If you are the coach of any team in the NBA,what strategy on defense will you do to be able to shut down Kobe??Will you double team him on top or basically play one-on-one with your best defender?I remember the game that the Lakers lost to the Bobcats wherein Kobe scored 35 points despite no basket in the 4th quarter.Scoring 62 points through 3rd against Dallas and ofcourse the 81 points he scored against Toronto.Basically, the question is how can you stop this guy?Looks like God disguised as Kobe Bryant!
wHATS YOUR THOUGHTS??

Trade for Ruben Patterson and let him guard Kobe

Show him a hot 16 year old girl

maybe zone? so no one player needs to guard him the entire game. Also LA seems to have no 2nd option when it come to scoring.

put Chuck Norris on him. GAME OVER!

throw a beer cup at him.....oh wait

Aggressively double team him. Kobe's instincts offensively are to beat the double team rather than pass out of it more often than not, so a carefully positioned double team - preferably sealing off the baseline - is going to force him into an undesirable shot. Being the player that he is, he's going to make it some of the time. But not nearly as much as under single coverage or wide open.
Swamp him the minute he gets near the paint. The Sixers did that very effectively in a game against the Lakers earlier this year. As soon as Kobe got into the paint, he ran into a forest. He ended up with 17 that game, hardly a pathetic outing but nowhere near his current standards.

Pistons played good D on him too. Made sure there was help where ever he went.

Put some 1 like Bruce Bowen on him (best defender in the league). he made him shoot 11 from 28 or somthin.
Sun Feb 05, 2006 5:49 pm
Its not Bruce bowen, its the spurs help defense that contains kobe. Kobe against bowen one on one would demolish bruce.

The truth is that most NBA players aren't able to stop other NBA players one-on-one. It's the guys behind them that do the real work. Bruce Bowen is a good defender by himself, but with Duncan in the paint, he's the best in the league.
Sun Feb 05, 2006 9:12 pm
No, he's still not best in the league. I'd rank Prince, Kobe, Iggy etc all ahead of him.
Sun Feb 05, 2006 9:13 pm
Iguodola did the best job on Kobe of playing him 1-on-1 on the perimeter, but as Andrew mentioned, 5 guys packed the pain anytime he wanted to go in.
Sun Feb 05, 2006 9:17 pm
But Iggy still remained in front of him and played him really physical. Also at the time, Dalemburt wasnt playing, and Hunter isnt a significant help defender, webber doesnt have much lift anymore so cant really challenge shots at the front of the rim and Korver.. I'm not even going to explain Korvers defense.

i have to mention though, back then Kobe actually had a good shot selection, now that's all gone.
Sun Feb 05, 2006 9:27 pm
Kobe taking a contested jumpshot is a better shot than Kwame Brown shooting an open 10 footer, so nothing is wrong with his shot selection.

Maybe it only seems that NO ONE can stop Kobe?! Maybe all the teams realized that you dont need to stop kobe to win! All you have to do is allow kobe to beat up ur players one on one and show he is the best scorer in the L, but the Lakers will loose!
So you know...If u stop kobe but loose, its not gona say "Loss, but kobe had only 10pts!".
I thogh Toronto did a great job is playing kobe exept in the 4th. in the 4th they should have double and trippled him and make others who by the way have not made shots the whole game to take shots!
Sun Feb 05, 2006 10:52 pm
Why do you want to stop him? When he jacks up shots like that the Lakers are BARELY a .500 team.
Just letting him fire away will you lose the 1 game he gets hot and scores 40+? Certainly. Will you lose a 7 game series? Very unlikely, since the Lakers are 50-50 vs the entre league, much less a #1 seed they'll face in the playoffs.
Kobe is one of the best 1 on 1 players in the league, unfortunately it's a 5 on 5 game. Kobe should join the And1 team or play tennis or something.

How do you stop Kobe?
When he is asleep, inject his ass with cement. If he struggles to even make it to the bench at the start of the game, I guarantee he wont be able to get on the court after that.
On a serious, I would say double team him wherever he picks up the ball. He get alot of turnovers in that instance because he always tries to do too much.

Whenever he drives to the basket, bodyslam him to the floor.

But then everybody would get ejected.

You double team him with quick guards... Kobe had 7 turnovers yesterday against the Hornets when he was double teamed.

Do what he did on mike miller.
