what's with the misconception that Nuggets were running up the score?

First off, this isnt the first time this season where Nuggets had starters in in the last cpl minutes of a blow out

That's because of Karl's friendship with Larry Brown. If Karl was trying to send a message, it bit him in the ass. He's going to lose his star player for a long time, which might cost him a playoff spot.

No.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 3:41 am

That was a nice brawl..but not as good as the pacers and detroit one. Melo is a pussy for running away after the sucker punch. For that alone he should be suspended.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 3:46 am

Meh, it aint liek Melo will get suspended for the whole season, he will get 10 games, a fine, but nothing more, good lesson for him tho, think of consequences be4 doing sumthing.

I think u're dreaming dude, I'd be surprised if he gets less than 25 games given the circumstances. Because he's no bad boy a la Artest or Stephen Jackson doesn't mean Stern will give him the easy treatment IMO...
And yeah, Isiah's comments are so weak and pathetic. Even if Karl was stupid to leave his main guys on court at that point (he's gonna regret that for a while...), that doesn't explain the flagrant foul and the coach trying to justify that with being respectful to the home team that's having its ass kicked. No wonder the Knicks have been pitiful for so long with that type of philosophy, when they should have everything to succeed...

CK I'm stealing that sig man. Ima use it on M2.

I'm not american so i'm not an insider but can someone tell wich law or rule in america or the NBA says that a superstar like Melo should get a higher suspension than a normal NBA player in situations like this. Melo is just a human like the other players. In europe we would call that discrimination and some players and teams would take David Stern to court for this. It's not Melo's problem that he is one of the best players in the world. Strange behaviour some people always want to bring a superstar down.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 4:45 am

I swear to god, if Melo gets anything less then 30 games I'm going to be so fucking pissed. JO got 25 for punching a fan that ran on to the court, which is obviously much more justified then punching a player in a situation like that. I want to see Stern consistent in this type of thing. If he's going to come down as hard as he did on the Pacers he better do the same to these guys.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 4:52 am

30+ games suspension for a punch like that. You are kidding right? In soccer you only get 4 or 5 games for that and in the NHL players sometimes don't even get suspended for fights like that. Don't make the NBA a Gay league.

Did you by any chance see what happened? Carmelo threw a punch. It was practically over until Melo swung for no apparent reason. Mardy Collins will be gone for a while but not as long as Melo. Mardy started it with the hard foul but I'm thinking back to when Ben fouled Artest and was only gone for 5 games so I imagine it would be about the same. Melo's not getting a longer suspension because of his superstar status, he's getting it because of what he did. IMO this is what it should look like:

 Most Games
G Nate Robinson-instigating and tackling JR Smith
F Carmelo Anthony-Throwing a punch

 Next Most
G Mardy Collins-Starting the whole thing with the flagrant 2 foul
G JR Smith-Fighting with Nate Robinson

Short suspension:
F Jared Jeffries-Involved in the fight
C Jerome James: Got off the bench for 3rd time all-season. This suspension gives him an excuse for why he rides the pine so long.

Well in those leagues players don't get fined $5,000 for wearing an armband with their name on it do they? Or get fined for listening to music before a game. This year Stern really wants to show his "Zero-Tolerance" policy and I think he really feels the need to use this as an example.

I agree. However, I saw my team have its season that could have been a championship one ruined because of stupid suspensions like that. If JO gets 25 games for punching a fan that is on the court, which is clearly more dangerous then another player, then I want to see the same type of punishment, hopefully more.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 5:09 am

I was replying to people who said that Melo should get a higher suspension because he's a superstar. That's bullshit. He needs to be suspended for what he did. Between 5 and 10 games is okay in my opinion. Nothing special really happened.

When is David Stern going to retire? This league needs an old veteran who understands the players.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 5:12 am

Damn, the brawl is even mentioned in the Dansih media today - normally they don't even bring box scores.

