Tim Thomas will spurn the team that gave him a second chance in order to join the L.A. Clippers.
The East Valley Tribune is reporting that Thomas will leave the Suns for Clips and sign a deal worth almost double what the Suns were willing to offer.
The deal is speculated to be for four years at the mid-level exception totalling $24 million.
Damn, the Clippers aren't BSing.
Probably won't be able to keep Cassell though?
Sun Jul 02, 2006 9:15 am
I find this kinda funny. From a guy people many thought his best years were behind him to a 24 million dollar man. Boy how things change in a couple months.
Sun Jul 02, 2006 9:27 am
well the clippers have to fill the void left by radmanovic, i dont think he is going to resign with the clippers.
Sun Jul 02, 2006 9:33 am
Good aquisition for the clippers. I'm looking forward to the clippers being a proper team next year.
Sun Jul 02, 2006 9:36 am
I don't know what to think, kinda shitty signing IMO. One good playoffs run doesn't validate giving him $24 million.
He might just return to his old, overpaid, whining, mediocre self.
Sun Jul 02, 2006 10:09 am
4 yrs and $24million is good and reasonable for Tim Thomas.
He can light it up some nights; can shoot 3s; decent role player
Sun Jul 02, 2006 10:22 am
This is going to be one of those contracts that just keeps getting passed around the league long after he's gone. I don't expect him to see the third year of this before either getting bought out or traded. He's shown several times that he, like many other players, he plays well in contract years in order to get a long term deal.
Sun Jul 02, 2006 10:43 am
itll be interesting to see how much they use him considering they have alot of tall players (brand, radmanovic, kaeman, singleton and even paul davis now is spose)
Sun Jul 02, 2006 11:14 am
Mark my words, Tim Thomas won't do SHIT on the Clippers next year. The dumbass (yes, I'm officially bitter) was only effective because he's allowed to shoot whenever he wants in the Suns' system. That's not going to happen in LAC, where it's a much more half-court system.
The only reason I'm bummed is because I felt the Suns traded their draft picks only to get enough money to re-sign TT. Oh well...there's other players out there willing to show off what they have in the Suns' system.
Congrats TT, you sonofabitch.
Sun Jul 02, 2006 11:57 am
That is true. He will not contribute as much as he did with the Suns for sure. He fits into the Suns' system. Pretty much any player can fit in with the Suns system because of Steve Nash, the fastbreaks, and the ball movement. With the Suns, Thomas got a lot of opportunities to score, and so that is just what he did. With the Clippers, it will be slower for Thomas, not to mention all the players such as Brand, Maggette, Mobley, and possibly Cassell. Thomas will be a factor though, I believe. I can see him draining the deep perimeter shots and 3's and perhaps a few clutch shots for them. I think this is a bad move by Thomas. He will regret it. Now the Suns are looking for 3 solid veteran players they can use with the money they intended to give Thomas. Some players that they have contacted Saturday are Matt Harpring, Lindsey Hunter, Bobby Jackson, and Chucky Atkins. Matt Harpring is a good selection in my opinion. He is a better shooter than Thomas, just that he had been plagued with his knee injury the past 2 seasons. However, now he says that he is healthy and nearly 100%.

yeah but you will hardly ever see a tall pf/C player stay 100% for a season
but anyway i think he'll be a great addtion to Clippers and he is worth that deal, as he can play many roles
and i honestly think Suns have made a big mistake on taking him for granted like this....

Gotta agree with Dro, Tim Thomas wont do anything in LA. He was successful because of D'Antoni's offensive system which fit his skill set perfectly. While it's great to see the Clips making some moves and following up their great season by adding rather than subtracting, I think what they really need is a playmaker. They have an entire team of the best role players around, but aside from Brand who do they have who can create offense? Cassell is good, but he can be streaky, and he isn't a pass first PG. I'm not convinced that Livingston is the PG of the future just yet. Mobley basically disappeared during the playoffs, as did Kaman. They're just complimentary players, and that's all Tim Thomas is. They wont make it any farther than last season with one great player.

It's just a shame that the FA market blows this year, for two reasons.
1) Desperate teams dish out mad bank to the best player(s) available (Tim Thomas)
2) Not many quality guys left for the Suns to grab.
I'd like Lindsay Hunter. Smart veteran...can play backup PG allowing Barbosa to shift to his natural position (SG), as well as taking the playmaking responsibility out of Barbosa's hands, which is what he does worst.
I'm not convinced with Harpring's health...Atkins blows.

oh... my.. god. i hate tim thomas. he will ruin the clippers

Tim Thomas is OK. Maybe Clippers are looking to deal Corey Maggette?
EDIT: nevermind. they're filling the void of Vladmir Radmonivic since he's gonna be a Laker...

Fun Fact: Cassell rejected the clippers offer as soon as Tim Thomas was signed.
Go Lakers!

Wow the neat deals pop up. I also dont think he'll do a lot in LA but if they want to be as good as they were last year they need to fill voids that might be leaving. At least he's not being horribly overpaid...

Tim Thomas should have stayed with the Suns, he actually plays well there and his style of play actually works. He's not gonna do anything in LA.

Real Fact:
Cassell, the 36-year-old point guard and undisputed on-court general of the Clippers last season, late Saturday agreed to a two-year, $13-million contract, keeping intact a Clippers nucleus that lasted longer than the Lakers in this year's playoff.
Just in case some peeps don't wanna register. Cassell had two other offers from Denver and Atlanta

No mystery as to his motivation for jumping ship then.
I don't think Thomas will look completely incompetent now that he's left the Suns' offense but as iKe7in noted he's demonstrated in the past that he'll mail it in once he's secured a big payday. Still, as a replacement for Radmanovic he'll still get minutes and touches. Radmanovic attempted 8 field goals (including 5 threes) per game for the Clippers while Thomas put up 9 shots (4 from beyond the arc) per game for the Suns.

Crap... Nash sure is the real MVP, play with him and get incredible stats then get a nice good contract. Who's next this season going through this Nash-Machine?
