Josh Smith

Sun Mar 26, 2006 5:10 pm

I've been following J-Smoove for the past few weeks and I have noticed a pattern in his shooting. First of all, he usually doesn't take many threes and only shot 17% last year shooting the trey. But what I have noticed over the past month is that he is shooting it a lot more often and making it a lot more often. Even though at the beginning of the year he wasn't shooting them at all, he has shot 20 of them over the past 5 games. His stats on the shooting is terrific going

Past 5 Games
1/3 3PT
4/6 3PT
1/3 3PT
2/4 3PT
2/4 3PT

He shot 50% from three point range over the last 5 games going 10/20. Will this start a new trend for J-Smoove and will it become the turning point in his career? This could open up a whole lot of other options for him and could develop his game like it was supposed to be developed this year. He had a lot of expectations this year and didn't really live up to them.

What do you think?

That's one of the few good things about playing for a shit team like Atlanta, the younger guys get to develop new skills while they're actually playing. If they were fighting for a play-off spot there's no way they'd say "Ok go out there and launch 4 three's per game", but because their season is basically over they players are allowed to go out there and try a few different things.

Portland is another example, Zach Randolph shot 5 three's or something like that against Milwaukee the other day, and the coaching staff said they wanted him to do it.

In the game, I have Smith at 23/34 after 10 games from behind 3 with 22 rating. I am used to his shooting action and the computers don't stand up and challenge shots.

Needless to say, it would be to his advantage to expand his game since ultimately that will make him a much more dangerous opponent and also give him some tools to fall back when his athleticism starts to fade down the road. I agree with Jae, with the season all but decided (ping-pong balls in the lottery the only thing left to consider) it's a smart idea to let the young players develop on the fly and try out new strategies that they might want to implement next year.

Surpisingly enough, Randolph has been making a lot of them too.

I don't know if many of you have seen any high-school footage of Josh Smith, but he actually shot threes there. OK, the line's closer and the oppenents are below average most of the time, but it's about the shot right?

Yeah, I've read a few scouting reports on Josh before he got drafted and they said that he has solid mechanics and has the potential to become a very respectable shooter.

I don't really know about Josh's work ethic though...

How many of them were pure luck, probably 8 or 9! He isa dunker, not a 3pt shooter!

Mon Mar 27, 2006 3:07 pm

Hence the fucking reason why he's learning to shoot the 3, to extend his game so he's not JUST a dunker.

Mon Mar 27, 2006 3:13 pm

He was 0/3 against the Magic today. Only 1/10 overall.

Mon Mar 27, 2006 3:16 pm

Well, he took a step back from his learning

Dude cut the crap, it wasn't luck. He actually has a pretty good shooting technique and used to hit the outside shot in high school all the time. It's not like you completely lose your jumper when you go to the NBA from hghi-school/win the dunk contest.

It's kinda sad he averages only 10 points a game. I dunno, I really thought there would be more out of Josh Smith. At least he's averaging over 2 blocks a game, which is really respectable.

Mon Mar 27, 2006 5:34 pm

yea hes defenatly a good player, but many had doubts about his three pointers. He shot terrible last year on them and nobody expected him to make them this year, which he didnt in the beginning. He shootin a lot more.

Tue Mar 28, 2006 10:12 am

i don't think there's anything sad about Smith only averaging 10ppg, cy. remember he went from high school to pros and his offensive game wasn't polished to begin with

I think it's safe to say that player development has been what Atlanta has been striving for since the season started. it's not like there's some old creaky veteran like antonio davis on the roster taking away minutes from the SF's

I know it was against Charlotte, but he had a killer game today.

20pts.
14rebs.
8asts.
5blks.
2stls.
7-15FG.
