here comes the inevitable disagreeing post...
he's requesting/asking for permission to get the number, not ordering the Celtic organization/Maxwell to give him the #.
what's really moronic is Danny Ainge passing on Foye/Roy to acquire Telfair
Thu Jul 13, 2006 9:23 am
The fact that he's even asking is disrespectful. It's the principle of the thing.
Thu Jul 13, 2006 9:35 am
my god.. does he not realize the organization he is playing for now? its one of the most respected sports organizations ever and one of the most winningst too. he can't just simply ask one of those legends to un-retire his jersey for some scrub who is way over his head...
Thu Jul 13, 2006 10:49 am
Whats the harm in Asking. if they say no he will just wear another number. aint no harm in taking a shot at it.
Thu Jul 13, 2006 10:52 am
asking shows his lack of respect for basketball history. It's not like Telfair did anything special so far.

There's a reason why his number is retired. The Celtics can't simply just allow a player to use that number, especially if its an overhyped scrub that hasn't done anything remarkable in the league.
Like I said earlier, retiring someone's jersey and number should be something that is respected by all players.

HAHAHAHAHA
wow thats funny. the season hasnt even started and he's already making some big moves...he is probably just doing this to get a trade...
since he loves 31 so much once he is on another team he can wear it again

True, but as Yohance said it's the principle. Demanding the number would show a complete lack of class and he hasn't done that, but he's still (for the most part) unproven and the new player in town asking permission for one of the most storied teams in the league to unretire a jersey that belonged to a Finals MVP. Perhaps he hasn't gone about it in a completely disrespectful way but it's a very bold request to say the least.

BASSY, YOU'RE THE MAN !
I've never heard anybody requesting to unretire a number... I think is disrispectful but I understand him, because it always has been his jersey number, and means a lot to him.
Fri Jul 14, 2006 7:28 pm
Well If he can't get n°31 maybe he should ask Larry for the 33

I was thinking the same thing on draft night....I know who I'd want & he doesn't wear the No. 31
Sat Jul 15, 2006 2:20 pm
I just hope he gets traded...to Indiana...

So he gets traded again...
Sun Jul 16, 2006 5:35 am
i hope he gets traded to somewhere where we won't see him again possibly to china or sth.
Sun Jul 16, 2006 2:06 pm
Please say that the guy above me isn't Homer. I might kill myself if it is.
About Bassy, he's an idiot. Why doesn't he just go back to Lincoln or somthing.
Sun Jul 16, 2006 2:11 pm
Telfair should stuff some cornbread up his ass.
Sun Jul 16, 2006 3:37 pm
we should ask for 13
Sun Jul 16, 2006 6:50 pm
DAMN, you could actually unretire a jersey????
Sun Jul 16, 2006 7:47 pm
they did it for jordan. even though it was his own number lol
Mon Jul 17, 2006 12:09 am
Hey, Telfair cannot be that idiot

I guess (and I hope) he was joking

fair enough. Telfair does strike me someone that's naive to do something like but at the least he's requesting the number.
heh- if someone on the bulls was requesting Jordan's number, i would think it's a joke
Tue Jul 18, 2006 12:16 pm
He's got some nerve to say the least.
Thu Jul 20, 2006 1:02 pm
It's exactly like Someone in bulls to ask for #23
in Indiana to ask for #31
or in Utah to ask for #12...
Thu Jul 20, 2006 2:02 pm
I'd have to agree with FreeGamer, I think it's time Telfair just picks a new number. It really shouldn't matter, show what you got on the court....Your number won't matter then
Sun Jul 23, 2006 5:45 am
I think the headline is a bit misleading. He's not asking for the number to be unretired, he's just asking for permission to wear it. The no. 31 can still be hanging from the rafters, right?
