Does anyone else feel like they're becoming...overused? I know it's cool to see teams pull them out every so often and there are rules stating teams need to wear the alternates a certain number of times but it seems the way some teams choose to wear them they might as well make the alternates the main uniform and scale the older design back to an alternate.
And I know retro is the new black and I'm all for acknowledging history but I think it's getting a bit out of hand. In some cases you have teams wearing the jerseys that weren't even part of their lineage, such as the Bulls wearing the Stags' uniforms and Miami suiting up in Floridians gear.
The other thing is the relevance of the choice of throwbacks. For example, teams selecting throwbacks from the same era. While the Lakers/Celtics rivalry has been running since the 60s, their most competitive era was probably the 80s since both teams were at the top for basically the whole decade and each team managed to win a title against the other during that time.
It just seems a bit silly then if the Lakers and Celtics go out and celebrate the history of that rivalry with the Lakers in Minneapolis or early LA jerseys and the Celtics have 80s throwbacks or their current jerseys. That's the other thing of course. When one team is wearing the team's current jersey and the other a throwback from as far back as 40+ years ago it just doesn't look right and I think the attempt to acknowledge history is kind of watered down.
Anyway, excuse the long rant but the retro craze is starting to become like the headband craze a few years back. It just doesn't feel as special when they come out every other game. Likewise the alternate jerseys.

For the 76ers and Wizards i would they its cool that they were Retro Jerseys so often, cuz the normal Jerseys are ugly
Sat Feb 25, 2006 9:58 pm
i used to mind them, now not so much. i think they toned it down a little this year, or i may be mistaken. they were pretty much wearing a retro jersey every 3 or 4 games last year.
you want to know whats getting out of hand? the tights. everyone is wearing them this season, it's unbelievable. i think it started with kobe, vince carter and mike redd, and eventually has trickled down to the likes of lebron, wade, snaq, bogut, AI, AI2, webber. i'm sure there are more, but those are the ones i saw tonight and last night -- just an ugly, ugly sighting; the league really has to look at this.

I read that Bogut said he doesn't really like wearing them, he knows that they look ridiculous but apparentely they really do make a difference or something.

snaq

( i dont know why, but

)
Well, I don't mind the alternates, only a few alternates look decent, but I kinda dont like the retros. Maybe they should just have a retro week where the teams wear their team retros and they dont have to do it again for the season...

yes, like the AFL over here. i dont really care either way. i only get to see a game or two a week, ive only ever seen one retro jersey thats it.

The NBA should only allow its teams to wear retro jerseys during rivalry week , and thats it . I wouldn't mind seeing teams wear them for rivalry week , but not at all for the rest of the season . Last year , Houston and the Cavs overwore those jerseys

.

Agree

Almost everybody has them now

^^^i agree.
As far as alternate jerseys, i think the limit is 8 game per season, which means Detroit can only wear their red jerseys one more time......7-0 with them

Lakers wear their home whites every Sunday at home during the regular season

it's ok, just as long as they pick good ones... sorry, but the Chicago ones are whack. Definitely liked the San Diego Clips jerseys & the light blue Sac jerseys.
The Hornets needs to pull out the old Charlotte jerseys.

Which is good. I like the idea of alternates but in the cases where they're pulled out more often than not, one wonders why they don't just nominate them as the primary jerseys and be done with it. The other thing that's a bit weird is when teams wear an alternate or retro road jersey at home forcing the away team to wear their home whites. I guess it's just a pet peeve in the grand scheme of things.

That's kind of what prompted me in the rant, the Stags jerseys the Bulls have worn a couple of times. I understand it's honouring the city but the Stags are not part of the Bulls' lineage. Furthermore, those uniforms should only really be worn once. An 80s or 90s retro would be preferable if they need to fill a quota.

Orlando must have been wearing their old Shaq-Penny era throwbacks in every home game.
Thu Mar 02, 2006 10:54 am
That always looked odd when the Magic did that during McGrady's time in Orlando.
Thu Mar 02, 2006 12:46 pm
yeah I love those old blue Magic jerseys too... but the Floridian & NO Buccaneers jerseys really bother me...
Thu Mar 02, 2006 1:25 pm
in australia, i think they show very few nba games.....it happens that the games you see, you see teams wearing retro jerseys....in north america, we see lot of nba games every day, so thats why only you are complaining about it
also, i think those chicago stag jerseys are very ugly......the bulls should wear jerseys from 84-85 away for throwbacks

I like that idea, just have one week where they're allowed to wear retros; and then only let teams where their altenate on a limited number of Sundays.

Raptors shuld wear their old ones... I miss those ones.

Actually, none of the games that have been shown here have featured retros to the best of my recollection, perhaps a couple but I can't recall them. But pretty much every time the Cavs have been shown they've been wearing their blue alternates.
And those of us who have pay TV and get to see NBA games also see SportsCenter and photos are readily available on the web, so it's not as though we live in complete ignorance of games that aren't televised here.
Also, I admitted it was only a pet peeve rather than a full blown "this is a travesty" style rant. Furthermore, I've never questioned why others don't agree with my point of view, I've simply stated it and offered my reasons for believing it.

OMG shut up Andrew. Dont you know Australians don't know anything about the NBA? Canadians are much more educated, thats why the Vancover Grizzlies failed
Mon Mar 06, 2006 1:55 pm
does the NBA use revenue sharing like the NFL does? this could be one of the reasons why there are so many 'retro jersey' nites
Mon Mar 06, 2006 3:36 pm
My fav retro is the Lakers jersey (the blue one with Los Angeles in white). The Floridians one though is scary. Black, pink and orange... I dont think its possible to pick worse colors.

don't know what he's complaining about, the Bucks have some of the nicest jerseys around.

He's not talking about the jerseys. Read the thread properly.
