Whats the deal with Ivey?

Royal Ivey starts every game for Atlanta, but doesnt even play 14 minutes a game. What is the point of him starting, when he plays such limited minutes?

Maybe because he is going to die, and this is his last wish. To start for one of the worst teams in the L.

I guess he's a fairly stable player... nothing flash, just does his job moderately ok. The bench PG's are more shot jacking psychotic types so I suppose they want the stable start to the game with Ivey. That being said, I've seen like 2 Hawks games this year.

If he is good, then why not play him for more minutes? Is he severely unfit or something

He's not good. He has no point guard skills.

@ Jae. I like him, yeah. I like how he sucked in college, and got his nba contract because he works hard on defense. I just like players like that. Wouldn't say he's a hero though. Or favourite player.

I've never cared for that philosophy myself, starting the inferior player and then giving him minimal minutes anyway. Seems to me if you deem another player superior then they should be the ones starting. Any good that Ivey can do starting is surely going to be minimal and quickly negated since he's yanked so early and rides the bench most of the game.

remember.. Ha Seung-Jin used to start for Portland and played like less than 10 minutes if I remember correctly

That was only four games out of 24 though, not quite the same as Ivey's 60 of the 67 games he's appeared in thus far.

But like I said, that effect is surely minimal or negated since he doesn't play much the rest of the way.

Sometimes 14 minutes is all it takes to knock a player off his game, though the Hawks record would indicate it never works. I still think it's a matter of stability.

I suppose. I'm still not a huge fan of the philosophy though, I prefer the idea of putting the best possible lineup out there to start the game. Not necessarily the five best players as there's merits in keeping the bench stable with sixth men and capable reserves but someone who's only good for 14 minutes doesn't really strike me as starter material.
