Stockton didn't have a hard time holding the ball, he dishes out a lot of passes to teammates that can't handle or control the ball in receiving the pass.
Stockton passes to a dumb teammate (Ostertag), dumb teammate is too slow to notice it, misses the pass, turnover is credited to Stockton.

Another thing to consider is that Stockton may be number two all time on the TO category, but he played a TON of games. If you look up turnovers/game stats you'll see guys like Isiah, Magic, Iverson, etc. ahead of him.

Stockton also had Hornacek, one of the most accurate shooters at the time. Having a guy who shoots 48% from the 3 point range helps those assist numbers.

I do think they're similar players. They're both unstoppable in a pick & roll situation with a halfway decent partner. If anything, i think Malone's fame hinged more on Stockton than vice versa.

Stockton's knee-in-your-groin defense is illegal in today's NBA...if he was young & playing today his defense would look more like Nash's...mainly positional and don't touch the other guy.

Nash is as good as Stockton if not better, that's just my opinion. I respect both a whole lot

i was watching the box score from the 4th onwards, its good to see jason kidd get into some really good form, and eddie house seems to be ready to go for the 6th man spot

sorry dude, but you must be high with statements like that. John Stockton was a very good defender, Nash is not even recognised as average. There's just no comparison between the 2 on the defensive end.

I disagree. Nash entered the league in 96, he played through the league even before the "you can't touch this" rule was implemented.
Even before the league went soft, Nash's defense is not even comparable or at the same level as Stockton's. Stockton is still a better defender than Nash.

Jeese, why don't you guys make a John Stockton thread.

I haven't watched much of the NBA this year ,but if there were more exciting games like this, I definitely would.

Unbunch your panties will ya'

Topic changes within a thread are a common occurence in the NLSC and besides, it's a good discussion rather than seeing post like "OMG!!111 greatst game from nash! Nash 4 MVP1!11! agen"

It's these times i get pissed off that jason kidd doesn't get the respect he deserves. He got fucked by not getting the MVP a few years ago and nash is hailed as the king of point guard kindom with absolutly no defense and 10/11 assists per game. jesus!

being canadian and hailing from the same province nash grew up in, i agree whole heartedly. the 01-02 season was a complete travesty in terms of MVP voting. how duncan beat kidd for the award still boggles my mind.
