It's hard to believe that despite an Australian being taken at no 1 at last years NBA draft, we still don't have decent NBA coverage.
When Yao Ming got picked 1st a few years ago, China went craazy with the NBA.
Sun May 28, 2006 5:03 pm
I signed the shit out of it, it'd be great to have NBATV, I'd watch it everyday of the season.

Thats probably because you have many other sports that have much bigger markets and audiences whereas China has never had a sport they dominate in outright or have great success in (table tennis?), at least sports that are played worldwide.
It would be the same if one of your boys started playing rugby or australian football (is that what its called?) and was drafted 1st overall or became a star, it's unlikely stations are going to make a big deal out of it here and show countless amounts of rugby or australian football games.
But Im all for people getting more NBA games but its pointless for me to sign a petition thats for Australians.

Have you ever watched the olympics? China's medal count has been in the top3 for a quite a while now. It's not really about how china don't dominate in a particular sports, it's that they don't have a big league like the NBA. And you are right about Australia having other sports that they can cheer for like Rugby, i assume they have a pretty big league over there.
Sun May 28, 2006 5:58 pm
Australia has three main dominant sports, those being AFL, cricket and rugby league... then you've got your second tier like rugby union and soccer, then other things people bandwagon like swimming, tennis, hockey, volleyball etc... basketball fits in there somewhere.
Why didn't Sit post it himself?
Sun May 28, 2006 5:58 pm
That's pretty much the case, basketball doesn't get a lot of respect in Australia primarily because of the popularity of other sports and I think to a certain extent because we haven't had much success in international competition, not to mention our pro league has several problems.
I've signed the petition though I must admit I'm not all that optimistic as I'm pretty sure online petitions don't have a great success rate. But hey, it can't hurt to try and if it helps in the endeavour to get NBA TV as part of Australian pay TV packages, great.
Sun May 28, 2006 6:08 pm
I signed it even though I'm not from Australia. I feel the same pain that you Aussies do - the local cable company here doesn't offer NBA League Pass or NBA TV.

since I haven't been on MSN in a while I'm just assuming this, but I'd imagine he didn't post it himself because some smartass (not suggesting anybody, but no doubt it would happen) would come in & say that they knew Sit would be back & all that garbage & possibly spam up the thread....
on topic, I signed the petition....

Sun May 28, 2006 11:39 pm
i'm pretty sure that if this NBA TV venture was profitable enough then it would already be availabale or in the works. I doubt that an on-line petition will have any impact.
Although it'd be great if we had 1 or 2 more extra games a week.
Sun May 28, 2006 11:54 pm
yea I'm an American signer because i have nba tv and it's great so i think you guys need it too.

The olympics is a mixed bag, medals come in various events and only events that are of public recogntion in terms of domination are probably track and field(our boys) and swimming(shared between our boys and Australia) and then shooting is debatable as a major grouping but I think India does well in that category. Plus none of China's medals come in sports you see having popularity and large scale audiences outside the olympics. They suck in basketball, are near half decent in soccer and well most other major worlwide watched sports. Sure they may win athletics medals, table tennis, badmington and so on but those aren't sports that get huge airplay or have commercial success and are unlikely to attract sponsors and revenue if showed on air frequently due their relatively poor audience in comparison to major sports.
I mean while our domination in track and field is quite clear it doesnt get the same kind of yearly audience and promotion and sponsorship our four major leagues get (You ask 100 kids who they rather be, Michael Johnson or LeBron James and 99 of them will tell you James) . China's following for Yao is more of them being proud of him cause he's probably the most popular and known Chinese person in the world next to only Jacky Chang possibly (but he's from Hong Kong). Plus unlike Australia they don't have any world reknown sportsperson that they can be truly proud of besides Yao and basketball is a team sport and team sports always tend to earn more revenue and have larger fan bases than individual sports.

To all the replies to my comments, "Fair enough."
But think about it, an Australian gets picked at no 1 in the NBA draft. Even though basketball isn't the most dominant sport in Australia, we Australians still like sports of all kinds. I think that any Australian that breaks into a sport in another country gets massive support, whether it is baseball, NFL (Ex-cat Ben Graham is playing with some team) or in this case, basketball.
Wouldn't the NBA be seeking to expand and globalise, as it is doing with China and European countries? My friend says that there used to be a NBA television show a few years back. I'd be more than happy for a half hour NBA show every night or every few nights after the news, or during a non-ratings time slot.
