Give Kobe what Kobe deserves

Pretty incredible, to say the least.

It's like that almost every game... The only one who really scores of the Lakers is Kobe.
But as someone already said, Jordan's 69-point-performance was waaay better: those 69 points went along with 18 rebounds and 6 assists.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 8:53 am

I was in disbelief when I saw this. I popped on Sports Center this morning and I saw
"Bryant-81 pts...(2nd most behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100)" and I was like "Huh? Is that right? Maybe they mean 81 points in the last 2 games. I know he's been pretty hot." Then I turned to ESPN2 with Mike and Mike in the morning and over in the corner it said "Seattle vs. Pitt XL and Bryant 81 points" and I was like "WTF!?!?!?" So I waited for it to go by on SC again and I was like "Jesus Christ! Wait, Kobe is Jesus Christ " then ESPN ran through Rockets highlights and they're like "T-Mac scored 43. Big deal, Kobe scored 81, almost twice as much."

I'm still in denial. I'm about to DL the game, so if anyone wants it, PM me.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 9:00 am

Joe, just because Wilt was a center and Kobe Bryant is a swingman doesn't mean anything. Not to mention I was just pointing out that he had the same amount of assists in less minutes with less shot attempts.

But like I said, just because you play center doesn't mean you can't pass out of the low block.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 10:43 am

It's incredible. I'm not the typical Kobe fan, but you give props when props are due. 81 points is rediculous and for him to do it in this time period. When you look back at when Wilt did it, there wasn't as much knowledge of the game from players and coaches that long ago. Now there is more knowledge of the game and its much harder to score in a league like this. The fact that he had all his teams points in the 2nd half made it even more impressive.

It wouldn't have been as impressive if he didn't shoot well, but the guy shot well from the field, OVER 50%! Give credit when credit is do people, yes Kobe can be a ballhog at times, but his team was down double digits and he had to take over. If you were as hot as KObe was in that game, you probably would've done the same thing knowing you could've possibly made history and his team still won.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 10:57 am

yep- that was crazy. credit to Bryant.

It's a shame that people have to start comparing this to other historic performances because along the way people are going to find ways to discredit/devalue this amazing performance as well as the other ones. I'd prefer not to comment on the comparisons that are being brought up

81pts damn

Tue Jan 24, 2006 11:25 am

I'm not a fan of kobe...but as an NBA Fan...i loved seeing the highlights of this. It's gonna replay on NBA tv..so im gonna watch it tommorow.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 11:36 am

omg...Kobe goes for 81. This is unbelievable. The firs time I looked at Nba.com i thought they made a mistake, maybe 18 instead of 81. But then I saw it on the news and in the paper, i was like WTF? Even though i hate Kobe, i have to give him props for this.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 11:39 am

This actually made the newspaper, on the Geelong one, it said on the backpage in the top BRYANTY SCORES 81 POINTS and then I turned the page and there he was, small picture of Bryant and an article.

Then I got the Melbourne Herald Sun and I went to the backpage and then I opened the paper and there was Kobe Bryant making a lay-up past Matt Bonner and it said Kobe scores 81 points.

The articles were practically the same, both starting out as "His 81 points is the second most behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100 against New York....blah."

But, good stuff.

And ShAuN, fucking hell, this guy has scored 81 points, he had to do it to win and yet you continue to be unbelievably biased towards Gilbert, T-Mac and Paul Pierce. If you were in his situation, on a shitbum team, you would've scored 82 points to win so shut up

Tue Jan 24, 2006 11:50 am

Well, I have to say that I'm amazed. Kobe said after he made 62 against the Mavs that he would've probably scored 80 if he would've played the last quarter as well. And I have to say that even I as a Kobe-lover found that pretty hard to believe. I didn't think that 80 was in reach of any active player. But he really proved to every doubter today what he's capable of doing when he is in good rythmn.

And to all of you that is trying to compare this performance to Wilt's 100 point game, just let it go. We could never get the anwer of what perfomance was the best. Wilt made 100 in 1962, Kobe made 81 in 2006, and the game has changed a whole lot in those 44 years. Wilt was a center, Kobe is a shooting guard. And with no footage of Wilt's 100 points we will never get the answer of what performance was the best, even how hard we try. I really don't like to compare two performances from two different eras, because there's no answer. But to add to that, Wilt's 100 point game was unarguably the sickest individual performance in his era, and Kobe's 81 is the sickest individual performance of this era.

And I would like to end this post with a little comparison of what's happened this era. Looking at only the players who's currently active, Kobe easily tops the career-high scores. With his 81 he's 19 points over the next man on the list, Tracy McGrady who's career high is 62, the same as Kobe scored against Dallas in December. So Kobe is having a heck of a season, and we're only halfway trough it. If he can keep up the consistancy he's been showing as of late he will easily fetch the scoring title, and also maybe a MVP award.

Get Kobe some better teammates and he will catch up with MJ's six rings!

That hasnt changed. The team made a conscious decision to keep feeding Kobe the ball. :)

I still cant get over this.

Its funny how even though this guy had the world in awe last night, there are still those out there finding somethnig bad to say. "He shot the ball too much blah blah..." or "81 was great but Jordan's 69 in overtime against Cleveland was better." Have you seen a guy score 50 on only 5 shots? Would you have preferred he did 60 on 10? If Lebron did this I'm sure everyone would be sucking his toes but its not the same with this guy.

do you why we have so many kobe's haters? because of his rape case.. that is my only reasoning to kobe's haters. This guy is unbelivable. I have to say taht Michael Jordan is my favorite player and the one I considered the best of all-time but again MJ never scored 81 neither reached the 70 points, Kobe did !

Tue Jan 24, 2006 3:04 pm

He's the devil.

He scored 81 points on his 666th career game.
The year is 06.
He took 66 shots to get there (42 from the field, 20 from the line).

Tue Jan 24, 2006 3:43 pm

Why do Kobe fans think that Kobe scoring a boatload of points will somehow shut up haters who say he's a selfish ballhog? I really don't understand that continuing logic...

69 points, 6 assists means Jordan was responsible for 81 points that night, in an overtime game where it mattered more.

81 points and 2 assists means Kobe was reponsible for 85, and he was still shooting when they were up by 20 with 4 seconds left...

Plus Jordan added 18 boards that night...

81 points is still amazing though. I've let it sink in and it's still amazing.

And as someone else mentioned earlier...

He had 6 rebounds, and his assists, steals and blocks all together made... 6.

Freaky.

He also missed 6 threes, and didn't play for 6 minutes in the game.

His last points came at the line with 43 seconds left.

no, just as many people think what they think of kobe then as they do now. maybe you should take kobe's cock out of your mouth for a second, grow a brain, and see that criticism doesnt mean hate. i think the reason kobe fans dislike criticism is because its quite obvious that some of the criticism is just. as for the extremes, well, what can i say for every "kobe eat shit and die" theres another "kobe da best! 11111", get over it, its the same for every player really; its just that kobe has more extremist fans on both sides than most, the lovers only see the haters and vice versa.

I was making that shit up. All the catholic prophets do that. KOBE IS DA DEVIL!!!

Wed Jan 25, 2006 1:30 am

All I got to say is fuck you Kobe, fuck you.

If it weren't for you spanking us so hard then the Raptors could have won that game with possibly a blowout.

Kobe Bryant deserves to have his knees beaten to pieces with a sledgehammer so he can never play basketball ever again.

I hate players who are good. :x

Wed Jan 25, 2006 2:28 am

I hope that he settles for less shots against the Warriors intsead of going for 8/40 after the 81 points against Toronto.
