Stockton also had Hornacek, one of the most accurate shooters at the time. Having a guy who shoots 48% from the 3 point range helps those assist numbers.
I do think they're similar players. They're both unstoppable in a pick & roll situation with a halfway decent partner. If anything, i think Malone's fame hinged more on Stockton than vice versa.
Stockton's knee-in-your-groin defense is illegal in today's NBA...if he was young & playing today his defense would look more like Nash's...mainly positional and don't touch the other guy.
