Random GTA Talk Thread

Postby Andrew on Sat Apr 08, 2006 12:31 am

I know we've got a few specific Grand Theft Auto threads going at the moment but I thought I'd create one for the entire series for the purpose of any random discussion/advice/opinions and so on.

To kick it off...what do you think has been the best addition to the series during the span of GTA3 to San Andreas?

There's a lot of things to choose from obviously, but today I'm going to pick out a subtle one; the ability to skip forward in a mission when reattempting it in San Andreas, having successfully completed the first (easier) phase. The mission where you first meet Jeffrey (OG Loc) for example. If you fail the motorbike chase part of the mission, when you attempt the mission again you have the option of skipping the first part where you drive to the police station and pick him up.

I think that's a great idea, being able to skip the easy part and getting back to attempting the core of the mission. Because let's face it, by that point in the game whether you're experienced or new to the series you've probably figured out how to drive from here to there using the radar and it's a couple of minutes off the time.

I like it because I find my attempts that follow a really good attempt that came close to finishing the mission never seem to go as well because I'm frustrated and trying to get back to where I was as quickly as possible. Skipping the easy stuff, I'm free to concentrate on a better strategy for the harder part.

I've gone back to playing Vice City recently for a bit of variety, I'm up to the mission where you have to rescue Lance Vance from the junkyard. Having been wasted after looking like getting to the easier final task, I've been wishing I could skip the drive from Kent Paul to the junkyard so I can just keep trying new strategies and finally get past it.

So...your thoughts on some of your favourite improvements? They don't need to be huge, they can be subtle, like the mission "fast forward" in San Andreas.

yeah same here andrew.. and that mission with zero in san andreas, supply lines..my god the horror. I got through the flying missions alright using the keyboard, but still cant do supply lines, took me 5 hours of straight playing on ps2 to beat that.

gta4 should be exciting though.

I find I struggle on missions that require stealth, I'm usually too impatient to get it over and done with and move on in the story.

The most trouble I had with SA was that mission that you had to get onto a plane with a motorcycle. I had to slow the game down to get it :x

In VC, I couldn't fly that damn water-plane in the Studio missions :x

I liked all the San Andreas missions in the hood. The country missions, desert missions, were absolutely pointless to the storyline and made no sense and were too hard. I mean, the game never really made a clear explanation how Toreno survived the explosion of the helicopter, and why does CJ have to do missions for Toreno to get Sweet out of jail when he has enough experience and carnage to just break into prison and get Sweet out of there? It would be tough, but I'd rather do that over and over again rather than go through those tortorous plane missions. (N)

I've never played any of them on PC since GTA2. Actually, we used to play that one a bit over the network in IT class back in Year 11.

since this thread IS called RANDOM GTA talk, might as well post random thoughts. Anyone else think Woozie from San Andreas is one of the coolest characters of the series?

oh, and also, has anyone heard anything about Liberty City Stories (the psp version of GTA) being available for the PS2? I think i read that somewhere on IGN or something, with a possibility of it being sold at greatest hits price too :D

I've heard it will be released on PS2 as well, though kind of odd since the setting is a re-hash of GTA3.

no, not like gta 3, its like just the PSP GTA game ported to PS2. Liberty City Stories is not just a complete port from GTA 3.

Flying school's actually pretty easy with keyboard/mouse... I stopped playing because it forced me to take over xxxxx number of turfs before i can continue on with the storyline (N)

I believe they are the full versions. I remember the original GTA demo was nowhere near a 328 MB download.

I suppose they figure they're not going to make much money of it, most people who download it will do so for nostalgia or to have a version that works properly in Windows XP (though it's been ages since I played GTA1 and GTA2, so I can't remember if there were any issues with XP to begin with).

I think it stands the test of time. Maybe not in the sense that it hasn't been surpassed but it's one of those games you can go back and play for a bit of nostalgia.
