The Nuggets and general manager Kiki Vandeweghe have mutually agreed to part ways, according to Kroenke Sports Enterprises.

"After meeting with Kiki today, we agreed his contract will not be extended," said owner, Stan Kroenke, in a statement. "We appreciate the time he spent with the Nuggets and wish him good luck as he seeks out his next challenge."

"I am truly grateful to Mr. Kroenke for the opportunity he gave me and for everything I have learned from this experience," said Vandeweghe, in the statement. "I am excited about moving in a new direction."

"We remain focused on attaining our goal of establishing a team that consistently competes at the highest levels and will make every effort to achieve that goal," said Kroenke.

Speculation on Vandeweghe's future with the team has been rampant.

Vandeweghe, hired Aug. 9, 2001, led the franchise back to the playoffs after an eight-year drought. But the team's inability to make it out of the first round in the past three playoffs - especially this season - led to huge disappointment among players, ownership and fans.

The Nuggets are expected to pay Vandeweghe the remainder of his contract, which expires Aug. 1.

Every player on the Nuggets' current roster was signed by Vandeweghe, including Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby, whom the team acquired with Nene in a 2002 draft-night deal for Antonio McDyess. The team also received late-season boosts from deadline deals that brought Eduardo Najera in 2005 and Reggie Evans and Ruben Patterson this spring.

The general manager's draft record has not been as strong. Much has been made of his decision to twice bypass eventual rookie of the year Amare Stoudemire in favor of Nikoloz Tskitishvili and Nene in 2002. Nene developed into a productive player, but Tskitishvili struggled before being traded to the Golden State Warriors in February 2005.

He has been criticized because none of his second-round picks have worked. With the exceptions of Anthony and Nene, no Nuggets draft pick during Vandeweghe's tenure has made a major impact on the team.

He has also been criticized for his inability to provide the roster with enough outside shooting, a weakness exposed in three consecutive 4-1 first-round playoff losses. The Nuggets were also resistant to discipline at times under his watch. Ex-coach Jeff Bzdelik once tried to suspend Anthony for refusing to re-enter a game, but the front office did not back him.

Another strike against Vandeweghe in Kroenke's eyes was his public dalliance with Cleveland when the Cavaliers had a G.M. opening last summer.

Fissures between the owner and Vandeweghe first surfaced in the summer of 2003, over the failure to sign Golden State free agent Gilbert Arenas, who eventually became an all-star with Washington.

Tensions also arose during the tenure of Bzdelik, who guided Denver to the initial postseason appearance of the current regime. The GM had hoped to replace Bzdelik after that season, but Kroenke would not approve the move.

Instead, the Nuggets fired Bzdelik after a slow start the following season, and went 4-10 under the interim coach Vandeweghe chose, Michael Cooper. In January, 2005, the Nuggets opted for George Karl, their current coach, at Kroenke's urging.

Vandeweghe was a longshot hire when Kroenke tabbed him to run his team on Aug. 9, 2001. Only 43 at the time, his two

years as an assistant coach and director of player development in Dallas marked his lone stint in an NBA front office.
He was tested immediately, steering the franchise through a public relations storm after coach Dan Issel made a racially insensitive remark to a Hispanic fan during Vandeweghe's first season.

On the positive side, Vandeweghe engineered one of the largest salary dumps in league history during his first season - jettisoning the long, expensive contracts of Nick Van Exel, Raef LaFrentz, Avery Johnson and Tariq Abdul-Wahad. The move hurt the Nuggets in the short term, as they won 17 games in 2002-03.

But it also cleared the salary cap space that Denver would use to attract free agents Andre Miller, Earl Boykins and Kenyon Martin and the re-signing of Camby to a team that has made the playoffs the past three seasons after an eight-year drought. The team captured its first division crown since 1988 this spring.

Vandeweghe, a man as likely to read a book on history or philosophy as anything sports-related, often brought a non-linear approach to his job. When he first arrived to a team that could have used an infusion of cash, he briefly considered selling the naming rights of the team itself, though the Denver Qwest never came close to existing.

He also took a hands-on approach to off-court issues. Before the Nuggets switched uniforms for the 2003-04 season, he researched which colors would sell best. Anthony's presence has certainly helped, but Denver's baby-blue uniforms have sold well since their debut.

With the Nuggets at their lowest point, Vandeweghe worked hard to win back fans with promotions like a public tryout for Denver's summer league team. He also consistently tried to align his team with military, police and fire organizations in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy.

He had his lows and highs, but I think he was a solid GM.

You're an idiot. He did much more good than bad.......
He developed the WORST team in the league into a respectable organisation. 3 years ago they were just a bunch of scrubs, Kiki, brought in some solid trades and free-agents. The Martin deal wasn't great but hey, name one other terrible thing he did...

I'd say his best move was signing Dermarr Johnson. That guy is a god. :headbang: 8-)

Edit: I have to agree with Carmo on this one. He's done some bad moves, but most of the time they were just moves that simply backfired on him.

Oh yeah, and another bad thing he did was he drafted Tskitishvili or however you spell it. Other than Melo and Nene (and he could have gotten Amare), he hasn't made too many good draft choices.

He wasn't the only one who passed on Amare. Hindsight is 20/20

Kiki was a good GM, and had it not been for injuries, the Nuggets would probably have finished with 50 wins this year.

^ Kiki's good, but I don't think they had a chance at 50 wins.

