Who will become a better player in their prime.
Two beasts out of school who are extremely athletic and incredible dunkers. Dwight Howard is only 20 where Amare is 22. Amare has made bigger strides since his move from high school but Dwight Howard is a monster who can only improve and may have a breakout year next season.
Hard decision but it comes down to one thin in my opinion: Amare's injury
I'm taking Amare because he is with a team like the Suns with fantastic players around him in Steve Nash, Shawn Marion and Boris Diaw.

I think Dwight Howard because he dominates against many players, and his shot blocking skills are uncanny. He is younger and he is going to have a good rookie hopefully morrison to be his sidekick and those two together would be incredible. I also think Dwight could become a prime KG in his prime.

Taking Amare's injury out of the equation, he would eat Dwight Howard alive in every conceivable way except rebounding.
Sat Jun 24, 2006 12:50 am
Amare, reason being because he's got better post play, better blocker just can't rebound as well.
If Amare could develop a 3 point scoring skill like Dirk he would be a never-ending force.

amare.... i think perhaps mentally more mature, and thus more confident. he didnt seem like a kid when he came out of high school, i was certain he was just a really stupid old guy who got left back.

Just to remind you I'm taking about prime - Dwight Howard still has a lot more room to improve on his game but I agree that Amare has the better all-orund game.

You must ask yourselves where you'd see dwight howard on the suns. He's got the speed and athleticism to run the floor like Amare, and he doesnt have a knee injury, but he cant shoot jumpshots as well.
He is much stronger though, he benches more than anyone on the team and hes more stocky. I think if he can develop a strong jump shot and good low post repatoir he'll be better. He was taken 1st overall for a reason. I think we'd have to see nash throwing fantastic alley oops to howard to have a truly even comparison though.

Look at the opposite also. Amare would lead Orlando better than Dwight and can create more for himself than Dwight. Orlando may be a few spots higher in the Eadst if Amare was on the Magic roster.
Sat Jun 24, 2006 1:54 am
I wonder how tall Howard is. He was measured out at 6'9 1/4'' at the predraft camp and he said that was his still his height during this past season, but Magic say that he's actually over 6'11. IMO, he was just bullshitting to persuade somebody, anybody that he should play like KG at the PF position.
Darko was 7'1 in shoes at the predraft camp. Him next to DH:

Dwight Howard.....since he's already a better defender, a top 5 rebounder in the league and with his power & strength mixed with his speed he can become an unstoppable force. His offense needs some moves and some range, but i'm always inclined to take the better defender.
Sat Jun 24, 2006 8:03 am
Amare seems like the better offensive player but Dwight is the better rebounder. I think Dwight just needs a bit more touches on offense and he'd produce similar numbers to Stoudemire.
Sat Jun 24, 2006 8:14 am
If Orlando have Nash , Howard's numbers will improve . I think a part of Amare's numbers its by Nash's great playmaker skills .
I think Amare its better now , but maybe Howard in the future mature a bit and
like Its_asdf say : " needs a bit more touches on offense " .
I think both players are a strange mix of Garnett and Shaq .
Sat Jun 24, 2006 9:55 am
I'm taking Dwight Howard due to Amare's injury....even without it, I'd still probably take Howard....
Sat Jun 24, 2006 1:06 pm
I'd definately take Howard, Amare has way more support yet Howard still puts up monster numbers.

problem is that he wont

yeah, imagine Shaq with a 12ft jump shot....crazy.
Both are good scorers with limited offensive moves atm, once they improve they'll be harder to stop.

HOW CAN YOU ASK WHITCH WILL BE BETTER IN THEIR PRIME IF THEY BOTH HAVEN"T REACHED IT AND ARE FAR FROM IT? INJURIES AND OTHER CLAUSES WILL BE THE FACTORS.

HES ASKING WHO YOU THINK WILL BE BETTER WHEN THEY REACH THEIR PRIME

Agreed
I was going to post the same thing.

i believe he wants a prediction

Right now: A healthy Amare is quicker and more explosive. He has better post moves and a much better jumpshot (from the top of the key, both elbows). He can drive better. He uses his strength better. Howard jumps higher, is taller, longer and stronger, although he doesn't use his psychical advantage nearly as much as he could and should. He is slightly better on defense (although still just average), a better blocker and superior rebounder.
In their primes: if Amare returns to 90% of his previous explosivness, he'll be dominant again. He has superior body control and probably more potential to develop a very effective inside/outside game, as the speed of improvement of his ballhandling skills and jumpshot proves. He'll probably never be a dominant rebounder and shotblocker, simply because he lacks length and instincts for it, but with his natural strength could develop into a superb man defender.
Dwight Howard is certainly going to add a jumpshot (fadaways, shot from both elbows, top of the key) to his game and use his first step more, but his bread and butter will always be his post game. I expect him to show a couple of new moves next season and something new with every season passed and he'll sooner or later become the baddest inside presence since Hakeem. He won't be as skilled, but strength advantage and sheer athleticism will make up for that. He also projects to be a much better defender than Amare. Like him, he doesn't have great shotblocking instincts, but he has enough tools to gradually improve that area of his game and top 2bpg. He'll be the best rebounder in the League for the next 10 or so years.
Advantage: Dwight (a close call).

Dwight Howard to me would never be like a 25ppg 15rpg, 4apg 4bpg kinda guy... dominate defensively, score a lot...
Amare is more like ( if healthy ) and in his prime, 30+ppg, 10rpg, 2bpg kinda guy..
Dwight Howard seems like a way bigger presences defensively, and i think he is good enough offensively/athleticly to get to David Robinson's level of offense..
Amare can score a crap load, he can shoot jumpers, hes quicker..
