NBA Salary Cap at 53.1 Million

Wed Jul 12, 2006 2:09 pm

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2516704

Its up about 3.6 million from last year.

The thing that amazes me looking at that chart is how the average salary has skyrocketed over the years (over 5 million), when in the 80's 5 million was the cap number.

Your thoughts?

Good news for teams that are hovering around the cap at the moment. Wasn't all that long ago the limit was only around $20 million. It's all relative though, the average salary has also climbed every year since the cap came into effect.

lol wonder what the average salary will be in 20 years.... 10 mil?

Wed Jul 12, 2006 4:26 pm

yep. clubs are getting richer and can afford more and then the players will get paid more

Good news for the Grizzlies. We can probably use part of the Trade Exception on a trade and probably remain under the luxury cap threashold as well.

i must confess, my english is not too good.

woot! now that the official number is in, the reported FA signings can now be official and the battle for the rest of the FA's shall begin

let's get the "this is awesome news for team X" line out the way since a higher salary cap is beneficial to almost every team

Thu Jul 13, 2006 10:19 am

knicks still way over the salary cap lol, but they will be much better off after Allan Houston's contract finish this year.

Fri Jul 14, 2006 12:21 am

knicks are highrollers..who are bankrupt
i dont know if this is good or bad for the league..cause then in 10 years the people who dont even play games will get paid more than an 80's legend would get paid...
weird

Huh? How come the sudden huge increase? Or typo?

Fri Jul 14, 2006 5:42 am

i think it is a typo

Fri Jul 14, 2006 5:53 am

no, theyre 1 year deals.

Fri Jul 14, 2006 8:59 am

lol well no one is questioning those years Jordan made $30million since bulls won it all both years

Fri Jul 14, 2006 9:04 am

Yeah that was the actual money made, it obviously paid off, especially since he won MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Scoring Champ, and Finals MVP all in the same year.

Fri Jul 14, 2006 9:19 am

No, he didn't. He never won those three awards and the scoring title in the same year.

Fri Jul 14, 2006 9:42 am

i found that at basketball-reference, they also said this about the salaries

The salary data was provided by Dan Rosenbaum, who collected the data from Rodney Fort. Much of the data originally came from Patricia Bender. While the salary data is believed to be as accurate as possible, please keep in mind that collecting proprietary salary data is an inexact science. Minimum salaries were given to all players without salary data in 1989, and 1991 through 2005. In other seasons with missing salary data, salaries were extrapolated from other seasons if the player had known salary data both before and after the given season.
