I think when we're talking about the greatest players in history it goes beyond the statistics, because they've all got great numbers, records and statistical achievements that set them apart from the good and the rest of the league. There's also basketball skill and talent, the great individual games and performances, impact, team success...so many factors and you look at the greats and they fulfil all the criteria to some extent.

I think of Michael Jordan as the greatest player we've seen so far, which is a biased opinion but one I feel is supported by the criteria I just mentioned. What impressed me about him was that just when you thought he couldn't get any better, he found a way to raise his game. So many cliches can be used to describe him that it's been feeding the anti-culture for some time now yet at the same time there's an element of truth in there.

Magic Johnson once likened Jordan to a sports car shifting through gears as he upped his play during crunch time, only Jordan had so many more gears he could shift up into. Just when it looked like he'd done everything he could and we'd seen the best of him, he went out and did something else. That's a quality that can be attributed to several great players but it's a characteristic Jordan demonstrated quite often.

The other aspect that made him so special is that he had no real weakness in his prime. Three point shooting I suppose, but even then he could make them at a decent clip, he could make them when it counted and it didn't prevent him from being the great scorer that he was. It wasn't often he could be shut down by any lone defender consistetly. There were those who had their success but he still prevailed more often than not. And on top of that, he was one of the best defenders at his position as well.

Numbers are nice, but I don't think they prove any player to be the greatest ever. One has to look at that career as a whole, every aspect of a player to really judge how great he was.

According to Harvey Pollack's 1996/97 NBA Statistical Yearbook, there have been four quadruple doubles in NBA history.

Nate Thurmond, Chicago v. Atlanta 10/18/74
22 pts, 14 reb, 13 ass, 12 bks.

Alvin Robertson, San Antonio v. Phoenix 2/18/86
20 pts, 11 reb, 10 ass, 10 stls.

Hakeem Olajuwon, Houston v. Milwaukee 3/29/90
18 pts, 16 reb, 10 ass, 11 bks.

David Robinson, San Antonio v. Detroit 2/17/94
34 pts, 10 reb, 10 ass, 10 bks.

Duncan almost had one against the Nets was it? In the Finals. 2 Blocks shy I thinks.

Edit: http://www.nba.com/games/20030615/NJNSAS/boxscore.html

Yeps, two blocks shy of a 4 x double digits. In the finals on top of that.

Kind of spooky that 2 (almost 3) players from SA managed to get quadruple doubles.

I believe he had around 30 in his career during the regular season. I know he had a run of 7 straight back in 1989, he had quite a few that year.

actually i think kirilenko has a better chance at this. kirilenko is better at stealing than garnett, but blocks just as well as garnett.

points, rebounds, assist, blocks, and steals are the 5 categories that you can acheive double-double, triple-double, quadruple-double and quintuple-double ( never done before)

but i agree stats aren't everything. If it was then Oscar Robinson might be the best ever.

Yeah, I was too thinking of Kirilenko on that quintuple category... I think he is the best stat filler in the league right now, when you combine all the categories that are counted toward this. It's mainly due to his ability to both steal and block very well...

Even with 10 pts, 10 rebs, 10 assists, 10 steals and 10 blocks, I would really like to see that game... That would be a one man show from top to bottom... It would be just great. It would be a crazy game...

Kirilenko is closest to pulling this off right now. Only if he could get to 100% health and leave the injury problems behind, we might see some more of those crazy games from him. What did he get last night, 26pts, 12 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals and 8 blocks or something like that... That's one hell of a stat sheet filler line...

Had Jordan not retired in the first placed he would have ended up with 10+ season leading the league in points.

I still remenber the game in which MJ was sick with the flu and still pulled off and guided his team to victory. That's what I called greatness.
