Smush has been a pleasant surprise. I dont know why but I was expecting good numbers but not so early in the season. I thought as the season progressed he would get comfortable and simply bring the confidence from the playgrounds to the hardcourts. Great to see it materializing and so far he seems to be perfect for the job.

Indeed it is. But maintaining a 35 ppg average through 82 games is easier said than done, and it's early days. Ultimately, you can't win with just one player putting up stats. At the very least you need the rest of the team to be consistent and productive to go a long way in the NBA.

Of course, you're right. But 3 players of the starting five are anything but sure fire starters, and pretty far away from being proven or consistent... Simply put, if Bryant doesn't go 1987 Jordan on everybody, the Lakers are in for a long season. Of course, dominating the scoring doesn't have to mean you shoot every possession and that all shots are acceptable. I'm sure Bryant learned it last year.

Jordan did score over 35 ppg in two seasons, but shot over 48% from the floor. That's a Center average, nowadays.

Parker went cinderella on us for a week, but midnight came much earlier than expected. Let's see how he will do today.

That's true, but the Bulls enjoyed more success when Pippen took a larger role in the offense and Jordan was "only" scoring around 31, 32 per game. And you're right about three of the Lakers' starters being inconsistent and unproven, but Odom doesn't fit that bill. Kobe might have to shoulder more of the load than what may be "ideal" for greater success, but eventually he'll have to pull back a bit for the Lakers to go to the next step...at least he will if history is anything to go by.

That's what I mean. Kobe will be compelled to hold off a little bit, WHEN ( this needs enphasis, since it's not the case right now... ) he will have a decent supporting cast. Jordan had Pip, but he also had Horace Grant. That's 2 Legit players, and then the steady Vets in Oakley ( Cartwright later),Paxson, Hodges. He had a slightly better cast to defer to, wouldn't you say?

No doubt. It's more about Odom taking a larger role, though, or finding a way for him to be as effective with the ball in Kobe's hands.
