What happened to Ginobili?

Thu Dec 22, 2005 1:18 pm

People were saying he was as good as Kobe/T-Mac...Marc Stein said he was better than ANYONE on the Pistons during last season's finals...and ESPN the Mag said he "should be in the Lebron/Wade conversation" (even though he's 28 years old)

He's averaging 15, 4.6 boards and 3 assists this year.

And crickets are chirping. Is it just the injury? Or is he just the next Wally Szczerbiak?

I think that could be spot on. He's a good player, no doubt, but I've always felt that he's a bit overrated.

Thu Dec 22, 2005 1:22 pm

I think he's had a slow start this year, of course the injury is a big factor in that.
Just wait for the playoffs. 8-)

Thu Dec 22, 2005 1:26 pm

I don't remember anyone saying he is as good as Tmac/Kobe. He is a great player, no doubt, but he is not a Kobe or Wade. This year though, he has been injured and didn't play at a 100% since last year's final. I do hope though, that he gets back by Christmas when we face the Pistons. When he heals, he'll start playing better than last year.

but he is not a Kobe or Wade

He's a Wa-Be

If he is the next Wally Szczerbiak than that isn't bad, because Wally is averaging about 25ppg over the past 3-4 weeks.

Thu Dec 22, 2005 2:23 pm

Anyway, he's always been overrated

^Can you elaborate a little more?

hmm i don't know about the lebron/wade or wally thing but his style of play does attract many fans.

but combine the fact that he does bring substance with the style (especially in the playoffs. ) and was a gold medal winner during last year's offseason, i think his popularity is warranted

he benefits from playing with TD but he sure makes the most of it

should be a perennial all star and future all nba defensive team member

Thu Dec 22, 2005 4:12 pm

It's ashame that Ginobili is 29, I thought he was like 25 :( so he won't play as long as other guards and stuff.

Thu Dec 22, 2005 4:20 pm

Yeah, I wish he would have come to the NBA when he got drafted in 1999 :(

Thu Dec 22, 2005 6:16 pm

He's probably better than Szczerbiak because he can create his own shot and plays D.

Having said that, i think he's borderline All-Star in the West. T-Mac, Kobe, J Rich, Ray Allen and probably somebody i'm forgetting are better than him. However he gets the benefit of Tim Duncan.

Thu Dec 22, 2005 8:20 pm

Manu's probably become a little overrated but there's no doubt he's a fine player. I think the problem is that these days as soon as player grabs attention it's not a matter of "Hey, he's pretty good" but instead the hype machine going straight to "This guy is awesome!" especially after a few standout games.

Then again it goes the other way too. Right now it's easy to look at Ginobili and conclude he's burned out. He's been banged up and not everyone gets out to a flying start. I think he'll pick up as the season goes on.

Thu Dec 22, 2005 8:26 pm

kind of like people are jumping on the Tony Parker bandwagon, that is until he fails in the playoffs.

People kind of jumped on Manu last season when he was averaging 20 5 & 5 early on i think. Too bad he flops otherwise i might of liked him (how many phantom fouls did he draw in the Finals and when he ran threw the defense nothing gets called :x )

Thu Dec 22, 2005 8:50 pm

who are these people jumping on the tony parker bandwagon? i have not seen many or any articles or even posts about him, correct me if im wrong. the kids averaging 20 ppg, 6.5 apg on 54% shooting. there should be more jumping than there is, maybe not off roofs, but at least dog houses. obviously he's taking advantage of duncan, but kobe took advantage of shaq, pippen of jordan, no harm no foul you can still jump, just don't overrate.

top 10 pgs in the league right now (iverson, arenas not included):
1. nash
2. billups
3. davis
4. parker
5. kidd
6. ford
7. cassell
8. miller
9. knight
10. paul/marbury

and yes ginoboli's a little overrated, but he's still good no doubt. a tier below tmac, ai, wade and kobe, maybe on par with allen.

Thu Dec 22, 2005 9:12 pm

i'd say Top 5 like this.....

1. AI
2. Billups
3. Nash
4. Kidd
5. Baron

on the bubble.....Cassell, Arenas, Knight, Paul, Marbury, Parker.

He's just a choker.

I hate his style, he plays very sloppy and acts like the typical non-defending European player, always whining and flopping.

Fri Dec 23, 2005 12:10 am

Wha?

Allen's averages this year: 24.6, 4.4r, 3.9a...and similar last year and the year before.

Ginobili averages 15 this year, 16 last year. Either Allen is being disrespected or Ginobili is still being overrated...

Fri Dec 23, 2005 4:50 am

Allen is a proven go to guy for 8 or so yrs....Ginobili is a second fiddle for 2yrs and they are supposed to be on par?

Fri Dec 23, 2005 7:05 am

i guess you're right, but then again ginobli's a proven winner.

Fri Dec 23, 2005 7:20 am

magius wrote:i guess you're right, but then again ginobli's a proven winner.
No, I think it's more that he's on a winner's team. And Manu hasn't even been the second fiddle to Duncan, rather the third behind Parker (IMO).

Fri Dec 23, 2005 7:51 am

hm.... he'll come around soon hopefully

Fri Dec 23, 2005 8:08 am

WTF??? A guy wins a title mostly on his own, becomes unstoppable and elevates his game during the most critical stretch of teh season, carries a lacklustre Duncan to another ring, and now because his average in ppg is 5 down because he is INJURED, he has become overrated?

Way to go, people...

Fri Dec 23, 2005 12:53 pm

I always thought he got away with travelling more than any other player in the league, but he still is a great player..

:applaud:
I don't know why you guys think he's overrated. I haven't heard a good explanation yet.
