Pau Gasol? The terms is most improved, not becoming less soft and gaining more muscle year by year. Gasol's passing has been nice this season, and his shot blocking and rebounding have gone slightly up more than just due to his minutes increase. That's not a MIP improvement, that's improvement young players should have.
Pau Gasol-
04-05: 17.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.6 bpg
05-06: 19.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 4.1 apg, 2.34 bpg
Show the MPG stats, he already averaged 19 PPG and 2 BPG a few years ago when he got the minutes, and he has improved, but it's far from a drastic improvement, and definately not an MIP improvement.
Ricky Davis? Ricky averaged 20-5-5 in Cleveland. He could already do this before, it's not some new thing. He's just getting more minutes, more shots, and more playmaking duties because this season their's no Payton and no Walker.
Bosh? He averaged 20-9 after Carter left last season, we were kind of expecting 20-10 from him this season since he already showed he was capable of doing it. He has improved his post game a little, his FT shooting has improved, and his passing a little, he can handle double teams better and doesn't turn the ball over as much.
dare i say Chauncey Billups who has increased assists from 5.8 to 9.4 and ppg from 16.5 to 19.0 whilst decreasing his TO's from 2.24 to 1.96? All this in just about minute less PT than last season. Now that's actual improvement.
Larry Brown not being there has something to do with this. Faster paced offense, the PG has more reign and their are less restrictions on what the PG can do, no more leash. Look at how Marbury is down about 4 PPG and 2 APG this season under LB. Chauncey was this good before, he just wasn't allowed to show it.
I think Mehmet Okur should not be forgotten...
05-06 Stats: 18 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 2.5 APG
04-05 Stats: 13 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 2 APG
He's basically been the Jazz's best player this year and shoots the 3-ball pretty well too.
Clearly a MPG improvement, but that's not excluded in MIP talk by most people. Even with that, I don't know if he's improved enough though. Thinking he would get the minutes last season, I predicted him as a 17 PPG, 9 RPG, 2-3 APG, 1.5 BPG guy, so I wasn't surprised at all since Sloan said a mistake he made last season was not playing him more. With Boozer and Kirilenko injured even more this season again, the shots were there for him.
MIP's
David West - Obviously their's the whole minutes part. As soon as Magloire left I picked him up on a few fantasy teams. His main improvement came in his jumpshot and shot, which was decent before, but he made good now, even has range up to three and is shooting 84% from the line. His offensive game improved this season, not much else in the improvement department for him outside of the MPG increase.
Boris Diaw - His shot improved, and really outside of that his confidence was what improved the most. The Euro championships helped with that, he led his team in PPG and APG and was up there in RPG. He shot 40%+from 3 [Fiba three], and played well overall. In addition to that playing on the Suns where the coach did not look at your weaknesses, but played you to your strengths helped a lot. Diaw came in as a 6'8 all-round PG/SG/SF who was a good defender. He's just showing more versatility due to his role on the team, and doing what he was supposed to be able to do. Playing C helped in increasing his rebound and blocks, and his assists increased because he has improved in that area, but also because he now has finishers and a system that allows you to be effective as a drive and dish passer.
Smush Parker - Went from not in the league to starting PG. Though he wouldn't be a starting PG on other teams that don't have a playmaker at both SG and SF, he works on the Lakers. He was supposed to be a shooter, and is finally showing that, and that's about all, just learnt to stay on an NBA court, really hasn't learnt PG skills.
