Al Harrington deals...

Sun Aug 20, 2006 4:58 pm

Hawks trade options

• 1. Do a sign-and-trade with the Lakers for Chris Mihm, Aaron McKie, Brian Cook and a future draft pick.

Mihm is making $4.2 million this season, McKie $2.5 million and Cook just $1.5 million. All three are in contract years, meaning the Hawks would have the option of re-signing them if they fit in well with their young talent or letting them move on at season's end. The draft pick is the cherry on top.

• 2. Do a sign-and-trade with the Nuggets for Joe Smith, a future first-round pick and $3 million in cash.

Smith is another solid veteran power forward in a contract year. He'll make $6.8 million this season. The $3 million essentially cuts his salary in half, and the Hawks still get the draft pick they covet.

• 3. Sign-and-trade Harrington and send him to Golden State for Mickael Pietrus, Zarko Cabarkapa, Andris Bierdins and a future draft pick.

Convincing a team to give up three young and relatively inexpensive talents, all three in contract years, and a draft pick would be the steal of the century for the Hawks. But if the Warriors are as eager to get their hands on Harrington as has been rumored, maybe itճ more than just a pipe dream. Pietrus ($2.5 million) Cabarkapa ($2.1) and Bierdins ($1.9) would fortify the Hawksՠroster at three different positions (small forward, power forward and center) without busting the budget. The draft pick is gravy.

Sun Aug 20, 2006 7:51 pm

NO1 will work because Behind Lamar, You-Kno-Who Needs help scoring and you cant alyways rely on Smush and Sasha and Kwame to give u great games.

You need another consistenet scorer

fuckin triple post. besides this is for atlanta, we're not talking about what the lakers need we are talking about which is the best deal for atlanta.

Why are they trading him again? Does Harrington want out?

Mon Aug 21, 2006 4:06 am

Well for a Nuggets supporter I prefer #2, Smith is quite old and we already got a bunch of big men, if we get Al Harrington then that means that K-Mart is definately out of Denver(damn I cant wait til the day he gets traded!)

Probably wouldn't work for the Nets much, they've got RJ doing a solid job at small forward and they need a defensive minded big man more than a scorer.

The Hawks could make a steal with the 3rd option, but I'd say that the Warriors would be stupid to accept such a trade. Let's face it: Harrington is a good player, but will never become a superstar. With his new contract he will certainly get overpaid being a burden in the salary cap.

On the opposite side, Pietrus and mostly Biedrins have the potential to become big players in this league at no risk for the Hawks (if they fail they simply won't be resigned). Cabarkapa is still a relatively young player who could turn into an interesting post player. And I won't even mention the draft pick.

Mon Aug 21, 2006 11:01 am

Why would any team give up that many assets (3 players in the regular rotation + 1st round draft pick?!?!) for a guy that can just walk out Atlanta's door without the Hawks being able to do single thing about it?

The only thing ATL of value ATL is trading is the ability to sign AL to a big contract so he can go to a team without cap space. Al is a free man, he's not Hawks property.

I think all 3 of these trades are ludicrous.

I'm suprised they'd (golden state) would be so quick to ship off Beadriens.

I like him, aside from the fact that he looks astonishingly like johnny knoxeville, and that he's pals with my latvian friend, he seems like he's a solid player with a lot of potential. Anyhow, I guess they'd be more quick to give up on him since they just drafted O'Bryant.

Mon Aug 21, 2006 12:45 pm

no3 is just plain crap.... too much talent given away.... no1 is probably the most reasonable

Mon Aug 21, 2006 1:56 pm

The third option is a straight up robbery. Pietrus AND Biedrins? I thought the Warriors staff were expecting some big things from these players in the future, especially Biedrins.

Mon Aug 21, 2006 3:14 pm

he'll probably go to a team not mentioned in the list for a couple of 1st rounders

Mon Aug 21, 2006 8:43 pm

I hope he ends up in New Jersey. :D
If we were able to "sign" Shareef I think we can sign Harrington.

