Bosh will sign with Raptors

DOUG SMITH
SPORTS REPORTER

Raptors fans got the four words they wanted from all-star forward Chris Bosh today: "I'll gladly come back," Bosh said, confirming he'll sign a lucrative six-year contract extension this summer.

The 22-year-old said he reached his decision after meeting Thursday morning with president and general manager Bryan Colangelo, and being convinced that the new GM can turn around the fortunes of the struggling franchise.

Bosh will be the centrepiece of the team as it tries to move into prominence in the eastern conference. The Raptors finished the season Wednesday night in Chicago, losing to the Bulls to finish with 27 wins and 55 losses, their fourth successive year out of the playoffs.

"My whole thing is 'why not?' " said Bosh, who as a three-year pro was entering into an offseason in which the Raptors had exclusive negotiating rights. "I have a chance to have my own team, be a leader on the team and challenge myself to bring it back up."

Excellent news that Raps can keep him. He's deffinately a franchise player, and soon to be the East's best PF.

Hopefully Raps put the right pieces areound him.

I agree. The Raptors have potential to be a good team in the next couple years, and this re-signing is excellent news. :headbang:

 I'm praying to God he pulls a Boozer or something.

Fri Apr 21, 2006 5:43 am

Don't think he wants to go to LA because he wants to be a leader of a team and currently, Kobe is theirs so yeah... TORONTOOOOOOOOO RAPTORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fri Apr 21, 2006 5:45 am

 Keep dreaming hipn, Lakers are gonna steal him away from yall.

L.A. LAAKEEEEEERS!!!!!!!!

Fri Apr 21, 2006 5:56 am

He'd get more money (commercials) and recognition in LA, so I think he has a pretty good reason to go there.

Fri Apr 21, 2006 6:47 am

Now I can sleep with peace. Haha

The lakers still have waived salary from Brian Grant, and that's gonna put them well over the cap for the next 2- 3 years. So i don't think the lakers have a chance go sign a big star any time soon, unless they decided to do a sign and trade. The only person who's worth that much other than Kobe is Lamar or Kwame. On top of that Bosh will be restricted FA, so Raptors will have a chance to match it, and they will.... unless Bosh pulls a Joe Johnson on them, or Boozer.

Let's hope he won't

Rush aint a PG yo. He can play but that ain't his position kid.

Fri Apr 21, 2006 7:27 am

Kareem wouldnt be that much help. Have you seen him play?

Play what? Madden on his XBOX? Because not in the NBA he can't...

Fri Apr 21, 2006 12:14 pm

Its still not for sure, but I'm glad he's displayed some optimism in signing with the Raptors. :headbang:

First of all, he's just another shot happy three point chucker with out much defence, and secondly, he's a shooting guard and the Raptors have plenty.

I think the Raptors are in need of a starting point guard until Calderon develops a tad bit more, but the point guard spot isn't really anything to worry about.

Fri Apr 21, 2006 1:58 pm

why isn't the PG spot anything to worry about. Right now you have an inexperienced player (calderon) and a shoot first PG starting. What ya'll need is someone to give Bosh the ball, not take it away from him.

That's a bit of a contradictory statement. If the Raptors are in need of a point guard spot, why is it not anything to worry about? I'm glad we have a pass-first player in Calderon, and we might be able to get Ukic, but we need somebody developed and experienced that can pass first. Then again, there's not many pass-first point guards in the league.

I love Nash and Kidd.

Pass-first point guards might be overrated. Name the last one to win a title...

Kidd and Stockton are guys that almost got them to the crowned glory in recent years. Magic Johnson comes to mind... ;)

Fri Apr 21, 2006 3:43 pm

So...1988? Almost two decades?

Look, I'm not saying that "pass-first" point guards can't help a team like Kidd, Nash, Stockton habe, but these guys were more than simply "pass-first" point guards. Nash and Stockton are both super efficient individual offensive players, guys who regularly rank at the top of the league. And Kidd was one of the greatest defenders in the league when he supposidly turned the Nets around with his "passing" (it was really his defense that turned the Nets around)

Throw in Magic and you have guys who are superstars who aren't just pass-first but also had long stints as the best player at his position. I mean we named Magic-Stockton-Kidd-Nash which basically only leaves out Payton as the top point guards in the league at one point and time over the last two decades.

Look at the assist ratio leaders for this season:
Snow, Knight, Nash, Kidd, Duhon, Ridnour, Miller, Billups, Paul, Ollie, Arroyo, and Alston, then nobody assists on more than 30% of possessions (FINE. FINE! T.J. Ford is at 29.7) we have Nash and Billups as super offensive guys, Paul and Kidd as top five players at their spot. A guy like Snow, Duhon, Ridnour or Ollie aren't going to help the Raptors just because they're pass-first.

What the Raptors would need is a good point guard more than simply a pass-first point guard right? However, they can live with James/Calderon. James was a team player his entire career, he had a contract year on a team that's season was over so I'll give him a pass for now.

I think the Raptors really need to look at the wing more than the point. Look at this: http://www.82games.com/positions.htm Remember, PER difference showing up as the biggest individual correlation with win % we know of. Dead last at SF, 20th at SG. Yeah, they were 17th and thus below average at PF, but Charlie V should improve them above 15th there.

Wing, then Center. Center maybe even more than wing, as then they can slide Bosh and Charlie down thus improving the forward slots.

I know all the Raptors fans are blaming Mike James for taking advantage of his situation, but if he goes and you're stuck with Calderon next year as your only option at the point you will be missing his production (though maybe not his attitude or personality)

That said, I would certaintly not pay too much for a 30 year old point guard who had a better year than ever, if he wants too much I'd let him go. But $4 mill or less a year for three years, maybe even four years would be acceptable.

Resigning Bosh was a must. I was going to contend with "and soon to be the East's best PF." but I can't. The guy is already the East's best PF. Even if his defense is quite disappointing.

If they buyout Araujo and don't give him an extension I'm loving the Raptors situation, defense is the easier than offense to find. It's certainly better than it was at this time last year.

It's certaintly not the Knicks, who are apparently courting Jared Jeffries with their mid-level.

Apologies for typos/rambling, I may or may not be intoxicated after getting home from being out with friends.

You're forgetting Darko, benji.

Fri Apr 21, 2006 4:07 pm

Who plays center...alongside Bosh's biggest challenger in Dwight Howard...

Fri Apr 21, 2006 4:27 pm

Nothing much to add to what's been said already, except that on top of being great news for the Raptors it's nice to see a young player commit to making a situation better, in era where players will stop trying or just play for stats when things are bleak.
