Houston Rockets Thread

Thu Jul 20, 2006 5:37 am

I dont know if there is something like this already, but anyway, talk about the Rockets all you want. Ill start off by saying that, according to clutchfans.net (http://clutchfans.net/news/1350/spanoulis_rockets_agree_to_terms/), the Rockets have just signed Vassilis Spanoulis, who seems to travel on every single one of his plays. Cheers!

Thu Jul 20, 2006 8:32 pm

Never seen him play but its a low risk move for the rockets. 5mil for 3 years is definitely cheap.

Fri Jul 21, 2006 2:04 pm

dont know bout that guy but id like to give my two cents on the Gay trade, lol

I thought it was definatley a big risk, sure battier is an excellent defender, can knock down the occassional 3 and will play well with Yao and Tmac. But he's basically in his prime whereas Gay has an enormous offensive potential and could really learn off someone like Tmac. with the absence of swift they lose alot of athletism and defense at the power foward position. All in all i would never have done this trade, Houston will begin to regret this in years to come.

Fri Jul 21, 2006 4:25 pm

I'm sure with all the GM's... Any trade with Jerry West is regrettable... and I have a feeling the Gay trade is gonna be no different.. because it could turn out to be as big of a ripoff as the Kobe/Vlade trade back in 96.

Actually, it was the complete opposite. It was a low-risk, sure thing deal. Battier will definitely produce. Gay is uncertain, very risky. It might not be a good deal, but if definitely wasn't risky.

It could be a ripoff...and then again it could not be.

But I think you're seriously overrating Jerry West. He's traded for some young guys that went nowhere, and also traded away some very good young players. In short, he makes mistakes, and he's not perfect.

Anyway, about Spanoulis. This was a great deal, especially for a player drafted 51st overall. I think he'll be in the rotation, an 8th or 9th man. He'll definitely be getting some minutes. Hopefully he'll produce from those minutes.

you're definatley a very optimistic Rockets fan

Sure thing meaning that Battier is a sure thing. Gay is not.

Fri Jul 21, 2006 11:15 pm

i thought that most people thought of kobe as being just as risky as gay... anyways jerry west is a great talent evaluator except for when he passed up stoudemire but that year he just got into the grizzlies gm job so it was a quick move but overall he has a great track record

Ever checked out the boards at Clutchfans yet? Many Rockets already felt that the Rockets got ripped off. Sure, if it was straight up Gay for Battier, then there wouldn't be as much complaints, but the fact that the Rockets had to throw in Swift, when the combo of Gay/Swift might've gotten more than just Battier was the main focus. Compared to many GM's in the league right now, Jerry West is that good. I'd take him over Carroll "my glasses are too big" Dawson. Let's just hope that Gay turns out to be a bust, and Stromile continues to be unproductive so it'd make the trade seem somewhat even.

hm.... rox signed Vassilis Spanoulis... i dont know much about this dude. therefore i dunno...

hopefully it will help with their guard problem. or make them stronger

Clutchfans is not a great fan site. It has a lot of bandwagonning and all. Not the most reputable site. It's only because it's been around a lot.

In any case, I think this is a trade that won't be decided for about five years.

Then again, Houston's sort of making a valid point.

With the health of their team being questionable, they need to get good players to complement T-Mac and Yao and then go deep in the playoffs now. By the time Gay develops, T-Mac will be leaving his prime.

and then when t-mac had left his prime, gay would have taken over, so houston is not making a valid pioint, and i think everyone is waiting until cd gets fired

Sun Jul 23, 2006 5:16 pm

Gay has all the tools but can he make it ? that is the main question and I think someone like him needs a motivator and mentor and I doubt T-Mac is any of those.

Mon Jul 24, 2006 11:58 pm

gay averages 10/4/3 for his career stromile averages 9/5 for his career lol :D

Rudy Gay is either going to be a good player or a really bad one, and I don't think that Houston is willing to take that risk on building their franchise around a shaky foundation.

Wed Aug 02, 2006 4:55 am

the trade was dumb....the rockets know that t-mac doesnt have mush time left, so instead of developing someone who can follow in his footsteps and has the potential to be an superstar or at least an allstar....they trade him for a guy who also doesnt have much time left and not only do they trade gay, they also trade stromile with him........now the entire rockets is build up of a bunch old tired veterans who have never been in an allstar game (besides t-mac and yao)...and would not help this team to a championship in a couple years, because thats when 80 percent of the team is going to retire anyways.........i just hope yao takes over next year.......OVERALL the gay trade... was gay ass hell

Wed Aug 02, 2006 5:57 am

I don't think you can say the Gay trade is a bad trade yet. You don't know if Gay will be a good NBA player. It will probably be a few years before you find out if it was a good trade or not. Houston did get a player who will make an immediate impact, so this might be a good trade for the Rockets.

what do you guys think of mcgrady,

i like him and stuff, but his back is dangerous and theyd be better off trading him while he still has a good amount of value...

Wed Aug 09, 2006 1:33 am

i recently read an article were mcgrady talks about getting his passion for the game, his fire, his athleticism and health back and even better than he was before. i think its gonna be a very good season as mcgrady says his back is feeling great. we will see...

Thu Aug 10, 2006 12:01 pm

mcgrady is a fucking lazy ass moron.... if he spent more time working out and building is core he wouldn't be having these problems... i heard he has one of the poorest work ethics in the league..... maybe battier could help him out a little bit with those

McGrady is one of the most passionate and inspirational players there is, and he's not in a playing slump, he's injured. Plus, when he was in the lineup the Rockets were clearly miles ahead of where they were without him and Yao. He's not one of the players who's going to sit back and gain a lot of weight and slack off, he'll come back twice as effective.

Thu Aug 10, 2006 12:23 pm

^ Agree with NJNETSFAN

However, Yao is the main man, not Mcgrady

Btw: the story of me meeting T-Mac

I was at a high school tournament at my sisters' school(held annuallly, I see and meet alot of NBA stars before they head to the pros (Y) ), and alot of the top high schools in the area were there:

Oak Hill
Montrose Christian
Mount Zion Christian Academy
St. Vincent- St. Mary's
St. Johns at Prospect Hall (in the city where I live)

and T-Mac was playing one year, he was amazing, windmills, tomahawks, exposive drives

and after the thing, I got to go up right close to him and i saw a scout taking notes

mcgrady looked at him, then looked at me( i was young then like 6 or 7) and said, i wanna see a scout doing that to you one day kid...

cool, huh?

Ive seen players like

Steve Blake
Melo
McCants I think...
King James
and some others

but I only talked to McGrady...

Thu Aug 10, 2006 2:42 pm

I wouldn't consider McGrady lazy, but he's no work horse either. If he didn't have any work ethic at all he'd probably never would have developed a legtimate jumpshot and would be a Trevor Ariza type player at the moment.

Thu Aug 10, 2006 3:32 pm

Anyone who thinks Stromile Swift is any good has been playing too much NBA Live. The guy sucks, isn't coachable, and hasn't gotten any better since his first year in the league. (N)
