The Most Offensively Underused Player

Fri May 18, 2007 10:49 pm

Players who have talent with scoring and dishing etc but are underused. I'll start with Tayshaun Prince and Lamar Odom. Antoine Walker too.

Fri May 18, 2007 11:08 pm

I wouldn't say Antoine Walker is underused; he's simply playing a supporting role with the Heat rather than being the star player as he was in Boston. If there's a player in Miami who's being underused it's Dorell Wright.

Fri May 18, 2007 11:13 pm

Tayshaun Prince was also the first name that came to my mind.

Generally I have the feeling though that many big men score less than they actually could, probably because it's more of a guard's job to score these days.

delonte west and rudy gay

Sat May 19, 2007 12:22 am

Dwight Howard. I know the guy already averages around 18 points a game, but the man barely gets 10 shots a night. You can consider him an "underused" offensive player.

I know he's been injured this year, but Marquis Daniels is another guy that can really light it up. I remember in his rookie year the man could reel off 30 point games with ease, but he hasn't really been playing all that often after that season.

Yeah - We've all seen that clip of him draining 5 straight threes - it looks like he's the type of player who can really get hot if he starts hitting some shots.

I wont call Walker underused - he just isn't explosive enough anymore, so people guarding him are just waiting for him to launch a three pointer. And we all know how that ussualy ends.

Personally, I would like to see a guy like Mo Peterson get into a situation where he could be the 2nd or 3rd option next year.

Sat May 19, 2007 2:32 am

Tay Prince i guess. He does everything so well and he's an automatic dbl team in the post. Only a handful of guys can play him straight up. He does get the ball late in the 4th though, so the team recognises his importance.

Dwight Howard => not enough shots
Al Jefferson => give the man the ball and get out of the way
Carmelo Anthony => pass the ball AI :x

I wish this thread popped up a few years ago so I could say Yao Ming when Steve Francis seemed determined to keep the ball away from him no matter what.

I think Corey Maggette has been chronically underused, never getting more than 15 shots a game and only 10.8 last season.

Sat May 19, 2007 3:26 am

I'd agree with Andrew regarding Dorell Wright, he's still young but he's super athletic and can do a bit of everything.
Also, I think more minutes would show that players like Blatche, Ilyasova, or even Bernard Robinson have specific qualities to offer.
And I'd like to see Dan Dickau come back to his New Orleans level, he had one or two impressive years there.

Sat May 19, 2007 4:29 am

Shaq.

Sat May 19, 2007 5:04 am

Odom in almost all of the Lakers's games because of another certain player on the team.

also, Al Harrington as shown in the playoffs.

Sat May 19, 2007 7:16 am

Yeah, I totally despise the way KB dominates the ball.

To think he was picked first, what a waste.

Sat May 19, 2007 8:09 am

Shaq, he should get the ball every time down the floor, it's painful to watch plays where they just ignore him.

Quis was horribly underused by Carlisle in the beginning of the year, but after the trade he started getting more minutes and immidiately played fantastic. He is a guy that can put up 16/7/6 pretty easily, and he will once he's given a bigger role and gets healthy for a full season.

A lot of you guys are just listing inconsistent players like Al Harrington and Corey Maggette. Those guys are good players, and are used correctly, they just disappear in games sometimes because that's just the type of players they are.

I'm glad they're ignoring him sometimes, he's been doing the same 2 or 3 moves every game for 15 years now
I don't think there's anything more boring than seeing Big Daddy with the ball in the paint...

Sat May 19, 2007 10:04 am

Not sure if guys who play 35mpg can be called underused...i'd like to see James Singleton play more on some team.

And anyone on the Bucks not named Redd.

And Luther Head.

Does it matter if it looks boring? I thought the point was to score with a high percentage, not to look flashy. Go watch And1 if you're looking for something other than "the same move for 15 years".

The same move is what got him 4 rings.

Or Mo Williams. Bogut needs to get more feeds when he is open. Ilyasova needs a play or two run for him as well. Solid young player with a nice shot. Still only 19 with a big future ahead of him.

daniels until later in the season, diaw, kirilenko, maybe udrih, perhaps lafrentz, brad miller, j rose and pat burke maybe, fortson maybe, magloire, francis + marb + frye very maybe, think lee could put up better numbers with more minutes, think calderon could perhaps do more, telfair perhaps, delfino maybe, bogut should get the ball more maybe, darko maybe, sweetney

I'm not looking for anything flashy, I wouldn't be a big Duncan fan otherwise, I just enjoy watching a game a tad more if one of the main players can do more than using his giant butt to push his defender to the floor and dunk.
So yeah, it matters to me as a basketball fan.

I don't agree on Walker either, he is a 6th man at best...
Dorell Wright however shud get to play more, and think he will next season..

A lot of players are decent offensively, just that they need to play within the sytem and play some defence..

Carmelo needs the ball in the post every time.. AI is shooting too much

Also Delonte West isn't really a huge scorer, he has Pierce and Jefferson and he is playing point a lot.. soo ya

Luthur head does not need da ball more......He got owned in Utad soo bad...

Odom needs da ball a little more..

I don't think Redd should get teh ball less, hes a great percenage shooter, he has a really low turnover rate.. he is a great player..

Brand needs da ball a little more, Magetti doesn't take that many shots but he is getting to the free throw line a lot, which means he does have quite a bit of posessions..

Why dwight gets soo many shots? look at his turnovers...

I would say Yao needs more shots but he is really gettng enuf shot now, he shud be takin 20+ shots a game... even tho he turns it over a lot, but he is 1 of da best offensive post players in da league

Sat May 19, 2007 4:28 pm

Kobe Bryant...jk, but given the Lakers' current situation, it wouldn't hurt to give him the rock every fucking time.

I agree with Andrew about Dorell Wright. From the little I've seen from him, he has a huge upside. He's got great coordination, quickness, athleticism, and will probably develop a decent jump shot. He has also shown that he can rebound and block a lot of shots. On top of all this, he is still growing, meaning he hasn't even grown into his own body yet.

Ben Wallace, since he has trade to Chicago, not seeing him much on the offensive

...because he has no offense.