NHL guys dont get suspended for starting a fight, thats the best part of the game now, when they drop the gloves, but yea I agree, that Stern is turning NBA into a gay league, dress policy, new ball, zero tolerance, are those guys in prison or sumthing? I thought America is a free country u can say anything u want.

well, seeing that Melo's one of the NBA's 3 poster boys, I think Stern will take it easy on him. I wonder how much more it'll take before Melo's image is tarnished. there's already accounts of him and his weed habit (which I heard is legal to possess up to 1 oz in Denver) and now this.

Here is another little thing that could hurt Melo's image. I saw the clip on AMW quite a while ago but I just can't find it.

Well, wasn't this a cute little scuffle, bunch of wankers, the lot of them. Carmelo ran faster than a Turk at the sight of skinheads over here.

Nothing special really happened??? I don't think you saw it right man...
Doesn't matter whether he's a superstar or not, it was fucking stupid and 5-10 games wouldn't make any sense for something that bad.

You can't compare hockey or soccer with basketball, that kind of incident almost never happens in the NBA precisely because the league is so harsh with its players' behavior.
For fuck's sake, you can't even discuss a referee's decision or you get a technical automatically this year...While the latter is clearly too extreme, I think the rest of what's being done makes total sense. It's not about making the game gay or anything, just keeping it clean. If you really want to see guys punching each other on a constant basis, then yeah, I guess NHL is a better fit.

I'm amazed that Isiah is still in the league. I didn't realize exactly how absurd it was until I heard his press conference. I've always hated him more than any other player, because he never displayed any sportsmanship whatsoever. He ran the CBA into the ground, almost ran the Pacers into the ground, and now has made the Knicks into a mess.

I'd normally enjoy the Celtics having much better luck than the Knicks, but Isiah's team is such a black spot on basketball that I can't even appreciate it. Those few articles got it right on - any coach of a professional sports team that complains about running up the score is totally embarrassing himself. I don't really blame the Nuggets either, because the Nuggets scored something like 19 points in the last two minutes of the game against the Celtics the night before. Knicks need to fire everyone.

It's called, the state doesn't own everything. The NBA is a private organization and can set and apply it's own rules and punishments as it sees fit.
Anthony15 wrote:I thought America is a free country u can say anything u want.

Right, it's a free country, so the NBA can set whatever rules it wants and the state doesn't intervene in it's private dealings.

"Free speech" in the Constitution means protecting political speech from the state. The NBA is not the state and having a new ball isn't preventing political speech. Stern and the owners of the league (Stern is powerless without the consent of the teams) can attempt to manage the leagues image however they see fit.

If the players don't like it, they can leave.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 11:04 am

Yeah, the free speach argument was pretty stupid. Every business has rules that they set in place for their employees, the NBA is no different.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 1:37 pm

Wow! That was worse than i imagined it when i saw the headlines on nba.com, i saw the whole thing on youtube and it got pretty out of control, especially when 2 players flew into the crowd fighting. Not only did Carmelo punch a guy in the face, he threw another player straight into the ground first. He acted like a dickhead. I think as soon as he threw the punch he realised straight away he was screwed and then backed down, but he made himself look like a sissy.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 9:32 pm

so now supposedly Isiah called for the foul.

Video from the game later confirmed that Thomas appeared to mouth the words, "You don't want to go to the basket right now. It wouldn't be a good idea."

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2700761

Anyone else think that girl next to Isiah in the "talking" video is kinda cute? (<= shows how interested I am in this fiasco)

Mon Dec 18, 2006 9:45 pm

:shake: this was pretty obvious... i was wondering how long it would take for it to come out.

i always hated Isaiah because he was on the Pistons teams that took Magic and the Lakers down...

but with what he did with the CBA and the Knicks (including some lawsuit from a chick that used to work at MSG or the Knicks, I forget) I say he is one corrupt executive. They should suspend Isaiah for his actions and role in this as well.