He brought in good players, they just screwed up the team on their own like Kenyon Martin.

his biggest problem was his inability to find a shooter. That spelled doom from the get go.

i dont really know much about our ex-GM, but by the sound of it, he wasn't too bad at all, at the time i'm sure all the decsions he made were legit and we cant really go back now and say he shouldn't of done that.

He also drafted Melo, and although he passed on Amare, he also managed to get Nene. Like someone earlier stated, a ton of teams passed on Amare, and I doubt anyone who passed on him would have thought that he would turn out to be the monster that he is right now.

The Nugget's backcourt went from utter trash to a very solid one after they acquired Miller and Boykins, and he also got Reggie Evans (a solid rebounder when he isn't chasing after a guy's nuts) and Ruben Patterson (a solid defender and an upgrade on offence over Buckner). Marcus Camby was another fantastic pick up for the basketball team too.

The article said that everyone on their current roster is/was signed by Vandeweghe, and looking at Denver's roster, they're a solid playoff team with a solid young player as their go-to guy.

K-Mart looked like a decent pick-up, and although I don't think he was worth investing the money in the first place, he was a great interior defender and could score a tad bit as well.

So all in all, Vandeweghe turned Denver from a joke to a playoff team that has gotten into the playoffs three consecutive years.

Before you go off and calling someone an idiot, make sure you don't come across as one.

Ok then.........
So you think a GM that brought in the pieces to turn a team, that had the worst record in the league, into at least a 40 win team the last 3 seasons has done a crap job? Hence, me calling you an idiot in my first post....

I think he's a pretty good GM, if we compare him to others around the League. I read an article about him how he's great at running the whole organization and how much we worries about detailes and how much work he put in designing new Denver jerseys (which are one of the best 'new' jerseys in the League, IMO). I think 76ers/Hawks/Lakers/Timberwolves/Celtics/Knicks/(...) would be all glad to get him. Sure, signing Martin for that awful contract was a bad deal, but we are talking about a guy who was a second best player on a team who played twice in the Finals and was reportedly a very good person. He was also very athletic, with some potential left, and a good defender, which is exactly what teams in the West need, to fight against Duncans and Garnetts. Thing is, he was already injury prone and nobody else actually wanted him, so I didn't see the point of signing him for a max contract. Kiki also didn't succeed in bringing a decent SG to compliment Anthony and drafted relatively poorly, but still - there are much worse GMs than him.

Even the best GMs make mistakes from time to time and while I wouldn't call Kiki Vandeweghe one of the best he's hardly been terrible. He certainly had some failings, the inability to shore up the outside attack and not standing by the head coach being two that stand out, but a horrible GM does not make moves that allow a team to go from the bottom of the league to respectability and three straight Playoff appearances. Besides, he wouldn't be the first GM to overlook a player of Amare's calibre and not the only GM to do so in that very draft.

It's unfortunate that he has to take the fall for the team not getting further than they would like despite the fact they've improved greatly since Kiki first took the job. That said, perhaps it is time to bring in someone who can take them to the next level and build upon the team already in place.

Why do people keep saying "signing Martin for that contract was a bad deal" when KMart was acquired for like 3 Second rounders?

He was sign&traded for 3 FIRST rounders and for deal the Nuggets wanted to give him. I don't know what exactly is your point or how would that be an excuse for a bad contract of his. If anything, that makes his signing look only worse.

But in terms of talent, the Nuggets still won that deal. The Nets of course have made things work despite sending their former starting power forward away for picks but that's mostly thanks to their good fortune through the Vince Carter situation.

as for Kiki, I thought he did a great job as GM of Denver....

- he traded away a hobbled McDyess for Nene & a 1st Rder....
- traded for Camby....
- he got Kenyon Martin for a few 1st Rd draft picks (Martin could have potentially made or broke this team....he did the latter, but that's not on Kiki....I didn't think Kenyon was a max player, but when guys like Zach & Carlos get max, that's why Kenyon does too)....
- he drafted Carmelo (was the right pick for them)....
- signed Earl Boykins
- traded for Ruben Patterson

unfortunately Kiki could not add a SG to complement Carmelo....someone like Cuttino would've been nice, but ahh well....

Kiki did a great job transforming them from cellar dwellers to a division champion for years to come (if they build on their core)....

...and he got Karl who is a pretty good coach, who turned this team into a decent one last (and this season). Kiki is not responsible for Carmelo being a choker, for all the injures or that Martin suddenly became a cancer.

problem was that it didn't help with their shooting....even with Lenard they only had the 1 3pnt shooter.

he got Camby, Nene & Martin....too bad all 3 are injury prone and unreliable.

You can't even choose which team/player to support and prolly just jumped on the Melo/Nuggets bandwagon when they started winning.

He wasnt an A grade GM nor was he an Isaiah or Babcock, he had to turnaround a hard situation and he did that A OK in my opinion. Sure he passed on Amare but so did quite a few teams and Amare was never labelled as one of the best prospects in that draft either cause he had his background issues to go with his unknown commodity status. K-Mart backfired and that took the shine of his resume and also the signing of Watson didnt make alot of sense but they did trade him for something good if not decent so I guess its a 50/50 judgement.

I agree, he'll prolly be able to do a much better job with NYK than Mr.Thomas has done or is doing right now.

Funnily enough, if Kiki did take over in New York he'd once again be joining the front office of a club he once played for. Whoever succeeds Isiah Thomas whenever his tenure comes to a close will likely have a tough job ahead of him. Even the likes of Jerry West and Rod Thorn would have a hard time moving some of those contracts and steering the team back on track.
