Intercepting CPU passes

We all know how the CPU intercepts all your passes that go near a defender, but does anyone know how to return the favour?
For example after missed shot and the CPU is trying to fast break, I have a defender back and the CPU tries to pass half the length of the court to the fast breaking player. As the pass is coming up the court, I get my defender in perfect position to intercept the pass but he just stands there and does nothing. I have tried pressing the jump, steal, take charge, face up buttons to intecept the pass but with no luck. Same thing happens when I front the post player, the ball just goes through my players body.
Anyone know how to pick off these kind of passes?

its almost impossible to pick the cpu passes. only time i can is when they pass the ball for a post-up play. I just stand in front of the cpu and press the steal button like crazy.

A question i know the answer to...
Take Charge...that's the button...when the ball is in the air (going for the intercept) you push 'Take a charge' and he'll rase his arms and intercept it...
