season.

Ouch... poor guy. If he ran a stop sign and the impact was so hard that it ejected both passengers, they must have been driving pretty fast and probably not wearing their seatbelts... :wall:

Good to hear he's fine, would have been terrible to see a rising star in a fatal accident that'll ruin his career...

Mon Jun 11, 2007 2:28 am

Smith and Bell, according to the report, were not wearing seatbelts while the driver of the other car and Marshall were wearing seatbelts.

Stupid idiots. He's lucky to be doing OK, otherwise he'd be a good example of what happens when you don't wear your seatbelt.

JR Smith is such a fucking idiot.

wtf is with players named "JR" anyway.

Mon Jun 11, 2007 4:37 am

Good to hear that he's ok. You'd think DerMarr would have warned him about this.

Mon Jun 11, 2007 12:30 pm

How dumb do you have to be to not wear seatbelts? Not only did he jeopardise his health, but he could have thrown away his career and income if he wasn't so lucky.

For such a gifted athlete, he seems like a real deadshit.

look. a lot of players are too rich for their own good. yes yes, it's not their fault... but you know how some athletes are: rich and dumb.

Being rich doesn't justify their stupidity. It is just a weak excuse to try and pass the blame. They need to learn they are still responsible for their actions regardless of their overflowing bank accounts.

im just saying.. they are not qualified to manage being rich. just like people who win lotteries and burn their money.

Educating NBA players who think they're thugs.

According to the police report, the accident happened after Smith's vehicle went around a vehicle stopped at a stop sign on Stillhouse Road where it intersects with Stagecoach Road in Millstone Township.

The police report said that after Smith continued into the intersection, his car was hit by another car, which had the right of way. The impact overturned Smith's SUV, tossing out Smith and Bell in the process.

In addition to not wearing a seatbelt, it sounds like he made an even dumber move. Some people are just god awful drivers...

I was making a reference towards JR Rider.

All best wishes to him! Nuggets really need him :!:

Smith's passenger dies

Wow, rest in peace Andre Bell. Just 21 years old, my deepest condolences to his family.

This will forever be on the mind of JR. He essentially killed his friend. Maybe this will help him realize he isn't invincible and make him put his life in perspective. If he had drove responsibly, wore his seatbelt and encouraged his friend to as well, this young man would still be alive.

I have no sympathy for JR at all. It is his fault and he needs to deal with it.

His career is probably over too. He should be facing manslaughter along with other charges such as reckless driving.

Tue Jun 12, 2007 1:13 pm

i bet he wears number 21 next year...

Tue Jun 12, 2007 2:40 pm

Hopefully he'll be humbled by this and mature...if essentially killing your friend isn't a wake-up call, I don't know what is.

And hopefully the Suns make a trade for him

Tue Jun 12, 2007 3:39 pm

wow, what an asshole.....too bad he's going to jail

Tue Jun 12, 2007 9:34 pm

Quality funny thread... silly Dermarr... (Y) ...

...until Smith's friend died. Stupid Smith.

When I read the title of this thread I immediately thought to myself, "great, more playing time for A.I."
Does that make me a bad person?
