yeah definately Gerald Wallace, he missed out completely...wtf?
Well done to Camby too

The Kidd and Kobe selections really do seem like reputation picks. I wouldn't have considered them First Team All-Defensive but I'm hardly outraged. I too think Gerald Wallace should've at least made the Second Team. The fact he missed a significant amount of games no doubt went against him with DPOY and fair enough, but averaging 7.5 rebounds (5.3 defensive) 2.5 steas and 2.1 blocks over 55 games still seems worthy of All-Defensive Team honours to me. I know stats aren't everything but such numbers are a rarity that deserve recognition.

Kidd was awesome on defense this year, don't bash him. Kobe left his defense in the year of 2003, though.
Sat May 13, 2006 1:00 am
I wasn't bashing him, I just don't think this year was one of his stronger bids for the All-Defensive First Team.

But which guards did deserve consideration to be taken over Kidd? Bell? Hinrich? Billups? Terry? Hassell? From those, I think only Hassell is noticably better than Kidd and he didn't have as much of an impact as JK did (as illogical as that sounds). From the 1-on-1 standpoint, this was one of Kidd's best years, IMO.

if only Lindsey Hunter was a starter......i would have prefered Rasheed over Prince....Rasheed is easily a better defender.

i agree, he gets overlooked every year.
on another note i think kidd sealed defensive first team honors when he shut down nash and billups on consecutive nights. now that's just cool

Kirk Hinrich = best defensive PG in the league.
Chris Duhon, Shane Battier, Quinton Ross. I'm a little confused as to how Kobe made first team with his lack of conssitent defense this season.
lebron James & Gilbert Arenas both received a FIRST PLACE vote

I guess i'm a little confused about why Gerald Wallace would have his injuries working against him, causin him to miss games, since Artest was out for pretty much the entire first half of the season
But I'm content with these defensive team picks, for the most part.

well Artest improved the defense of the Kings tremendously & he got them to the playoffs, i'm sure that was a pretty big factor.

Nash should've gotten a place over Kidd.

Looks like All Defensive Team is becoming a popularity contest like all the other awards.
Shame.

i totally agree, what i meant to say was that missing games shouldn't be counted against a person
Sat May 13, 2006 3:52 pm
Kobe shouldn't of been there. Marion should of made it in one of the teams. Camby should be in 1st. Kidd, Zo, should be in 2nd team.
Sat May 13, 2006 5:22 pm
i don't think Kidd's selection was based on reputation. He played good D all year and he's still a top notch defender.

On top of the positive effect he had on Sacramento, Artest does have a reputation as one of the league's top defenders so coaches probably made allowances for him when casting their votes.
Sun May 14, 2006 4:10 pm
I disagree with the guards on that team, and think Gerald Wallace should be on that team.
Sun May 14, 2006 4:31 pm
Q Ross got a vote.
Mon May 15, 2006 1:14 am
the thing about Artest though, is he got traded for Peja.....if Kings got a decent defender their defense would have improved anyway. Not as much as with Artest, but certainly 2ppg.

Anthony Johnson dropped 40 on Jason kidd this year. Awesome defense huh? I bet some people dont even know what team Anthony Johnson plays for.
Also, opponent stats per 48 minutes according to 82games.com
Kidd at PG gives up 17.2 points at an efg of 48%
Mon May 15, 2006 8:07 pm
those stats aren't reliable. how are they assessing those numbers? do they average out the points in the entire season of the person jason kidd is supposed to guard? so many things happen in the course of the game (substitutions, switches, etc) that may cause his assignment to light up; doesn't necessarily mean it's his fault.
Mon May 15, 2006 8:07 pm
so how do they calculate those stats?
Mon May 15, 2006 8:15 pm
Anthony freakin Johnson dropped 40 on him. Let me guess, that stat still aint reliable?
It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out how to get the average number of points a player gives up. If i recall correctly, i learned how to compute for an average back in elementary.
EFG is basically field goal percentage adjusted for 3 point shots.

1 game doesn't make a guy a bad defender. Also, you haven't explained HOW they calculate the average.....looking at how many points the other PG scored is totally innacurate given the differences in minutes, the role of the opposing player on his team, who Kidd actually guards (he guards 2-guards as well)
Sounds to me like that stat does not calculate whom Kidd guards but whoever is playing the opposing PG spot.
Oh, he's the best rebounding PG too.

thats what i was getting at, thanks for pointing it out.
laker socks, just because jason kidd plays point guard does not mean he guards the opposing PG. like i mentioned before, just because anthony johnson dropped 40 points on "him", doesn't make him a bad defender. if you watch basketball, you know that you don't stick with one guy the whole time. there are so many instances in the game where you have to rotate and rely on other people to defend him. as well, when you rest, you need other people to defend him as well.
to take your argument into perspective, kareem rush, who played SG for the Lakers dropped 21? (6 three pointers) on the Timberwolves in the Western Conference Semis two years ago. trenton hassell played SG for the Wolves that season too. now, does that make hassell a bad defender simply because he plays SG and the opposing SG lit the entire team up? hell no.
