If a rookie comes into the league , and doesn't play at all his rookie year , but starts playing his sophomore year , does he count as a rookie or sophomore? Example is Rodney Turiaf , if he comes back next season , will he be a Rookie or a Sophomore?

He will be a sophomore.

if they dont play ANY games, i thought they would be a rookie, cos didnt that happen with Collison
Mon Dec 05, 2005 9:51 am
I would have thought they were a rookie too
Mon Dec 05, 2005 9:58 am
Did he get paid his rookie salary when he was hurt? If he did, I'd assume that would be counted as his rookie year.

Didnt Zydrunas Ilgauskas started his rookie year during his second season? He did win the Rookie MVP award of the 1998 Rookie game.
Mon Dec 05, 2005 10:08 am
I don't think it starts until you actually play a game.

He could have won the MVP as a sophomore going up against the rookies...

Back then it was only rookies.

Yeah, SI says Ilgauskas' rookie year was 1997. Collison's was 2003.
Mon Dec 05, 2005 10:39 am
The first season the player plays is considered his rookie season. Turaif would play for the Rookie team at the All-Star Weekend if he was so inclined. Note that Collison has
only one year of expierence despite having been drafted two years ago. Last year he had an "R" there.
Mon Dec 05, 2005 10:47 am
SI must mean what year he was drafted.

IIRC, Speedy Claxton had a similar situation. He was consdered a rookie when he cameback from injury.

WTF?

Did I miss something?

Same with Sergei Monia I believe. He was in the league last year but this is his rookie year.
Mon Dec 05, 2005 11:26 am
Nothing, just meant to post that as a new topic. Sorry.
Mon Dec 05, 2005 1:31 pm

That was because of the lockout, completely different situation.

Yeah if a guy doesn't play 1 game in his "rookie" season, he's still considered a rookie the next year.

The lockout affected the 1998/1999 season. Ilgauskas was drafted in 1996 and played his first season in 1997/1998.
