Hawks Meet Raps Before Hitting the Road

[07/17/05, Atlanta] - The Atlanta Hawks are coming into this game with the smell, and the look of victory. Mike Woodson was so bold to even gloat to the press that "this squad may even pull an upset this year and catch the playoffs." If this were to happen, it would be the first positive thing to happen to the team in a long time. As for the Raptors, no early season momentum, and no breakout scorer have graced their presence as of yet. They sit in a slump which makes itself known in their 0-2 record. "Although they aren't playing at the top of their games," said Woodson, "it doesn't mean they don't have guys that can get going in a split second." Players like Chris Bosh, Morris Peterson, and Jalen Rose to name a couple, can light it up at any given contest. This won't be a shoe-in, it will be a battle.

Second Overtime Game of the Season...
After four quarters, the game was tied up like a 30 year-old knot, but the players were only warming up. For the first 4 minutes of the 5 minute overtime, both teams traded baskets, neither opponent gaining a respectable advantage, until one play in the final minute. The Hawks led by one, as Stoudemire fed it in to Harrington, who was having a spectacular night. He was double-teamed, thus leaving Salim open for the tré. He passed it. The rookie pulled up. The stroke was perfect, the arc was just right, and the spin was flawless. The ball met nothing but mesh as the Hawks went up by four and drilled the stake right into the heart of the Raptors team.

Player of the game honours were passed to Al Harrington, who clocked his first 30 point game of the season. The seventh year player picked up 30 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Most who watched would say that he had his way with Bosh on offense, pushing him around like a 10 year old boy. Also picking up a double-double, and the first of his career, was Salim Stoudemire, who scored 14 points, and dished 12 assists. Other notable performances: Joe Johnson, who scored 24 points, and grabbed 4 steals, Tyronn Lue, who scored 15 points, and passed his way to 4 assists, and Marvin Williams, who scored 11 points, and got 2 assists.

The Toronto Raptors were lead by All Star, Chris Bosh, who scored 21 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and blocked 3 shots, and veteran, Mike James, who ticked 22 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals. There were 3 other Raptors players who had above 15 points for the night.

"I think Joe Johnson has given this Atlanta team that extra bump that they needed to clear the speed bump that has been catching them for so many years," said Raptors coach, Sam Mitchell after the game. The Hawks shot 54% from the field and 35% from beyond the arc, outdoing Toronto who shot 51% from the field, and 25% from three point range.

"After evaluating our options, and what we feel is the best for our team's present as well as future, we have come upon a trade that we hope will help us push open the door to the playoffs," said Atlanta coach, Mike Woodson. He seemed extremely excited at the conference, conveying a positive attitude towards the GM's decision to trade away Marvin Williams. Up until this point, Williams has been averaging 6.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, which is far below the production the team had projected for the youngster.

"As far as being traded this early in my career," said Williams, "it will only build my character. I just hope I can do more in Denver than I could here in Atlanta."

This trade greatly benefits the Hawks, as it gives them some great inside presence to help Harrington in Nene, as well as a veteran player with some great experience, something this team doesn't have a lot of. Woodson told us that "having Voshon (Lenard) is going to really help [them] spread the floor on offense, and give [them] that extra option."

As for what the team is giving up, Woodson seems to believe that they are getting more than their bang for their buck. Their main concern when looking for trade options was the fact that they would lose a guy with great potential, who's still young. This trade is great because Nene has some great potential as well, being only a third year player.

Although I took into consideration these things, Nene, although not being as good as Marvin, is more essential for my team's needs. He's inside presence, period. As for Voshon, when he retires, I'll have more space to sign a free agent. I could also trade him. Anyway ,he's just a spot up, as I said.

It's more of a win than lose situation in my opinion. I got what I needed in exchange for a player who wasn't producing enough offense, and a guy who doesn't get barely any court time.

[07/21/05, San Antonio] - "With (Marvin) Williams no longer wearing a Hawks jersey, and two new players gracing our roster," said Atlanta Hawks' coach, Mike Woodson before the game, "tonight will likely be a contest where the Hawks will need to reconfigure their comfort zone, and get back into their groove." With Nene to add some help for Harrington on defense, Atlanta is hoping Duncan will be slightly more contained and controlled, while Johnson and Lue attempt to control Parker and Ginobili in the backcourt (both teams' backcourts are averaging nearly 41 points a game).

Atlanta's Luck Runs Out
The first few minutes looked promising for the Hawks as their all star guard, Joe Johnson knocked down 7 straight points (he had the game high with 22). The rest of the first as well as the entire second quarter was a basket trading performance, ending 51-47 in favor of the reigning championship Spurs. The third quarter egnited as the Spurs' lead grew to 18, remaining that way until nearly half way through the fourth, when it was presumably too late. Although the Hawks began a comeback, they only got within 6 before the final buzzer indicated game over.

Player of the Game honours went out to San Antonio's cornerstone, Tim Duncan, who put up big numbers all around, scoring 20 points, and grabbing 15 boards to lead his team to a 6-0 record for the season. Backing him up, he had Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili who scored 15 points and dished 8 assists, and scored 14 points with 2 rebounds respectively. Another notable was Nazr Mohammed, who put down 12 points, and picked up 5 offensive rebounds.

There was controversy as to how well the two new team members would play in their first game with the Hawks, but, to say the least, they both rose above and beyond whatever expectations had been set for them. Nene grabbed a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards, whilst Voshon Lenard dropped 14 points, going 4/8 from beyond the arc. Al Harrington had a dissapointing night, scoring only 12 points, and tallying only 4 rebounds. Although it was to be expected playing against as dominant a defensive player as Duncan, all he had to say after the game was that he "could, and should have played harder."

I've rather lost interest in this dynasty...
Maybe in a few days I'll be back into it, I don't know.

Anyways... I'm debating going for the Nets and retiring this dynasty, but it won't be up to me. Either way, I'm good to go.

Stick with Atlanta, they are some what half decent and have a young core. But the Hawks are more of a future project type thing rather than a one season thing