Mon Aug 21, 2006 9:31 pm

lol no way harrington turns down 5-6 more million dollars.... the only reason the nets were able to get adbul-rahim is because he was available for the mid-level and because he failed the kings physical.....

Tue Aug 22, 2006 12:51 am

The third option for sure. It's three young players, two of them being promising, and a draft pick. Can't go wrong with that.

Tue Aug 22, 2006 3:14 am

Now there is a new trade in the mix.

According to two league sources, the Warriors have revived discussions with three teams on a multiple-player swap, with the principal parts involving Mike Dunleavy Jr. going to the Clippers, Corey Maggette to Denver and Joe Smith to Atlanta, with the Warriors getting Harrington. Man, i dont know what the clippers are thinking. Mike D isnt THAT good.

Walsh Says Harrington
Deal Still On Table
By Conrad Brunner
Aug. 21, 2006

The Pacers are still very much involved in discussions about a possible sign-and-trade deal for Atlanta forward Al Harrington, franchise CEO & President Donnie Walsh said today.
Weekend media reports suggested ownership had stepped in to squelch the deal, leading the Hawks to re-open trade discussions with other teams.

"I think we're coming down to it and we'll either get it or we won't," said Walsh. "It's a negotiation – in terms of the trade, in terms of the (contract). We've been negotiating and that takes time. Usually, the press doesn't get wind of that until it gets toward the end. But here it seems like they were in it before we had any understanding we could do a trade with Atlanta and then (reported) definitely that the deal was done or that it was imminent before we even talked to Al's people. You have to understand, there was also a change of agents in all this, so that took some time, too.

"I think it's business as usual, myself. It's gone the way every deal goes for me."

Walsh said co-owners Herb and Melvin Simon have been involved in the discussions, but that has been the norm throughout his career. The difference in this case, he said, has been the public nature of the trade negotiations through ongoing newspaper accounts in Atlanta and Indianapolis.

"The owners always get involved. The owners were involved from day one," he said. "If you think you're giving out $20-40 million packages without getting in touch with the owner, you're crazy. (Herb Simon)'s involvement has always been helpful to me. Look, this guy has made some great deals in his life, so he always brings a wrinkle in that's useful.

"I think he's in support of the deal but within the parameters."

The framework for the deal is in place, Walsh said. What remains is to work out the details of Harrington's contract.

"There have been three stages to this," Walsh said. "The first stage was where there were a lot of teams trying to trade for Al, we had the exception but it looked like they could get more money if they went in different directions so we weren't as involved then. When that got over with and those trades didn't go down, then they started focusing on us. But then we had to deal with Atlanta as to what it would take to make this trade. So that was a negotiation, and that took time.

"We got to the point last week where we kind of understand each other and now we're dealing with Al. It's that simple."

While not divulging details of the negotiations, Walsh said media reports of a 6-year, $57 million deal are little more than supposition based on the Pacers' $7.5 million trade exception. Those figures were reported before Walsh had entered into negotiations with Tellem, which began in earnest last week. Harrington fired his previous agent during the trade talks and hired Tellem, who was required by league rules to wait two weeks before assuming his role as the forward's official representative.

"You're going through stages where the press seems to have things, I think from the players and the agents, because it's in their interest to kind of put it out there," he said. "I know this: we haven't made any statements, and I'm talking about me, Herb and Larry (Bird).

"I just think there's been a lot of misinformation about where this deal was and a lot of suppositions. People had the deal negotiated before we even talked about it. It was pretty easy to look at our exception and say, 'Oh, it's going to be $57 million,' when we hadn't even talked about it yet. I read last week the deal was imminent. Who's telling them that?

"Deals take time. There are negotiations going on. It's no different than any deal we've done other than it's been in the press for a long time. It has not been imminent at any point, and certainly not at the point it was reported to have been imminent."

So what is the status of the deal?

Said Walsh: "It's in negotiation."
