kobe with jordans bulls team

Tue Jan 24, 2006 6:27 am

do u think that kobe could have been better than jordan with the likes of pippen and rodman in the 90s. after last night hes really proved a huge point.

whats ur opinion?

Tue Jan 24, 2006 6:42 am

Well, I didn't see this topic coming .

And no, MJ is in a league of his own and their playing styles are different. Jordan was able to put huge numbers in the points column and defend at the top level. Kobe has to prove that he can do both in the same time.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 7:16 am

I thought Kobe was known for playing on both ends, I must be mistaken.

He is, Vank doesn't know what he is talking about.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 7:18 am

VanK did you just block out the times when Kobe made the all-defense team?

Tue Jan 24, 2006 7:39 am

He's an overrated defender. It's a common mental mistake. When somebody is good at something, it makes him sseem good in everything.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 7:57 am

Explain Nash then.

What point?? That he can score?? He already proved that in the past, we all know that he's able to score.
Kobe will never be like Michael Jordan, even if he scored more points than him in one game: that doesn't mean anyhting.
Michael Jordan was able to rebound, to pass the ball and he was a better defender than Kobe, but that doesn't mean that Kobe isn't a good defender. Kobe is also able to rebound and pass the ball, he just doesn't give a shit about that: the only thing he thinks about is that he needs to score to win because his team is shitty but that's not good players' mentality, good players think only to win the game, even if that means to score only 5 points.

Kobe-hating should be the next major professional sport.

We have some high draft picks in this forum.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 9:36 am

Nope, because one of the most powerful things that Jordan did was force the entire Bull's management to NOT trade away Scottie Pippen during the latter dynasty phase, which was all but a signed deal.

Kobe would have shipped Scottie out of Chicago just as fast as he did Shaq, and the Bulls would just where the Lakers are now... trying to even enter the playoffs with while Kobe scores 40+.

So any criticism of Kobe is "hating" and he's perfect? Sorry, I don't buy that.

As it happens, I think Kobe would do quite well if he had the kind of help Michael Jordan did during the 90s. But he has not surpassed Michael Jordan simply by scoring 81 points. There are other qualities that place Jordan in an elite group that Kobe has yet to break into.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 10:05 am

Kobe is an amazing scorer and has shown great defense. He'll have a Jordan game though when he has a high scoring performance, a defensive take over, over 7 assists (and Kobe can't get over 2 in his prime), and evidence that he has clearly gotten his whole team into it through leadership and tenacity. Ron Harper, Dennis Rodman, Horace Grant, Steve Kerr, Scottie Pippen, Luc Longley, Toni Kukoc, and all the rest of Jordan's well known supporters have gotten their respects and admirations because Jordan tied them drastically into the game. At one time Lamar Odom was supposed to be a big player for the future of the NBA. As Bryant's teammate, you don't hear much said of him.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 10:09 am

You know, it really annoys me when people play the bandwagon game. Kobe has had one great season.. the others have been good, but every other season he's had up to this point have been out of MJ's league.

Even this great season isn't as good as the majority that MJ had... he is averaging about the same as Jordan in points, but his FG% is drastically lower... about 7 or 8% lower. MJ averaged 49.7% shooting for his career. Those numbers are skewed as well because he shot only 41% and 44% in his seasons in Washington. MJ had five seasons where he averaged over 51% from the field. Kobe on the other hand has never shot better than 46% from the field in any one season, and he's shooting 45% this season. That number is no better than any other season for him... he just happens to be taking a lot more shots. Michael also averaged one better than Kobe in steals per game and assists... his average in turnovers is also lower.

I dont think there is any question at all who is the better player. Anyone who can shoot that high of a percentage from the field as a guard is amazing.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 10:49 am

I hear Bryant say he doesn't want to be compared to Jordan yet he's pretty much got all of Jordan's mannerisms down. He's even using the word "lethargic" LOL

so yeh, after this 81 point game, Bryant is in the top echelon of NBa players of all time and would have accomplished everything Jordan did had he been in the same situation as he. IN fact he would probably won an minimum 8peat

I hear Bryant can cure cancer now too...

taking something and running arent we.

Kobe is playing great ball, but Jordan still would have done better

Perhaps. But for as much legitimate "hating" that takes place it does seem like any criticisms that come Kobe's way are immediately branded with that label.

It's not Kobe hating just cause you think it's stupid of everyone to think he's all of a sudden on MJ's level or even suprassed MJ because of one awesome 81-point night.

Colin wrote:VanK did you just block out the times when Kobe made the all-defense team?

Just cause you make the all-defense team one or two times does not automatically mean you should be considered an all-time defender year in and year out. His defensive intensity has dropped off in recent years with him focusing more attention on his offense.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 4:14 pm

No, Jordan played DEFENSE all the time....Kobe's defense is "lethargic" these days...references to his all-def team mean nothing if he doesn't play D now.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 4:43 pm

well 2 things that seperate jordan from kobe are

1. jordan made his teammates better...he basically moulded pippen in practice playing 1 vs 1's with him.......we are still waithing what kobe does with odom
2. jordan is always play defense...he made the 1st all defense team for 9 years in a row during his bull's days, won DPOTY, and made that very smart steal in game 6 of the 1998 nba finals...kobe didnt make the 1st all defense team last year :? ...doesn't seem like kobe always tries on defense, even though he is a very good defender

if you do put kobe into bull's teams, i think he could win a championship...but its really jordan who gelled the bulls together

Tue Jan 24, 2006 5:07 pm

just something i want to throw in. had scottie been traded, the bulls would've grabbed none other than tracy mcgrady. great move by mike though :D

Tue Jan 24, 2006 8:02 pm

Kobe might have made the All-Defensive team in the past... I don't think it's happening this season.

Kobe Brant is not yet at the level of greatness that MJ put up and showed to the world. The two are different types of players. Kobe plays on the ball, MJ could play off of it. IMO, thats the difference between the two. Because MJ could play off the ball, he presented more opportunities to himself and his team.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 9:52 pm

sorry but comparing kobe's achievements so far to that of jordans is absoloutley ludacris.

i mean comon! when does this stop? jordan was in a different league compared to kobe.

Tue Jan 24, 2006 10:26 pm

Colin wrote:VanK did you just block out the times when Kobe made the all-defense team?

Kobe is a great defender when he puts his mind on it, it's just not happening for him this year, because he gives all his energy to one side of the court. Jordan scored over 30ppg for his career AND was a great defender at the same time. Just watch some games this year and you'll know what I mean. He did a great job on Ray Allen earlier this season, but that is not a constant.

BTW, being on the All-Defensive team doesn't make you neccesarily a great defender - Larry Hughes, anyone. (Kobe is one, though. At least he was in the years he was on those AD teams.)

And no, MJ is in a league of his own and their playing styles are different. Jordan was able to put huge numbers in the points column and defend at the top level. Kobe has to prove that he can do both at the same time.

I would like to add 'for a whole season' part.
